Everyone who thinks this is a bad deal is greatly overrating Vilma at this point. You can't just go on past performance, you have to decide how much he can give you in the future. No team will gamble more than a 3d or 4th rounder on Vilma because of the injury and his performance the past two years. And he is a gamble right now. He's not even jogging yet, and he had surgery 4 months ago.
If Vilma has a monster year, IT COULDN'T HAPPEN TO A BETTER GUY. Especially in light that it will be a contract push year for him. With Vilma, it's not "good riddance" but rather a "fond farewell."
I wish nothing but the best for Vilma, but I wish the escalator could yield a higher pick. I think his knee may be worse than many think. Only the doctors have an informed opinion and I will bet that not all of them are in agreement. Don't be surprised to hear of setbacks or swelling. Again wishing him nothing but the best. I think we pulled the trigger this quickly because there are players targeted that the Jets want and they want as much cap clarity as possible. Trading the third and fifth picks also lets you know that money is available to strike quick on FA.
I’m critical of this front office and still think Mangini is a retard but the only thing that makes me mad about this move is the fact that it leaves me with another jersey to wax the car with. I’ve heard speculation that Vilma could not be ready to play next year…if that’s the case then a 4th seems like a good deal. Regardless – playing or not he wasn’t much good to us anymore.
Moss got traded for a 4th round, Vilma is coming off a injury so i didn't expect much. He is overrated anyways, he had a good rookie year and his rep is based on that.
