Absolutely, positively correct in my opinion. I'm dismayed that so many do not grab this concept. This is a team that has a long way to go, with many pieces to upgrade, and barely in his recovery stage from cleansing a significant number of overpaid, over the hill players, many negotiated through unreasonably long free agency contracts or extensions there to. Finally we have a GM that totally gets this. He sets the max price from a worth perspective to his team, not to the market and he sticks to his guns. In so doing he might miss out on a player we could really use, but avoids the pathetic hell of a roster mess we have been under the previous management. Short term euphoria that left us in a long term mess. Revis is the classic example of catering to one player at the overall detriment of a team needing far more that a shut down corner to to be competitive in the longer term. Idzik legacy will be established by how good he does on the draft and manages the overall financial health of the team for the long run..not how well he captures short lived free agency talent by outbidding the competition ( mostly at the top of their game with a very short horizon) on a two year wonder contract.
Booing Geno Smith for a bad throw vs Miami because of uninspired QB play dating back to 07 is though.
The direction of the team doesn't help. The 2013 team wasn't as good as the 2012(I know the record was better) team which wasn't as good as the 2011, 2010 or 2009 team...what you hear is frustration. There is a chance, a good chance, this year won't be as good as last year either....but give Idzik a chance, he has a 20 year plan.
you can go back even further, it's really since about 1993 w/ Marvin Jones, Aaron Glenn, Kyle Brady(solid player), Hugh Douglas, Keyshawn, Farrior(though we blew it w/ the 1st pick).
Mo is extremely valuable to this team. Far more valuable than any free agent we've considered this offseason and Idzik is very aware of that. He isn't going to low ball Mo.
You are talking about an entirely different subject. Orton came up here as I said in connection with Decker. Orton did not play with Decker in Orton's rookie season. Orton's rookie season is irrelevant to that discussion. Now in regard to Smith's future, we are merely talking about opinions here, including in my case. I don't hate Smith. I just don't think he's going to make it.
It is not that simple. A 2 year/$9M deal to CJ is not high risk. We were an 8-8 team last year. If Idzik fails to improve the team by leaving money unspent, that did not have to be tied up long term, just because he never "overspent" is a flawed construct. This is not baseball for which a team can rebuild with an eye towards 2016. If he passes on Revis or Cro (1 year),CJ3 (2 years), etc than he damn better well have 2014 alternatives that are better or he has FAILED. So we will see. By definition, most free agent signings are "overpays" as you've outbid 31 other teams.
You were comparing a rookie vs a veteran who broke in the league back in 2005 when you said you'd take Orton over Smith. Who has the advantage experience wise?
Putting aside the more marginal characters, I see at least three busts on that list without question. You probably are not counting Sanchez if I had to guess.
