You really can't compare Shonn and Green-Ellis. Shonn is the superior back. It's not close. Ellis has never really been more than a few carries a game guy, and those carries aren't really that great. -X-
Arguably they're the same back, but BJGE has better hands. Having them split carries 50/50 would be a great 'rotation' system for the Jets. Also, BJGE is MUCH better at pass protection than Greene.
BJGE may not be the most gifted athlete at the RB position, but he runs with fury and plays as hard as anyone. This guy loves contact and refuses to go down. I like his game. Sign me up for this. For what it's worth, I am not a huge fan of Greene. He is arguably the slowest starting RB in football. Poor hands. No ability to get to the edge. Goes down far too easily for a back of his size. And I cannot stand watching him slowly peel himself off the turf after every. single. run.
He's a good hard runner who seldom if ever loses yardage. He never fumbles and is a good blocker in passing situations. He is not as good as Greene at his best, but way more consistantly good. Kind of similar players in many ways, so not sure about the fit, unless they believe McKnight is ready to be the explosive back for this team. For personal reasons, I hope he doesn't end up with the Jets.
He's actually the kind of back who gets better the more carries he gets. He doesn't produce much when he only gets 5-10 carries in a game. He needs to get in a groove, so to speak. Games with 15+ carries: Ind 11/2/2008 - 15/57 (3.8) Buf 11/9/2008 - 26/105 (4.0) Buf 9/26/2010 - 16/98 (6.1) Mia 10/4/2010 - 16/76 (4.8) Min 10/31/2010 - 17/112 (6.6) Pitt 11/14/2010 - 18/87 (4.8) Ind 11/21/2010 - 21/96 (4.6) Nyj 12/6/2010 - 18/72 (4.0) Chi 12/12/2010 - 21/87 (4.1) Buf 12/26/2010 - 19/104 (5.5) Mia 1/2/2011 - 20/80 (4.0) Sd 9/18/2011 - 17/70 (4.1) Oak 10/2/2011 - 16/75 (4.7) Nyj 10/9/2011 - 27/136 (5.0) Kc 11/21/2011 - 20/81 (4.1) In games where he has less than 15 carries he has averaged: 2011 - 3.0ypc (He had turf toe and was used in mostly goal line/short yardage at the end of season) 2010 - 3.1ypc 2009 - 4.4ypc 2008 - 3.4ypc
Thats arguable. Shonn may be better, but not by more than a slim margin. Greene is a great #2 back, but is nothing special as a #1. He cant stay healthy and cant stay on the field on 3rd down because he cant pass protect and his hands a bricks. IMO, on a ground and pound team, he is not our answer. BJGE can stay in on 3rd down because he can do what Greene cant. He is also more durable and obviously doesnt fumble the ball. He’s not flashy, but gets the job done. Niether are ideal by themselves, but a combination of the two could be effective. I still think we need a true #1 back, and neither are that.
BJGE maybe the better all around back..but as a first and second down primary ball carrier he is inferior. The jets should not bring in another running back unless they are an upgrade on all 3 downs.
I think BJGE would make a nice compliment to Greene. I wouldn't mind seeing him come over for the right price.
I agree. I wouldnt mind someone cheap that would provide pass catching ability and that can pass protect, but if we are going to give a sizable contract, they should be a significant upgrade all around. Im pushing for a possible trade for Jonathan Stewart because this would do just that, but its obviously not likely.
I think that would be a fantastic trade and doable. I do recall their being rumblings of the Jets liking Stewart during his draft year. He would be an upgrade over Greene, fits the scheme & has some tread left on the tires from splitting carries with Deangelo Williams.
Anthony Lynn seems to be high on him. He saw some action late in the year. Thought he had good pad level & wiggle but was way too slow to the hole. That could be a confidence thing the will improve with coaching. The jury is still out.
Exactly, IMO, it would be one of the best moves we could make this offseason. It also seems like a Tanny move. If we could get him for a 3rd, our running game would immediately top 5 once again. If I were Tony Sparano, I would be begging Tanny for make this happen...Sparano loves a two headed monster. Him and Trent Richardson run so similarly and I feel both would make a similar impact on the offense and team as a whole. Problem is, I dont see TR making it to 16.
As much as I liek Stewart, I would rather draft our own back in Doug Martin at this time. Get a wr/olb/o lineman in the 1st and go with the Ray Rice clone in Martin instead of trading for Stewart.
I would love to draft Doug Martin too, one of my favorite prospects, but Im not sure he makes it to 47. I feel like he is rising on everyone’s boards and they are realizing that he is clearly the #2 back in the draft. Emmitt Smith even said that he might be better than Trent... If we got Doug Martin at 47, I would be a happy man. I would expect us to give a 3rd or less for Stewart and thats more than we would have to spend on Martin and I think Stewart would have more of an immediate impact because Stewart is groomed (in terms of pass protection) and Rex isnt known for putting that much trust in a rookie RB. Either way, I would be absolutely ecstatic if either one ended up here.
How Greene was 3rd string and only saw the field because Leon Washington broke his ankle and Thomas Jones couldnt handle 100% of the carries? Yeah, I guess I forgot about that... Thank you for picking that one line of my post and answering with such intelligence.
