If Sparano had Sanchez on a rigid clock or buzzer system, it kinda defeats the purporse of reading the field. So much will happen on any given play that a rigid timing will not be a valid option for defining who is open. Football is so fluid that you have to recognize where the windows are based on the situation not based on some timing aspect. At its core it is the same as adapting to changing situations on the ground and making the best decision. Military maxim- A rigid plan always falls apart on first contact with the enemy.
It's not really a good article - it's just a positive article. Of course his buddy is going to say he's a good coach. There were feel good articles like this when Sparano was hired too. When I read the part about having a checkdown on every play, and Cory Schlesinger having all those catches, I cringed a little. This is what were going to see this fall. Michael Vick had a higher completion percentage with MM? Maybe it's because of all the checkdowns.. Another thing I'm not encouraged about is that the Jets are a terrible fit for this offense, as the roster is currently constructed. They only have one RB on the roster that can catch the ball - McKnight, the 3rd RB. Greene can't catch a cold, Powell is lacking in that part of the game and they havent had a FB on the roster that could catch since Richie Anderson. Sanchez struggles with the dumpoffs and making reads and the offense isn't built to pass first/run second... It's going to take a major overhaul to build an offense that is successful with this scheme. I know a lot of you are positive about MM, but to me it really feels like Rex just hiring a buddy for the sake of it. Had the Jets started over with a new coach, brought in MM and made this a move for the long-term - I'd be more encouraged. Instead we are going to see an offense that will struggle again this year, while trying to adjust to a system they aren't built for. Rex will be fired along with the whole staff. And it's starting over ALL over again...
Military men are trained to be able to react with situations with disciplined and precise action. This does not mean the plan is rigid and unchanging, but their ability to fill the individual job within the plan should be done in a quick and exacting manner. The WCO is more rigid, not less. It's based on precise timing routes that require great footwork and accuracy from the QB. This does not mean the plan is too rigid or unchanging, but the QB's job within it is well defined. Sanchez's inability to read the defense both pre and post snap is the bigger problem than Tony having him on a clock. Holding the ball too long lead to a lot of his turn over problems in the last couple years.
I understand your points, especially the last paragraph, but who could realistically be looked at as an OC for this team AFTER Woody made it clear Ryan was coming back is a different question than if Ryan was not. I want to be clear that my thinking on Marty is that IF Ryan was a given, Marty is probably the best the Jets could do. Otherwise I might have preferred Norval. As for the roster and a mismatch, I agree, but it doesn't concern me since this roster is a mismatch for any productive offensive scheme, especially at Qb. I think it is a given that the O will have to be rebuilt at several key positions. Starting with the Qb. The part about that article that was implicitly left unspoken is that in going through the reads in Marty's O, the Qb can't be over and over again losing track of where the safeties are, as Sanchez does. In short, it's clear to me that Sanchez cannot play in Marty's O, and i am hoping that Marty's hire is a positive sign that the team intends to have anyone else they can find at starting Qb other than the current #6.
It’s a good article because you get an idea on what Mornhinweg is looking to do on offense. There’s nothing wrong with having a check down option, so I guess I really don’t understand your complaint with that. Powell can catch the ball out of the backfield, but it is McKnight who could benefit most from this change, and I don’t think that’s a bad thing. You don’t have to have a FB to be able to catch the ball. You can use an H-Back; a role that may be filled by Josh Baker. I don’t believe we need to have a major overhaul to make this work. We already have two receivers (Holmes and Kerley) who run the underneath stuff well. If we bring back Braylon or if Hill develops then we would have that big receiver. Bringing back Keller will be important though. I didn’t realize Rex and Mornhinweg were friends. Either way, we will have an experienced play caller/ coordinator – something we haven’t had since Mike Heimerdinger and we should all be optimistic about that.
They're old and slow but Scott anyways is still very solid against the run. but even if they did totally suck, and they did mostly suck, it's still more positions that need to be filled with starters.
To be fair the receivers were so far above the competition in the division that they often had 3-4 yard or more seperation. It was one of the concerns in most scouting reports on Sanchez.
There's nothing wrong with having a checkdown option - sure. I just know from reading the article and looking at our Jets, that in 2013, they will use that checkdown option WAY too much. Whether its Sanchez(no confidence), McElroy (no arm), or a newcomer (no familiarity), they will be looking for that checkdown all too often. Were going to see an offense that passes the ball too much for too little yardage. I hope I'm wrong, but I fear this is what were looking at.. I don't share your optimism for the Jets recieving targets, either. The offense is weak and the Jets didn't need a coordinator with a set system, forcing these guys to work within it. They would've been better served with a coordinator that is more flexible depending on the players he has and more willing to adapt. I would've preferred they took a chance on an up-and-coming young guy that made up for what he lacked in experience with being flexible/innovative. The stanford coordinator, or maybe plucking a bright QB coach from someone, etc. MM has been running his system for decades right now and I doubt he's going to adapt very well to the Jets personnel -he'll try to make his system work ON them. He'll probably have the offense playing better than last year (he'd HAVE too right?) but it's a pretty ho hum selection. It signals to me more that Rex is just trying to make the safe choice to keep his job - rather than reach for something bigger on offense which is what his rhetoric sounded like in the end of the season PC. Dinger is a good comparison to MM though. Another seasoned coordinator that was only here for one season and tried to force his offense on personnel that didn't fit. I think we will see a similar thing with MM.
Fair enough, I too was worried about what options they could've gotten at OC with Rex still at the helm. It's not the most attractive job - coaching an offense with a clear lack of talent, a severely flawed QB, being the 3rd coordinator in 3 years and possibly only being a one year situation with working under a HC on the hot seat. Which is why I'm disappointed in the MM selection. It's clear he just wanted a job and took it. I wish they would've reached for someone who wanted to BUILD something, not someone who saw an opportunity to take his show on the road.
It’s still okay to use the check downs. If defenders start defending the check down then there will be passing lanes open up for the quick slants or the crossing routes. Going to the check down will be important for getting us into good down and distance if the first and second options aren’t there. “you can’t go broke collecting change”. I’m not saying our receivers are great, but I think they can fit into this system. I don’t think we will to completely overhaul the receiving core in order to fit them into the WCO. It will be interesting to see how the offense adapts to the WCO. I think it could work. But, I don’t think Dinger is a good comparison. We never realized what the O could do in his system because we lost both Penny and Fiedler early in the season.
Sanchez, has a talent level close to Obrien. He's just greener. I've got 40 years of this shit, to judge him by. And unlike you, I understand context and construct. You look at an issue, and the first stop on the line, is the problem. That is not always the case. As I've said, IN INDIVIDUAL PHYSICAL MOMENTS, As well as in certain games Nacho has come up big. Consistency, ( especially if you consider ths particular context, Schotty Sparano) appears to be a coaching issue. If MM cannot fix it...I'll be the first one to say its broken. Right now... I don't think it is. I think the problem is fixed. If I'm wrong...I'll be first in to admit it. When he's at 60 plus completions 90 pct rating... I wonder where you'll be.
Holding the ball is a product of routes. Not the QBs. Fcol, watch any game Simms covers, and he comments on it. Simms words, not mine..." Sanchez doesn't get any gimmes" now..maybe my understanding of the language is askew, but to me that says Phil Simms who clearly watches more game film than I do, thinks they aren't utilizing high percentage routes enough.
You are 100 percent correct. And of all those numbers the 50 turnovers is the worst. However, and he's very guilty of being. Careless with the ball since he admits it to the media. However...13/17 is just as much a function of team play. I don't recall Sanchez being on the field when TEBOW marched 80 yards to win the game in Denver. All of your other stats are OC related. That's my point. You go back, and watch.....and even in St Louis, they only let him put it up 20 times....most were in Bad situations. How long was Gannon a bum..or Phil Simms for that matter. And there has not been a Greener prospect in years, than Sanchez, and of you have an OUNCE of honesty, you'll concede that he's had shit for OCs since he was drafted. The oly reasonable assertion is that the Jury is still out till this season.
People on this board act like Sanchez screwed their sister or something. Stop making this a personal thing. The best thing that can happen to the Jets is for Sanchez to play well. The kid was raw coming out of college and everybody new it so the the naysayers that talk about he sucked in 2009 and 2010 also. Well in '09 he was a rookie and 2010 he led the team to an 11-5 record and big wins in the playoffs. Year three he deserves the criticism but was getting better until the horrible ending. Year 4 really no excuse Sanchez just played bad most of the time and pushed way to hard. Sanchez has a bigger problem than footwork and accuracy and that is confidence. When you lose confidence everything else goes to shit. If you are indecisive your footwork and accuracy looks worse than it actually is reading the defense look really bad if you are unsure of the offense. Mark is at his best when gets into a rhythm. The west coast offense is designed to get a QB into Rhythm Mark has a chance to rebound (that would be best for the Jets) . He needs to do it quickly but I will leave that up to MM he has a history of making QBs better. As far as dumb offs have you watched the Patriots lately? The packers and AR dink and dunk all the time. The jets never gave Sanchez easy throws mostly because Green has Stone hands and Mcknight was always hurt. Sanchez has a chance to rebound although not a big one.
Good post. Sanchez has regressed terribly and blows, but it really is the Jets best shot if he can somehow pull it together - and like you said MM has a history of doing that. Imagine if MM suddenly turned this into a top 10 offense with Sanchez and limited talent around him? Unlikely, but it sure would be great. I hope that Sanchez pulling it all together is plan B or C though. I'm not very confident in that happening, and neither should the Jets.
I remember him saying that during the game. I also remember thinking that the short throws he does get, he misses on often. His completetion % behind the line of scrimmage was horrible. He often misses by throwing behind guys of crossing routes. These things may be fixable, but after four years of little progress on the throws he should make I'm not hopeful.
good article. the more i read on this guy the more i think he can really improve this offense. sanchez or no sanchez
People are sick of the fumbles, the interceptions, and the overthrown passes. I agree with you 100% and I still hope Mark pans out, but after all he's been through, I just don't see that happening. Too many issues to fix in a year IMO. I do agree that Sanchez is prob one of the most scrutinized QBs, I have ever seen in the history of the NFL. I don't even think J-Roc got this much hate.
