was an army brat...so i moved around dad was a cowboys fan grandfather was a skins fan uncles were dolphins fans first nfl game was a chiefs giants game mainly stationed at ft. bragg, nc... so why am i a jets fan? when i was young (i am 21)...i guess it was bc they were green i started watching consistently in about 95' when they were the worst team ever...always liked the underdog and the jets are about as low as you can go got more involved bc i liked keyshawn and then parcells...and then just kept becoming more and more dedicated ......never even been to NY (well recently switched a flight there, but that doesnt count) my favorite player is pennington and the two games i've been too are atlanta on monday night 2 seasons ago and jax last season....both complete asskickings again...why am i a jets fan? i am that guy who chose the misery...i guess i like it deep down or something
Started watching in the early 80s. my dad is a jet fan who went to games at shea. Some of the players used to go to his restaurant/bar back in the day.
I became a Titans fan in 1960 (I was 6 years old at the time). The Giants were a power at that time and I had an affinity for underdogs. I've never looked back. At least I was able to attend the 1968 AFL Championship Game. That and the Super Bowl have had to sustain for 39 years. The great thing about Jets fans is that we manage, at the same time, to be cynical about every move they make, while still expecting that the Super Bowl is just around the corner.
LOL you describe a Ranger fan as well. I have no earthly idea how I became a Jets fan. There was not one thing I can remeber to push me in that direction. No epiphany sort of speak. My dad was a hockey guy and never really cared about football. I guess why I became a Jets fan were my favorite players were Klecko and freeman McNeil. I loved how Klecko was just a class act as was feeman. That and I met JK at a NYR game and he was really cool. That and all the neighborhood kids were either Cowboy or Giant fans. I hated each and every one of those punks.
Greetings This seems like as good a thread as any to make my introduction, so... One of my earliest memories is sitting on the living room couch with my father and my uncle, watching the Jets. That memory includes learning new (and forbidden) words, courtesy of Richard Todd. That was the beginning. I was only two or three years old and didn't understand what I was getting into... but as painful as it has been at times, I wouldn't want to root for any or ther team. So, basically, I've been a Jets fan for my entire life, before I was even really aware of what I was rooting for. Nice place you got here. I'm looking forward to the upcoming season.
When I was a kid of about 6 or 7 years old I hung out with all older kids and they had all adopted the team as a favorite when the Sack Exchange got popular, and it stuck for me as I watched in disbelief when they all systematically migrated over to be Giants fans in the Parcells years. Fucking shitheads.
It was 96' ironically... My brother and I have the same teams in all the major sports except for football I didn't want to have the same team as him(Giants)...So I went with the Jets to have my own team and went through 1-15 as a kid, great. The drafting of one of my favorite Jets, Keyshawn Johnson, really got me jumpstarted in following the Jets so much closer... It's been fun...And heartbreaking.
Thanks! Actually, I forgot to add that I'm not originally from Southie. I grew up near Poughkeepsie, NY. But yeah, it sucks being a Jets fan around here. Fortunately, my cousin (also a Jets fan) is around here, so I get to enjoy (or despise) the seasons with another fan.
Dad's been a season ticket holder since the mid '70s, so I was born into it. I have hazy recollections of going to games and being an Al Toon fan in the 80s, and there are photos of me in Jets gear since basically birth, but my earliest clear recollection of being a fan was the Raul Allegre game against the Phins in 1991 to make the playoffs, and the subsequent playoff loss in Houston. I was 10.
I got into football at 7 in 1974. My dad was a Jet fan and we had Joe Namath, John Riggins became my favorite player and I've been on board ever since. My first live game was 1976 at Shea vs Tampa Bay, Namath's last win as a Jet, I think.
I grew up a Giants fan in the 80's but at least supported the Jets. I started to root for them when Parcells went and really got into them when Chad emerged. Since that season, the Jets have been my team. Also, they are the only team I have changed my allegiance on since I was born.
I can remember I was a Jet fan before this because my dad had season tickets but the 1st game I went to was a game against Buffalo back in like 84. I believe Buffalo still had white helmets but we won like 42-10 and I was hooked. The 2nd game I ever went to was the 51-46 OT thriller against Miami when Wesley Walker went nuts. I was only about 6 or 7 @ the time but I remember how exciting they were. Guys like Walker, Toon, McNeil Shuler, Lance Mehl. Toon was my favorite because everytime he caught a pass the crowd would go Toooooooooon. I also liked guys like Nuu Faaola and Rich Miano just because I also rooted for Hawaii and thy were the only 2 Hawaii guys. Every year I wanted to get the yearbook so I could see if we added a Hawaii guy. Sadly I had to wait until this year when we added Peters. I was too little to remember the blatent cheating by Shula but my 1st heartbreak came in 86 when we had Cleveland beat and we managed to lose the game. I can remember watching it with my dad and uncle.
I'm guessing that was the 1985 home opener. Freeman McNeil broke a big run and Al Toon played his first home game, thus the beginning of the Toooon call. I was there, nyjunc can probably shed more light on the game, just a guess.
I became a Jets fan the day Namath opted for NY over the St Louis Cardinals. The NFL got it totally wrong, he lasted until 12th.
I grew up in Jersey... my dad took me to a few giants and Jets games when I was little. I'm not really sure why I picked the Jets, my dad didn't really have a team he was passionate about. I think I just found the giants really really boring... plus the Jets have cooler colors. Anyway, when I started really getting into football, even though I lived in Dallas, the Jets just felt like "my team".
I was too young to remember, but I'm told that my dad had his buddies over to watch that game and their negative reaction to the loss caused me to cry. Would not be the last time the Jets would make me cry.
During the 1-15 season I was rooting for Murrell to get 1,000 yards and like rooting for underdogs, but I think the reason is that I am addicted to torture
I always been a jet fan ever since I can remember. But when I really started watching jet football was during the kotite era... The first full season I watched was when we went 1-15 an even during that one wiin(i think it was against arizona or somthing) we got during that season i was the happiest kid ever. If I can love the jets thru a season like that than imagine if they won a superbowl....
