That is what the guaranteed money is for. The best contracts for NFL players are the ones w/ the most guaranteed money. He didn't get bit by the Jets, he knew it wasn't likely to be picked up and he got his guaranteed money from us.

A longer contract? He is 32. He will probably get a one year deal, or a multi year deal with voidable years in it.

The NFL is a business, and the teams that pay out for players on the decline aren't planning well for the future. Hemi is right, TJ got a nice big payout at the beginning of his contract.

People don't look at it the other way.

Just look at Gholston's contract. Alot of money doled out, guaranteed, for nothing.

Yeah, don't get me started on the subject of rookie contracts in this thread. I was happy that they opted out of the CBA for that reason alone.

That's quite possible. I guess he felt it was worth the risk to test the market with the downside that he could come crawling back to the Jets for less money and a smaller role. Possibly.

On a similar note, I never would have thought in a million years that Coles would have gotten a bigger salary for leaving the Jets, but he gambled and won. Of course, he later lost to the Jets......twice ;-)

Why look to the draft or FA. Why not to out own roster.

Chauncey Washington---6”1” 220 pounds---4:35 40. Shonne Greene clone, except he is much faster, and can catch the ball.

Here’s a video of the kid. Looks a lot better then any one that’s going to be in the dump

I don't know what that code bullshit is, but you need to edit the shit out of your post. *thanks.

Also, I don't know where you're getting your info, but Chauncey Washington isn't that fast. He wouldn't be a practice squad/journeyman player if he was as good as you think.

  9. I affirm your sentiment, EcKo151. Best of luck wherever you wind up, Jonesy. If it's not too much of a bother, TJ, send us the occasional image or 25 of the fair Meagan.

Jets confirm Jones pink slip »

    By Rich Cimini

This is the way it goes now in the NFL. You rush for 3,800 yards in three seasons, score 31 TDs, never miss a game, capture an AFC rushing title, make a Pro Bowl, get voted "most inspirational teammate" twice by your peers ... and get a pink slip with a two-paragraph statement from your bosses, thanking you for all your efforts.

The Jets released this statement this afternoon, confirmed the release of RB Thomas Jones. It includes quotes from GM Mike Tannenbaum and coach Rex Ryan. They provide no insight into what went into the decision.

Tannenbaum: “We have informed Thomas Jones and his representatives that we will release him on March 5. Thomas joined us three years ago and has been a productive, passionate leader both on and off the field who has served as a positive influence for our younger players. We were fortunate to acquire Thomas and wish him the best.”

Ryan: “When I got here Thomas immediately became one of my guys. He had one of his best years last season - might have been his best. I have a tremendous amount of respect for him as a player and a person. As I said the other day, this is one of the tough decisions we had to make for our organization.”

The team had no statement from Jones.

Yeah, it is fast, but Washington doesn't play fast. There's plenty of reasons why this guy has been on multiple teams in only a few seasons.

When a player runs a 4.35 at his pro day, and then falls to the 7th round, something's up. Washington was constantly injured at USC, and he never lived up to the player he was supposed to be.

Here's an old scouting report on him.

Runs with tremendous power with a striking blend of speed. Shows great vision in following the holes. Is too powerful to be tackled with arm tackles, and usually must be gang tackled. Was very persistent in his career, with 2 seasons lost to being academically ineligible, and 2 starting seasons nearly lost to nagging injuries. Had his best game on a rainy day in Berkeley against the Cal Bears. Basically willed the Trojans to victory after a 29 carry 220 yard effort. Tested very well at USC's pro day, running an astounding 4.35 40 time and 18 bench press reps.

    Career Notes
In 31 games at Southern California, Washington started 15 contests. He collected 1,778 yards with 19 touchdowns on 371 carries (4.8 avg). He also caught 17 passes for 158 yards (9.3 avg) and a pair of scores, adding four tackles (2 solos).

The reason he is on the PS seems to be the two other teams who’s roster he has been on are very deep in RB. Dallas and Jacksonville.

The reason he was a 7th round pick is two fold. As you stated he has been injured. Not serious injuries like knees, but nagging injuries mostly due to the violence he runs with. Very similar to the injuries Shonne Greene keeps getting. Result of running over people.

He was also declared ineligible academically for two years. Again like Shonne Greene.

In an interview from the combine last week, Mike Tannenbaum while praising the great job Joey Clinkscale and Terry Bradway were doing, gave a list of unheralded good players they had uncovered. DeVito, Westerman, and Washington.

If Tannenbaum includes him on a list like that I have to assume he likes him and Washington will be given a chance to compete for a share of the carries.

If you watch the video he does bring the speed to the field

Don't you get it, man? I don't care.

Chauney Washington was a 7th round pick that can't stick with NFL teams. There's absolutely no reason to have any faith in this kid as a potential ball carrier on our team.

Comparing Washington to Shonn Greene is disrespectful to Greene. The two aren't on the same level athletically.

It's statements like this that show this really was a tough decision, then again, the way they speak of him, would 1 year more of him really be a hindrance to this team from going the extra step to the Super Bowl?

Oh yeah, see you in Foxborough! (I swear if this happens......)

The Coles contract is another great example. They signed a 31 year old WR with multiple concussions a 28mil contract over four years. He was going to get 6mil guaranteed from the Jets, the Bengals gave him almost ten million last year alone. He was to replace THoush...and it did not work. Average year at best, he was invisible alot. Now he looks to be possibly cut. So he got the long term deal, with more money, and didn't produce like a number two. Now he will lose the remainder of that deal, and I doubt he will see those numbers again.

So he won short term, but is going to struggle to find big dollars now. Of course, I guess he could blame Palmer.
