Either way, if Maccagnan is hell bent on trading Mo, seems like it would help if he could trade him early, before he needs $17M to fund the tag. Plus that would settle the issue before the draft and the rest of FA. Don't get me wrong, I'd LOVE to keep Mo, but I get the whole cap thing.
Exactly this. and this is why i said this is the offseason where we can more accuratly judge the job that mac is doing. regardless of how good he did with the moves he made last season, he was still in a position very likely to succeed. his starting point was a 4-12 team that needed help everywhere. so not much room to go anywhere but up. he had 55 million in cap room he had to spend. he had the #6 overall pick in an 8 player draft. you can do alot worse then what mac did with that, but the point is, thats a super easy spot for a GM. NOW is where things get tricky. we are in the complete opposite situation to last offseason. we were 10-6 and missed the playoffs. not quite good enough to be a playoff team, but good enough where our pick is in the later end of the first round. Cap wise things are super tight, and one of our 3 best players is a free agent who wants big money.... in a year where we have a ton of free agents, and some major questions marks like what to do at LT, quarterback, and how to bring in a pass rusher. last year Mac could have done a mediocure or even subpar job and drastically improved the team. this year mac can do a good job, and the team can get worse. like most scenarios, its going to come down to what he does in the draft 1 through 7 and which players he banks on keeping here long term. thats the bed we made when we went with big money to veterans last offseason.
kind of a useless tweet. id rather have 0 cap space and all my major guys locked up long term then have 15 million in cap room but have to deal with 20+ free agents including my QB, my best defensive player and several starters from a season ago
This isn't about being "cut." I believe that someone on here posted the NFL rules on this. I believe there is a period of time around one week, maybe 10 days. Where NFL clubs can negotiate with their own FAs first, then if they fail to sign them during that period, they become FAs and any team can negotiate with them.
It should be a position we look to upgrade but we've been saying that for the past few years and he's won the starting job each season. We have to look to upgrade the position but Pace should be brought back for the veteran min.
Ask her if she wants to try out next year because we have nothing at OLB besides Lorenzo who showed promise but not a surefire starter for the next 5-10 years.
I disagree. You have a couple of valid points, but overall, you're off the mark. In 2014, the Jets were coming off of a 8-8 season. Idzik had 12 draft picks and cap space to fill some holes and add some big contracts. Was there drastic improvement? Heck No! In 2014, they were 4-12. You are underestimating the job that Mac did last season. You're taking it for granted as if anyone could do that, and like we've had that kind of GMing for years, when we've had anything but that. Things can always get worse instead of better. He couldn't have done a mediocre job last season and the team been drastically improved. That's totally absurd, ridiculous, and patently wrong. Mac can do a good job this year, and the W-L record may be worse, but the team won't be worse. Again, that's ridiculous.
Eh, I've been a bigger supporter of Pace than most and we have effectively kept him on this team for the past few years on nearly a vet min contract, but I think now is the time to move on. He ain't getting any younger and I'd rather give someone younger a fresh look.
For the Pats, yeah it doesn't matter they have Tom Brady still. For the Bills and Dolphins that's great news because they have nowhere near Super Bowl caliber teams. I think the Dolphins are the most screwed of all because that awful Suh contract, not to mention giving a QB whose never made the playoffs top dollar.
Agreed about the younger fresher look but agree to disagree on letting him walk. I think due to being a leader on the team for the past 8 years he's earned the right to compete for a roster spot in the summer..if he gets cut in camp thats fair but methinks he wins at least a backup OLB spot but if Bowles wants to get younger and use that spot on someone who can play special teams so be it.
Yeah I suppose I am never against letting someone compete in camp, especially at a position we are currently weak in. I hope somebody steps up here though. Obviously a pass rusher would be best, but we also need help in coverage too.
Signing Cro last year may have been a bridge too far on the cap. If the Jets had made do with the other options on the roster opposite Revis they'd have had another $8M to carry forward onto this year's cap. As it is we didn't get a lot of Cro in 2015 and we're going to lose people, including him, this year.
It's going to be a grim negotiation period is my guess. Mo and the Jets won't be able to reach a deal and nobody will give the Jets 2 1sts plus the contract Mo wants and so on July 15th Mo will sign the tag and then we'll all settle in to see what the trade is likely to be and when. Why do the Jets players always want the top of the market if they're any good? It's like a curse.
Yep and people called me crazy because I'm not ready to anoint Maccagnan yet in the executive of the year thread. Last offseason was house money. He earns his paycheck if he improves the roster yet again this year and drafts well and we can see Mauldin step in as a starter and Jarvis Harrison or Deon Simon find a way to contribute.
