The good thing to take away from the Jets core players is that they are all young.

    Definite cornerstone players-

    Offense:
    Brick
    Mangold
    L. Washington
    Cotchery

    Defense:

    Rhodes
    Harris
    Revis

The jury is out on the following:

Clemens- we simply need more time to evaluate him.
    B. Thomas- It is clear he can not be the primary OLB and that a true stud is required to take the pressure off of him.
Elam- Young player prone to both the big hit and the big mistake
    E. Smith- Can he stay healthy or is he just a depth player
    B. Smith- Is he just a gadget player or can he actually learn the WR position.
Vilma- How serious is his injury. Can he come back or does he want to? (with the Jets I mean not football)

The jury isn't out on Brad Smith. He just flat-out sucks. Keep him around if he contributes on special teams - otherwise, he's worthless.

Yea...long term I don't think he's used nearly as much as he is now. When we actually get enough talent to be a more conventional NFL team...the gadget crap we run with him probably disappears.

Peppered into the horrible drops Brad Smith is prone to making, I have seen him make some pretty decent grabs. I was rewatching the Browns game last night and Clemens threw a dart to Smith on a crossing route that I assumed would be an incompletion, but the kid stabbed it out of the air with one hand. His concentration isn't there for the most part, but he might be salvageable as a slot receiver.

Good point. For the most part he's sucked as a receiver but he's shown flashes. I'll give him another year to stop sucking before I write him off - especially considering that he was a QB in college.

This is where the #1 pick goes. Or Jackson...DE - USC....& play him at OLB.

Well, maybe now that is the case, but at one time Bruce was the #1 guy in StL.
Bruce had 119 catches for 1781 yards and 13 TDs in 1995. He was putting up huge numbers with Jessie Hester starting on the other side.

That you have Elam on this list, and not Miller, is a joke... These are two young players, with nearly identical flaws (poor off the field decisions, overaggression). The difference, however, is that Miller has much better ball-instincts, and much, much better physical tools....

If Elam is at all part of our future plans, and Miller is not, it will be a travesty...

Are seriously going to argue that with Elam in there the D has not gotten better. To be sure he is not the sole reason or even a main one but improve it has since he got playing time. Incidentally, Rhodes is playing his best football with Elam in there.

A reason I would not include Miller on my list is, I have seen nothing from him on the field that shows he can be a competent CB. KR, fine he is fantastic. I know some said he was having a great camp. Fact remains he has yet to prove he is competent at being a CB.

Elams off the field behavior was 3-4 years ago. He has not done anything to my knowledge lately. If you want to debate the severity, fine, his was worse than Miller and I have nothing but contempt for guys that abuse women. This is just a list of players that can go either way but have at least shown some promise. It is not like I called him a pro bowler and there is no reason to think it is a joke he in on this list............. unless of course his prior misconduct excludes him. In that case I can not argue for him.

Edit: I also did not include Miller because he is going to come off a catastrophic injury. We have no idea how that will effect him. I totally forgot about him.

He played 3 games w/o Coles this year and as a #1. he had 5 recs for 90 yds against wash and 6 for 53 against NE in bad conditions. The only bad game he had was at Dallas but KC was brutal in that game. it's unfair to label Cotch based on 1 poor game as a #1 in 3 chances.

exactly, he played better than i hoped this year. I can?t belive some here actually want to draft Jake Long

i was very impressed with Stucky in preseason, he looked like a Coles in the making. maybe we already got our next Coles right here, already.

Wow, just glancing over this thread is making me excited about our future. We definitely have the young talented players in core positions that will serve as a great base for years to come. Let's just hope that the brass makes better decisions to bring in more quality players so we can become perennial competitors again, and not just a one-hit-wonder.
