Its Jarvis Jones or a trade back for Warmack.

With as many holes as Jets currently have, best to go BPA and as close to a 'can't miss' prospect as there is.

QB is biggest need, but doesn't match BPA.
They also need OLB pass rusher, and Oline help, which do match well with this draft class.

That said, i wouldn't at all be opposed to taking a RT or G, if the talent evaluators grade them high enough. If Warmack turns into the next Nicks or Hutch, it would be hard to argue a #9 selection.
While ILB is not the biggest need, i wouldn't pass on Teo either.

As I've said before, I'm a huge fan of Jones for the No. 9 pick. I think the fit for our team is just too good to pass up there.

If not, trade back. I would love to move back into the 20's and see who falls. We have so many holes that I honestly wouldn't mind the trade back. If we can get an OL plus be able to add a dynamic WR with the pick gained in the trade, I think it could be worth it.

    Re: OLB

Jets need a football player that can come in and perform, not a project with high bust potential. That's what Jordan and Ansah are, high bust potential projects. Guys who are "projected" to be good, who have good physical tools but have poor technique and poor production.

Jordan is tall, fast and can cover Wrs from the slot. Cool, he's like a TE playing defense. Unfortunatly we dont need a OLB to cover wide receivers, we need a pass rusher and his hands and technique are Maybin-like. He has no pass rushing moves except run really fast and try really hard. People love to fall in love with what "could be"...Well right now I know what Jordan isn't, a pass rusher.

I give him 3.9 out of 5 Gholstons

Ansah is another project. So he's 270 and ran track? Awesome. Can he sack a quarterback? Not yet? Still learning the game cause he's only played for a few years? Well he can learn on another team.
    1) Ansah is a high potential guy that would be a good 2nd round pick to groom. He makes more sense for a team like the Giants that can groom him for the future.
    2) Ansah is a 4-3 DE. Not only is 270 a little big for a OLB but it's also adding more complexity to his NFL transition, which isn't good for a guy with little football experience.
    3) You would hate him. He will not perform at all for the first year MINIMUM and will be considered a bust by the fans for a while. Coples is the team sack leader and yet people still critique the pick.

    I give this pick 4 out of 5 Gholston's

Only first round OLBs we should pick at #9 are
Jones (2/5 Gholstons, due to health)
    Werner (1/5)
    Moore (1/5)

    Cream of the crop.

If they are gone, we should try to get Brandon Jenkins.

Guy has 1st round talent but got IR'ed his senior year after a 13 and 8 sack seasons. Now he's a 2-3 round pick. Great guy to get if we trade back.

This should be the draft of the skill positions.

Ansah actually exhibits good technique and hand usage. As some scouts have said, he's inexperienced, not "raw". Dont make it seem like we need an immediate impact, because we dont. This team is not a true SB contender so its not like we need someone to get 10+ sacks rights away to put us over the edge. If someone needs a year of NFL coaching to truly tap into their potential (and we are not talking about players like Vlad Ducasse), then it shouldnt stop you from pulling the trigger on THIS team.

Also, there are more 4-3 DE's playing OLB in a 3-4 than anything else. Thats not a major transition when discussing 3-4 OLB prospects.

Im sure the Giants and 49ers are regretting drafting inexperienced players that had massive upside... Oh wait, they are reaping the benefits.

Now that he has declared, I'll take Laveon Bell with the number 9 pick.

Number 9 pick? You mean the ninth pick of the third day right?

Why not? what am I missing? he has power, speed and is very agile for a man his size, he reminds me of Marshal Lynch.

Please educate me as to why its a bad pick, serioulsy.

Well first off, look at the talent in the top 10-15 this year. Guys like Te'o, Jones, Moore, Lewan, Warmack, Milliner, Jockel, Matthews, Werner, Lotulelei, Jordan, etc. Those guys are head and shoulders above Bell skill wise. You dont pass up any of those prospects for Bell (I could also list plenty more but those are just the top guys)

Now thats not to say Bell cant be a good back in this league, I wouldnt doubt that at all, but again we'd be passing up a world of talent for a RB of all positions.

Now I've been an advocate of picking a RB in the first if hes an exceptional talent (for example my thread on Lattimore pre-injury) , but Bell simply did not show the dominance a guy like Lattimore did (or even Richardson for that matter) facing the best of the best.

Now would I select him in the 2nd? Quite possibly (depending on his workouts/combine), but #9 is out of the question.

He wasn't that great in college. He averaged 4.7 yards a carry (solid, but plenty are better) and did it against mediocre competition. He didn't run very well against the better teams that he did play (Notre Dame, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio State) Is an OK reciever as he can catch but again isn't that explosive. 4 games he didn't even have a run of 10 yards or more. He's a solid prospect in the late third to early fifth round, but he was hardly dominant against not so great competition. You look at guys like Eddie Lacy (6.4 ypc in SEC), Giovanni Bernard (6.7 ypc and a nice 500 receiving yards), and Montee Ball (61 tds in two years) and it's tough to see why you should take Bell ahead of any of them.

Runningbacks that go in the first round at this point are very good running prospects. Any that go in the top-15 are absolutely elite, everyone in the country knows his name kind of backs.

Furthermore, even in round four or five, i'm not sure Bell makes sense for the Jets. He lacks explosiveness and exceptional recieving skills. He runs about a 4.6 40, which is underwhelming (same as Shonn Greene). If we draft a runningback, the Jets should be looking for somebody with explosion, with legit breakaway speed, and can catch the football(a lot). Bell doesn't fit that. He definately is a big strong back and is a legitimate NFL prospect, but he's a day three guy. I don't see the Marshawn Lynch Comparison.

Fair enough, but to say he did not show dominance like lattimore, I'm going to disagree, I have seen Gamecocks and MSU play this year and I believe Bell is equal to Lattimore.

Some of the guys listed above we don't have a NEED for, Teo does not fit our scheme, square peg round hole, to take him for the sake of taking him is not a good organizational move.IMO

Warmack would be a guy I could take at 9, ready to come in an make an impact.

Lewan, are the Jets going to move Ferguson? that would be the only reason to pick him at 9.

While I know the motto is pick the best player on the board, our offense has no weapons, so when do the Jets start addressing those needs?

We don't know if Holmes or Keller will be injured again next year, to many holes on offense to fix, they need to be addressed early and often in this draft....JMO

The Tennessee trio of Bray, Hunter, and Patterson look pretty good, Bray has an absolute cannon of an arm

OK, that's not going to happen.

Let me tell what I know about Bell.

First, I live in Central Ohio, and have seen Bell play High School ball. Bell comes from Groveport H.S., same school as Eric Smith.

Bell was a good player, but he wasn't a standout in High School that everyone felt was going to be a NFL player, OSU didn't even offer him a scholarship.

I think Bell is going to be a good NFL back, but a complementary back, he won't carry the load. I follow the Big ten and Bell was good, not awesome in the sense of a 1st Rd talent. I think Bell will be a mid 2nd to early 3rd Rd pick.

And who did run well against those defenses that you mentioned? It's not hard to deal with MSU when maxwell was a bum of QB, they could just stack the box.

In regards to his speed, I agree with you, I thought he was faster but slowed down after packing on the muscle. I don't want another RB who is not fast.

    Thanks for the info.

I have a feeling I'm going to get flamed for this, but what about Tavon Austin? I think if the Jets sign a free agent like Chase Daniel or Matt Moore at QB, pick Austin up in the first round, then go OLB, RB, and OL by the end of the 3rd (obviously involving some sort of trade, be it up from the 4th or down in the 1st), then the team should be in decent shape without blowing everything up.

My idea here is that the offense needs a first round talent more than the defense does, and that the OLB position can still be adequately addressed on the second day of the draft.

Holmes, Austin, Kerley, Hill, Edwards, and Gates/Schilens would make a pretty good receiving crew for next year with the future in mind. With Bernard, Bell, or even Lattimore (obviously assuming health) paired with Powell and another solid offensive lineman, I'd feel pretty good about offensive talent going into the future. In 2014, they can take a stud QB early in the draft and develop him in a healthy environment.

Then in the later rounds, they can pick up a TE and another LB for good measure. The defensive line is in great shape and the secondary should be pretty good assuming at least Bell can come back for a higher-but-still-low price. It's not worth spending early draft picks in those position groups anyhow.

Maybe I'm wrong. I'm sure you guys will let me know.

    ^

I love Tavon Austin, he's a playmaker, one of the best entering this draft. I would love for the Jets to draft Austin. He is just not an early 1st Rd value, and our needs at OLB & OL is right in the perfect value at #9.

Lewan, Jones, Werner should/may be available at #9.

    Alec Ogletree LB Georgia

I know a lot of people compare Jarvis Jones to Von Miller, but I actually think Ogletree is more like Von Miller with the way both he and Ogletree have the athleticism and versatility to play both inside and outside at LB.

I love how Denver is able to line Von Miller up all over the place on defense. Sometimes he's inside on early running downs or in pass coverage, sometimes he's outside in pass coverage. He lines up inside and blitzes on third downs and is also obviously one of the best edge rushers at OLB in the league.

I think Ogletree can bring a similar type of dynamic to the Jets defense. I'm not saying he's going to be as explosive of a pass rusher as Von Miller since that's a massive projection, but he has similar closing speed, versatility, and playmaking ability.

I think Ogletree could be to the Jets kind of like what Adalius Thomas was for Rex in Baltimore. AD got a bad wrap at the end in NE b/c Belichick black-balled him, but he was a hell of a player on the Ravens. Line him up anywhere, can cover those fast/athletic TE's and RB's, can rush the passer from anywhere.

Jets LB's could not cover anyone and could not rush the passer well with a standard 4 man rush. Ogletree can do both as he's been an inside linebacker for the past two years and also has the long arms and speed you want to rush the passer off the edge in my opinion.

Ogletree was the best player on the Georgia defense this year IMO, not Jarvis Jones. A Jets LB corps featuring Harris, Ogletree and Demario Davis with Coples, Wilkerson, and Ellis up front would look pretty good to me going forward.

Speaking of Ogletree I actually want him but to replace Harris. I think the inside LB duo of Davis and Ogletree would be too good to pass up and would help us with our hybrid D Rex seems to be going too. Trading Harris could free up cap space as well and with the new GM having no ties to him its likely he could be on the way out
