I disagree. A top 10 pick at most positions should start immediately. IMO the exceptions would be possibly QB, OLB, WR or maybe DB who may need some seasoning. Linemen taken that high should definitely start. The Jets have needs at too many positions to take a player they have no real need or use for. Another DL taken in the first round would cause many Jets fans to riot, and rightfully so. IMO the ONLY reasonable move in this scenario is to trade down, garner additional picks and really improve the team's talent level, and hopefully also be able to address positions of need like LT, OLB, WR, RB and TE.
I understand your objections to it, but I disagree. In war, generals sometimes retreat or intentionally lose a battle so they can win the war. There's no dishonor in that, so why should there be in tanking a game or two. It's not like they intentionally tank the whole season. Lots of players and teams quit at the end of those seasons anyway, especially when the HC is going to get fired. Trying to win the Lombardi Trophy is a war. It takes a combination of skill and luck in the draft and FA, skill in building the roster and team chemistry, skill in developing young players, and I think shrewd judgement, and part of that is using the draft and system to one's best advantage. Winning two games at the end of an otherwise lost season is beyond stupid and meaningless imo. In doing so, you hurt your team and can miss out on the very players your team needs to dramatically turn things around. In that sense you're winning the battle, but losing the war. If Sam Houston had done that, he'd have never beaten Santa Anna. One of the main reasons I've seen posited for not tanking is that the wins at the end of a season can build momentum and carry over to the following season. IMO, that's mostly hogwash, particularly when you're gonna be getting a new CS. In that scenario, there will probably be a lot of roster turnover, systems will change, and there is zero carry over. If you're faced with finishing 7-9 or 8-8, then I can understand trying to win the last game to finish at .500. I can even understand it if you're faced with 8-8 or 9-7, then yeah, you go all out to finish on a winning note. When your choice is between 2-14 or 4-12, then there is no winning note. Just get the season over with and get the best draft pick you can out of it. There are no such things as "moral" victories imo. At least being in the #2 spot in the draft, you're in the catbird seat in every round. You can take the best prospects or you can trade down and perhaps garner a butt load of picks to help rebuild your team. Aside from last year when the Jets could have taken Teddy Bridgewater, how long has it been since they were in a position to draft a real honest-to-God franchise QB prospect? If Bowles and Mac are any good at their jobs at all, they're not likely to be in a position to draft one any time in the near future, either. We all know the only realistic way for a team to win the Lombardi Trophy is to have a franchise QB. Is the franchise just supposed to keep stumbling along in mediocrity, torturing its fans indefinitely? If so, then I think they should just fold the franchise and be done with it. Unless they're going to use every means at their disposal to try to get the QB they need so they can win, then imo they should be all fired, the franchise sold and moved, or folded.
wtf, if Williams is there you take him in 2 seconds. Best player in the draft. Makes the D-line even stronger. Gives you leverage in Wilk's contract negotiations
I would take him in one second. A D line of Wilkerson, Williams and Richardson would be pretty awesome. I like Harrison, but hey....ya gotta do wacha gotta do.
We run a 3-4 with one of our LB's already out of position meaning that we would have 4 DL 1st rounders and Snacks while running a 3-4.... Makes no sense whatsoever.
Assuming both QB's are taken, Williams is just too good a player to pass up. You make adjustments. Coples, Snacks are either traded, or they become situation players rotating in. Giants had 4 pass rushers on the D line at times in the past. They managed okay.
Sorry, I disagree. The Jets have already ignored the offense for too long and used too many of their first round picks on the DL. Enough is enough. Unless they're trading Mo or Snacks, they'd better not even think about taking Williams.
Exactly! No matter who the GM, with the exception of Gholston, they have continually ignored the most important position on a 3-4 D alignment, the pass-rushing OLB. Then there's the offense... Mac and Bowles seem smarter than Tanny, Idzik and Rex. If not, eff this team, I'm done with it.
Make adjustments? Snacks gets traded and who plays NT? That's not a position you could slide just anyone to. Coples is an OLB so you trade him and you still have 1 too many lineman for a 3-4. Even if we switched to a 4-3 moving Coples back to the DL we would have 1 too many lineman in the room if we take Williams. This was okay when we took Sheldon it would not be okay now. Worse case scenario is if Williams is still on the board at our pick while both QB's and WR's are gone and we can't trade out of it.
I agree the offense has been ignored, and for way too long too. But the situation the Jets are in leaves very little choice IMO. I think we can agree that QB is not going to happen, although both of us would like it to. That leaves Geno or possibily Fitzpatrick as QB, neither of whom are going to strike fear in anyone. While drafting Cooper or White would be the sexy thing to do, we still need someone to get the ball to them and we are sadly lacking in that area. So that leaves Gurley as the only option that can conceivably make a big difference on offense. As much as he has been touted, he is still coming off an injury year and I think he was injured the year before as well. That makes Gurley a very risky pick for #6 overall. So now we come to the other side of the ball where most think the Jets will take a pass rusher. That's defense again and we all know that success rushing the passer in college doesn't necessarily translate to the pros, so that's a risky pick too. Therefore, when the guy everyone says is the best player in the draft falls to you at #6, I think you have to pull the trigger on that.
I haven't given up hope on Mariota yet. While it may not be very bloody likely, it is still possible. I understand your perspective, but in this case, disagree. IMO just because Geno and Fitz aren't that good doesn't mean you don't take a WR. If anything, they need MORE help to make them even decent. If Mariota is gone and Cooper or White is there, that almost has to be the pick imo. The only exception would be Fowler and then I'd have a tough choice, but would take Fowler, and try to get Dorsett or Strong in round 2 because there is a bigger drop off in the OLBs than the WRs. Sure there is risk in taking OLBs, but there is risk at every position. That doesn't mean you avoid making the pick. The Jets need speed and youth at OLB. They can take a year or two to develop, but that's ok. Fowler could surprise and be ready to play day 1, but if not, he could be a situational pass rusher until he's ready and contribute plenty. #6 is too high for Gurley, but if they traded down, then Gurley could come into play. If Leonard falls to #6, there would probably be several teams who were willing to trade up to get him. The Jets could use more picks. They could trade down, get their LT of the future, a WR, OLB or RB in the first, and with the additional picks strengthen the team greatly. Those players would make a bigger impact on the team's play than Williams alone imo.
