I'm not panicking or sad. I'm happy hunter's back. I'm not going to sit back and think that the RT spot is taken care of.
What are the other options tho? If we have a choice between Braylon Edwards or an upgrade at RT I think we go Edwards and it's really a no brainer decision.
If it is Hunter he was adequate when he knew specifically he was the RT and there was no one else, the games he started, he was ok. He wasn't good in games where he had to sub in. We shall see with Vlad, supposedly he is ready to shock the world.
I agree. May the best man start. I'm pulling for Vlad because of where we drafted him, as well as his overall potential. He could become a franchise RT but I'm all for having Hunter start @ RT, especially if he out plays Ducasse during the offseason.
this.i don't forsee any other o.l. moves being made.(aside from camp meat) it's hunter v ducasse for the r.t. spot.hopefully it's a close battle,this way depth isn't a concern
This is one of the most cost-effective moves we could have made. Re-signing Hunter gives us a) Vlad insurance b) an experienced back-up tackle and c) our jumbo package tight end. I don't like the idea of Vlad Ducasse or Wayne Hunter protecting Mark Sanchez, but the only way we were going to get Woody or somebody of Woody's caliber is by paying more than we can afford. ADDED: To put the cost of an effective right tackle into perspective, the Chargers just re-signed Jeromey effin Clary for $5 million per year.
@janesports Jane McManus My educated guess on Damien Woody is that, though he has retired, Jets fans haven't seen the last of him. Wonder what she means by that.
She means "I'm a chick and 'my educated guess' is an oxymoron." Nah, in all seriousness... we lose a tackle, you can bet your ass Woody gets a phone call. We can't afford to invest as much in the o-line as he'd cost after the Hunter signing, though. I'm not even convinced we can bring back Turner, now. Get your gameface on, Zane Taylor.
Taylor is a OG/C...but, Callahan seemed to be enamored with him and I trust him. Still, Hunter is a solid signing as we need OL depth and he's been here for years already. Hopefully Ducasse is ready to push for that job and become a freight train on that right side for LT, McKnight and Greene to follow.
He'll either push Ducasse to start or hold down the fort until Ducasse is ready. Smart move to keep Hunter around.
My guess is that if Vlad looks bad in camp, Big Wood will be here in a week or 2. Hunter is a great back-up, but not really a starter. So, this says that Callahan and Rex think highly of Vlad, or have something else brewing.
...or that Damien Woody is done with football and the best replacement on the open market was a guy who already has experience in the offense.
Yeah, I'm surprised at the Woody news but I'm not shocked. Hunter is a fine replacement, he probably came at a reasonable price, and he can either start or back up, and you have no problem either way. Whether Ducasse is ready this year, next year, or never, it's still a sound investment, pending the terms of the deal.
Smart move by the Jets. Knows the system already, has become a steady player, and I'm sure didn't cost too much. I have no doubts he will be the starting RT come opening day. Vlad hopefully will be the near future. My only concern, god forbid D'brick goes down... but there is only so much you can do for depth.
