Sure, we sucked at developing QBs, but he just got lucky he stumbled into Brady in the 6th round. Aside from that he didn't get results from any other QBs has had including going 5-11 with #1 overall pick Bledsoe and not developing 1st rounder in Jones plus wasting QBs he had in Cleveland too. Basically his legacy comes down to amazing luck of getting the best player ever in the 6th round. He was a good defensive coach, that's it. Now he acts like he is know it all when it comes to the QBs.
If Fields is as bad as many advertise, then we’ll be in prime position to get one of the top QB prospects in 2026. If he realizes his potential, then we have dynamic duel threat QB just entering his prime. Seems like a win win to me. Not sure why the placeholder can’t also be a guy that could potentially be the long term solution if everything breaks right. What am I missing?
This is the way I see it. You want to try to find the next journeyman type QB with upside who realizes his potential (i.e. Geno in Seattle, Darnold in Minnesota, etc) and he fits the bill. His connection with GW is a plus too. My only concern is will somebody give him way too much money or a longer term commitment, which I would not be willing to do. I bet some team out there will
I think we are a pretty attractive option to Fields, who already said wants to be the guy this year and start whole year. He did say as much already: https://x.com/BoyGreen25/status/1892308235811770535 "Fowler was told that Fields has looked at the NYJ roster & ‘sees some intrigue’ + mentioned Garrett Wilson." The Jets have 4 starters on the OL plus a #1 WR, who was his College teammate, and they have great relaionship: https://247sports.com/article/ohio-...alks-justin-fields-baker-mayfield--183831159/ . Jets also have #7 pick in the draft. That means it is very unlikely they will get a top 2 QB, who will threaten Fields in 2025 as the rest of the QB class is weak. Titans and Giants are are picking top 3 and are much more likely to get a Ward/Sanders at QB, and then Fields has to look over his shoulder again after what he just experienced in Pitts. Pitts is an option too, but they did bench him, so not sure about his feelings there. Other option is the Raiders, but I am not sure if their situation is better than ours. So, while I definitely can see the Raiders or someone else signing him, I do think we are the favorites to get him if we want him. That would definitely by my much preferred option. As @legler82 said before, and I mentioned earlier as well, it is a win/win situation. We get a decent guy who is young. If he succeeds and explodes, however small that chance is, at least there is a chance that all of the sudden we have a FQB already. If not, he is still not awful overall, but we won't be great and will have a decent pick in 2026 draft where there are some good QBs. Win win.
Which I don't hate honestly. Sounds like he's well-liked, has a good rapport with GW. But at age 36 and a lengthy injury history we can't count on him. I'd want one more legitimate option also added, ideally a rookie or younger QB with upside
For me Tyrod is a perfect back-up. He is simply not durable enough to make starter. But he can come in for a few games and be a high end back-up. Last year it made sense to have a guy like that given that Rodgers was coming off serious injury. This year I am just not sure. If we sign a durable guy like Fields, maybe Travis can be the back-up if he does well in OTAs and we can keep a cheap veteran on the practice squad instead of eating up 3 QB spots. That will allow us to save 6 mil AND get some assets for Tyrod. Or just keep him as a back-up. But I would not begin the season with Tyrod as a starter.
Btw, I don't even mind giving Fields a 2 year deal - say 20 mil or so (10 per) if that's what it takes to lure him in. He started in the league for 4 years now, and we know at worst we get a serviceable player. In this case even if we know he is not the answer after this year, we can draft a QB in 2026 and actually develop the guy and not have to throw him to the wolves right away since we would have veteran Fields who can start 1st season. Then maybe install the rookie as a later in 2026 or in 2027. But for me the 1st call in free agency is Fields and get a 1 or 2 year deal done.
He may get the “overpaid” (air quotes) in terms of annual salary but I would bet my life savings that he will not get a long term deal from anyone. It doesn’t make sense or cents for teams or him. From a NFL team perspective, his play up to date doesn’t warrant a long term commitment. He still fancies himself as a FQB despite what the league thinks. From this perspective. why would he want to lock himself into a long term deal when his value is low? Right not he just wants the opportunity to start and prove his true worth. The max I think he’ll get from a team 2 years w/ no guarantee money beyond year 1, if that. Again I see no risk for us other than the potential of hurting the pride of some still bitter closeted Zach Wilson truthers if he pans out.
I really think that AG will want TT to be an integral part of the transition because of his report with the offense. If he excels in camp might be given a solid chance. Injury is a concern for sure
that's kind of a funny segment. Fields is looking for his 3rd team in only his 5th season. Hes a beggar not a chooser now, so he probably sees "intrigue" with any team wearing the NFL shield at this point. I used to find fat chicks intriguing at 1:59AM sometimes
You know, I’m kind of coming around to this line of thinking… Firstly, I don’t think Fields is a very good QB…he’s a dynamic runner and that certainly helps a young QB, but he’s no pocket passer, he can’t read the field, and he doesn’t have that quick release…basically he is kind of like a more athletic or more mobile version of Zach, at least that’s how I see him. I didn’t want to draft him back when we took Zach (and by the way, I didn’t want to draft Zach either, but that’s another story), and I’ve seen nothing at all from him to make me thing that wasn’t the right call. Ok…so that being said…the list of QB options out there for us are not a heck of a lot. Cousins and Carr are probably the best QB’s who “may” become available, and if they are released and don’t require a trade, I do think both are better than any other option out there. But honestly, I hate Cousins for how he played us before off the field and I just think he’s a stat accumulator who doesn’t ever win when it matters on the field, and I wouldn’t want to pay him a lot. So he’s out. Carr I like better, but he’s gotten hurt a lot and I think there is a lot more wear and tear on him than the years playing may indicate, and in any case, he’s good not great. Wouldn’t want to pay a lot for him either. And if they are not released, I would absolutely NOT trade any picks for either guy. Hard pass there. So then what else is out there… Darnold is the curious choice…was his year a sign of maturity and things to come, or was it an aberration and the result of being on a very good team with a good offensive coach? Hard to know, and while I guess I’d consider him if it was a possibility, I’m guessing he’s want no part of the Jets in any case, and he’ll probably get a pretty solid offer from somebody…don’t know if the Vikings will pony up big bucks to keep him, but they can franchise him if they want, or else I’m guessing some other team will end up paying him. So not really a strong option for us I don’t think. The next tier of free agent QBs is like the Jacoby Brissett, Jamies Winston type guy…maybe a couple others in that range? Honestly, there’s no upside to either guy, and neither guy is really very good, so if that’s the level guy we’re talking about, we already have Tyrod Taylor in house that I would say is in that group. Then the draft…the word is there aren’t any real great QBs in this draft, but then QBs always get overdrafted, so hard to know who may fall to 7. I would NOT trade up for any of the QBs this year, and I’m not even sure any of them are worth the 7th pick anyway. And even if Cam Ward or Sanders fall to 7, I’m not sure we should take them…it may be better to trade down or just draft the best available OL or DL there at 7, and then maybe take a flier on a later QB. So given all that, Fields may be an option in that he’s young, he can run, and maybe there’s a (small) chance he develops into a serviceable QB. I don’t think it’s a high chance, but I’m kind of coming around to this line of thinking that while not a great option, none of the other options are great either. Will be interesting to see what we end up doing…
I'm not sure why people are floating Kirk Cousins. First of all, the Jets avoided paying this guy in what would have been a disaster, and now he has his tail between his legs? Get outta here.
What happened is the Jets got lucky by default that Cousins declined for less money with the Vikings. I know I'm not clear at times. Idiot franchise we have.
