Yes, I totally forgot about Pinnock, although if the Jets draft a S in the 2nd round, Pinnock might have to go to the PS.

Great summary. I think these groups fall into three categories:
    1) We really need help here to be competitive, or we're in trouble.
    2) We're pretty good here and don't need to draft for this position, although you can always upgrade if the right opportunity comes along.
    3) We are committed to what we have here, and we aren't upgrading no matter who is available in the draft.

I would only put WR and DE in category 1. I would only put QB in category 3. I would put all other groups in category 2.

The fact that WR and DE are in cat 1 probably mean that you use #4 and #10 on those positions if there is a reasonable opportunity to do so. However, if there isn't a great value to be had on those positions at #4 and #10, then you don't waste a pick on a lower-value target just because it's a position of need; I would say in that case take Sauce/McDuffie/etc. and go after your target position in round 2 when you can get better value.

RB is category 1. Carter needs a running mate, he’s not a workhorse. Look to get a RB in RD3 if we still have that pick after the DK Trade.

I’m just amped. I really can’t remember a draft where we already have our QB and this much premium draft capital.

There are sooo many prospects I love in this draft, there are a few I consider land mines. So it will be really interesting to see what JD does!

Good point in regards to our corner situation. I do think if the value is there they will still add a CB and try to sneak Dunn on the PC as you said. At 35 if a guy like Elam slips I just don’t see how they pass given all the injuries from last year.
On D I think Nathan Shepherd is going to be cut even though the resigned him.

RB looks to be the least depth on the squad… does that put Bryce Hall in the conversation at 38 if he’s there? Maybe. I prefer Jerome Ford in the 4th but it’s not out of the question.

I’m ok with his personality as long as that fist step off the ball doesn’t change.

Hutchison looks like he’s been on a cycle of juice this season there is some buyer beware there in my opinion.

I get the QB intrigue from last year, but this class with 4 and 10, plus 35 and 38 just offers such a great opportunity to make the team better. There is a real chance to get 4 high impact players in this draft, I’m very excited. I also think it’s a fun draft if you follow the other NFL teams… it’s so bizarre. 8 teams without 1st round picks, 7 teams with multiple 1st round picks. I’m really curious to see where guys like Gardner, Stingley, and Hamilton go amongst all of the top Edge Rushers, plus there are so many WR’s projected to the 1st round it will be interesting to see which ones teams prefer.

One point to keep in mind is how weak the top of the 1st round is viewed. I was watching a break down of edge rushers the other day and the analyst made the assertion that Hutchinson, who he viewed as clearly the best player in this draft, would not have gone in the top 10 in last years draft. I have seen similar assertions that the top half of this draft is viewed as very weak with the strength, the depth and the value being in late round 1, round 2 and 3.

Yah…the roster has gotten better I think, but it’s a bit funny as I remember having these types of conversations several times in the past and yet we’ve sucked anyway

I have to chuckle when I see some of these mocks that have us going DB early…I just don’t see it. JD has never prioritized DB for us…he’s all about up front talent…I don’t think Sauce is in play at all. I think our biggest need is edge rusher followed by WR then OL and LB. And I’m not comfortable with OL because I don’t trust Becton at all…I would absolutely draft OL high to eliminate that risk.

ideally I would like the first round to be Edge and WR, because I think there will be a run at WR in the teens.

feels like we are always out of position for the drafts sweet spots, but I would absolutely love to see edge at 4 and WR at 10

then round two could be used for OL and DB

at some point we need to draft pass rushers…it’s been a decade since we had John Abraham….we need to fix it

and while I like Moore a lot, and Davis ok as a #2, and I like Berrios a lot as a #4/#3 type guy, all of them have been hurt too much, and we have literally nothing behind them. To me,WR is a HUGE need

yeah I agree with your categories pretty much

my only comment is that I wouldn’t over worry about “value”. That is what has led to us not having a pass rusher or receiver…I’m not saying reach like crazy, but I don’t want to get too cute like two years ago when we ended up with Mims because we thought the “value” was in trading down.

when you need help as badly as we do at edge and WR, I’m ok taking the best edge at 4 and the best receiver at 10 instead of getting cute at 10 and then missing out on the better receivers, for example.

if you like the guy…take him. I’d rather reach a little bit for edge or receiver than take someone like Hamilton or Gardner and end up with the 8th best receiver. That’s how we end up with the likes of Mims or Zuniga…enough of that shit

Thanks. They will have to try to sneak Dunn onto the PS regardless, unless they only keep 4 safeties, and keep a 7th CB over a 9th OL or 10th DL. You know how JD and Saleh are with the trenches. I would be shocked if they keep 7 CBs. If they draft one, then that means either Hall or Echols will have to be traded or the Jets try to sneak him onto the PS, and I think they'd lose him to another team at that point. I just don't see them doing that. I think they give the youngsters one more season and see with a better pass rush and the addition of Reed, if they improve enough. If not, then they look to take a CB in 2023.

I agree regarding Shepherd. I think he was just insurance in case they didn't get one they liked in the draft.

I agree that RB has the least depth on the squad. They have Carter as the starter. Right now Coleman is the top backup/rotation back, but he can't stay healthy. Johnson isn't reliable as a receiver or blocker. He needs to be replaced. Perine isn't a scheme fit. Walter is a PS-level player imo. I don't think they take Breece Hall or any other RB in the 2nd round. That's too early. I think most of the Niners RBs were taken in the middle and lower rounds.

Why should the Jets take a RB in the 2nd when there is a plethora of RBs in this draft who are good scheme fits and will be available in the 4th or 5th round? James Cook will probably go in the 2nd or 3rd round, but if not, he would be a great choice. Ford would be a great choice. Others are Dameon Pierce, Tyler Allgeier, Kyren Williams, Pierre Strong Jr., Tyler Badie, Rachaad White, Abram Smith, ZaQuandre White, and maybe Hassan Haskins. Many Jets fans think they need a power-type back. If the Jets agree, then Pierce, Allgeier, White, Smith, Haskins and maybe Brian Robinson are under consideration. That offense needs a FB. The Jets re-signed Bawden, the FB they acquired fairly late last season. I don't think they would have re-signed him if they didn't plan on keeping him, but I assume that he would be the #4 in the rotation, and would be used primarily as a blocker and receiver. If the Jets want more of a HR threat, then Cook, Ford, Strong, and maybe ZaQuandre White are under consideration. Strong ran a 4.37 40 I believe. It will be interesting to see whom they take at RB, and I most definitely believe that they will take a RB.

Thanks! I like your categorization in the bold, but have one slight disagreement about one position group. I think RB belongs in category 1. It has the worst depth of any position group on the team at present. MC is the starter but he missed games last season. With his slighter build, like Coleman, that could continue to be a problem. Coleman is the top rotation/backup, and he can't stay healthy. Johnson is not a reliable receiver out of the backfield and not a reliable blocker. He needs to be replaced. Perine is not a scheme fit. Walter is PS-level player imo. They re-signed the FB they added at some point later in the season (Nick Bawden), so they must like him and plan on keeping him. If they want a bigger, power-type back they could look to add one of Dameon Pierce, Tyler Allgeier, Abram Smith, and Rachaad White. They could also opt to go for a HR threat at RB like James Cook, Jerome Ford, or Pierre Strong, Jr. I don't think they'll draft two RBs this year, although I don't think it would be a waste or a bad idea. They could add a HR threat and draft a power-type back, and Carter the 2 rookies, and Bawden would be their RB corps. As it is, I think they will draft one RB, and their RB corps will consist of Carter, Coleman, Rookie and Bawden. Then they'll probably look to replace Coleman next year and possibly Bawden as well.

Spot on! I agree with everything except the doubt about Becton, but I understand your and others' concerns/doubts regarding him. I'm confident that he's going to come back as a man on a mission and play like his hair is on fire.

It's easy for any of us who follow the draft closely to fall in love with players. I've done it, we all have. The key, however, is that we have to look at the roster, whom we have already, how many of each position group we're likely to be able to keep, and what the GM's and HC's philosophies are, as well as team needs, and BPA. As you clearly stated, JD and Saleh are ALL about the trenches. Saleh even said that he doesn't need a topflight CB in his D. He later said he wants a CB who can cover man to man, but again, that doesn't necessarily mean taking one in the 1st round at pick #4. Saleh wants a powerhouse DL. JD wants a powerhouse OL to protect his QB and open up rushing lanes for his RBs. CB is nowhere near the biggest need on this team. It is the deepest position group we have.

Also, JD, Saleh, and MLF have constantly talked about speed, about how it kills, and how they want it. They're not going to draft London or Bell at WR. More than likely, they're going to take one of Wilson, Burks, Olave, Watson, Pickens, Dotson, Robinson, and Doubs.

I see our needs as follows.

WR - topflight potential #1 for Zach and the offense as neither Davis nor Moore could stay healthy last season, and beyond them we don't have much

Edge - Lawson's return and effectiveness are in question and we have needed to draft a topflight Edge since Abraham was traded. The pass rush is the key to our pass defense. Hopefully, the rookie will start across from Lawson, but we could be looking at the rookie and Martin or Huff starting if Lawson isn't ready to go when the season opens. JFM can play some Edge, but will probably play more at DT on passing downs. At most, we will only keep 5 Edges this season, and maybe only 4. Lawson, the rookie, Huff and Martin are locks. The last spot (if there is one) will be between Anae and Zuniga.

RB - We have MC, who couldn't stay healthy last season, Coleman who can never stay healthy, an unreliable Ty Johnson, Perine who isn't a scheme fit, and Walter a PS-level player

OT - We have Fant and Becton, and Becton has questions as to whether he can stay healthy and play at a high level in this scheme. After that we have Conor McDermott and Edoga. Both could easily be upgraded and need to be upgraded.

S - We have Whitehead who is very good, LaMarcus Joyner who hasn't been good in 3-4 years and who is older, coming off a serious injury & missed all of last season, Pinnock a converted CB who showed some promise last season, Davis whose time is running, Parks an ok vet, and Riley who is ideally just a STer. Neither Davis nor Riley may make the team. We could possibly get by with Joyner and Pinnock at FS, but with a chance to draft one of Dax Hill, Lewis Cine, and Jaquan Brisker, I would be surprised if the Jets don't take one. It's not every year that there's a strong, deep S class like this.

LB - Mosely's a rock. Quincy Williams showed promise last season. The Jets are supposedly high on Sherwood and Nasirildeen, but they only played for a minute and then spent the rest of the season on IR. We need another top level player to either start at the other LB spot or be stiff competition for Sherwood and Nasirildeen.

DT - Quinnen Williams is very good as one of our starters. He is a 3T DT. We have excellent depth behind him in JFM and Marshall (who may have to go to the PS this season). At the other DT position Solmon Thomas is really the only quality player we have. Rankins sucks vs the run, and wasn't that good pressuring QBs. Shepherd was re-signed strictly as cheap insurance. Ideally, the Jets draft Travis Jones or Devante Wyatt in the 2nd round and cut both Rankins and Shepherd.

OG - Our starters are solid in Tomlinson and AVT, but for depth we have the despised GVR and Feeney, who was decent at C late in the season but pretty bad at RT earlier in the season.

TE - We signed two solid TEs in Uzomah and Conklin, but after them is the unproven Yeboah, Griffin who sucks and Wesco who is a marginal NFL:player. Griffin and Wesco need to go. Yeboah can be given another year as the #4 TE, but we need a viable #3 TE in case one of Uzomah and Conklin get injured so we don't have to stop running 12 formation plays.

C - McGovern is a good C, and Feeney played well starting in McGovern's place late in the season. McGovern's contract is up after next season. They could try to draft his future replacement or draft a versatile IOL who could upgrade both C and OG depth. Perhaps someone like Dylan Parham or Cole Strange, who would have some potential to become the starter at C.

CB - More than likely imo they only keep 6 this season. Hardee is a lock for STs. Reed will start at one CB spot. MC II and Guidry have the Nickel/Slot CB position nailed down. That leaves 2 spots for Hall, Echols, and Dunn. Supposedly, the Jets like all 3. As it is, they're going to have to try to sneak Dunn onto the PS. If they were to draft a CB they would undoubtedly lose one of Hall and Echols. I don't think they're willing to do that. The Jets need a ballhawk, but I think they give their young CB corps another year since they were all young, learning a complex scheme and adjusting to the NFL. With a better pass rush and the addition of Reed, they should be better this season, perhaps a lot better. If not, then I think they will look to draft a CB next year. If they draft a CB in the upcoming draft, I think it will be another lower round pick who is a ballhawk and perhaps a return man who can compete for a roster spot, and then stash on the PS this season.

QB - Wilson is a lock as the starter Flacco is the backup. White is strictly insurance.

Spot on! I totally agree! That's how under Mac we never addressed a number of position groups and kept drafting DTs.

Hutchinson would go top 10, that’s just something people like to say for shock value. A huge part of this perceived weakness at the top of the class is just that there aren’t elite QB prospects. If you took out the 3 QB’s from last year, Ekwonu, Hutchinson, and Gardner would definitely slot into the top 10, and possibly others depending on team preferences.

Last year was a great class for offense, but this year is a great class for defense. Edges, Defensive Tackles, Corners, Safeties, Linebackers, all better than last year.

Agree to the letter with your assessment of our roster….I think really the only difference is I’m not as confidant in Becton but I hope to be proven wrong.

James Cook? I never pictured Carter as the “thunder” part of our RBBC

Who says there has to be a thunder? Maybe that's a piece they add next year or they look to Bawden to provide. The Jets want speed. IMO MC is more quick than fast. Cook or Ford are HR threats from anywhere on the field any time they touch the ball. That would give our offense a whole new dimension.

Thunder is always a good idea as the D gets worn down. Imagine Breece Hall and Carter having a 70/30 split the 1st 2Qs and a 30/70 split in the 3rd and 4th?

We see what the Colts did with a special running game and little else.

*I want to trade Bryce Hall for a 4th after we draft Sauce but having 2 B. Hall’s might make passing on Sauce worth it.
