They're all better teams talent-wise than we are. They all have a lot less backups playing than we do, and non-opening day starters. No we didn't beat the Saints and Ravens but they're decent enough wins for a gutter team as we are.
Oakland has a better o line but definitely a worse defense and just as many injuries or missing starters as us. Dallas has had horrible coaching all year. They also lost to the bears, that doesn't make the bears all of a sudden some great team. And as for the Steelers it was Duck Hodges at the most important position in football. If they can't use Duck as an excuse for losing that game I don't think you can use Luke Falk as an excuse for us losing.
Duck Hodges was 3-1 as a starting quarterback coming into the game. Obviously they were winning in creative ways, but you can't always poke holes in the wins and rip the coach for the losses. And the point was, before you dragged something off topic in, that the coach is doing something right on opening drives. It'd be great to transfer it deeper into the games as well, but you can give credit on things that he's done well and stop being such an agenda-driven cynic.
He will get credit if he ever becomes a good coach. But he scored half as much on opening drives and he did through the rest of all of those games. Starting games is nice but finishing is better. He can run a script he has had a week to prepare but then after that he's useless .
How is “why can’t we continue the success of our first drive” not relevant to “Jets #1 on opening drives”? I’d say the two are very related and by creating a post about the Jets being the #1 opening drive, you opened up the thread to a discussion about why the Jets can’t continue that success.
Here's another tidbit to hang our 2020 hats on: NY Jets D-Line was #1 against the run in terms of fewest yards allowed per rush attempt (3.3). And #2 in rush yards allowed per game (87.9). And the Jets have stuffed runs on 3rd or 4th and short for no gain or a loss on a league-best 30% of the 397 attempts against them (NFL average is just 19 percent). Gregg Williams and Andre Carter (Dline coach) have done a really good job. Without Avery Williams and Mosely. 2020 could be really special! If you're on NY Daily News today, check out the cool game Carter plays with his d-line.
The defense definitely is better than the offense, if we sign a decent cb1 and/or edge it gets even better. Not to mention Mosley back... at least one of our coaches know how to coach.
Moving on to special teams, our NY Jets have the top punt returner in all of football (going into week 17). Braxton Berrios leads the league with 11.6 yards per attempt. Braxton was a good pick up by JoeD. Braxton was a final cut by NE and they hoped (badly) to bring him back to their PS. NE drafted Braxton in the 6th round and he was viewed by NE as their next Danny Amendola. But JoeD was prepared and all over it. Win: NY Jets. And then there was that trips right 50 yard catch and run in the Raiders game.
One thing that bothers the hell out of me about Gregg Williams is he's too big a risk taker. He leaves guys out on islands that have no business being out on islands Can he coach defense and motivate? Yes absolutely. But he's too much a riverboat gambler. A bit of conservatism would do him good
Having decent corners would also help him. And a pass rusher so he doesn't have to blitz Adams as much.
That's the way the league is now lotsa stupidity going around. That's part of the reason why a guy like Jason Garrett who makes calculated, logical, smart decisions a superb technician is on the outs in Dallas. If he took more stupid chances I think some call it 'showing guts' he'd be okay for the modern NFL.
He’s made some truly awful decisions this year and it has nothing to do with him being conservative. It has to do with him not being good at his job. The Vikings game can be pinned solely on Garrett. Taking Cooper out last weekend? I mean he’s been bad, there’s no two ways about it. And in terms of Williams... that’s who he is. And it’s hard to complain too much while I do agree with you to an extent. It drives me insane when Burgess ends up covering a running back on a wheel route. I feel like it happens once a game.
