Fair article. Nothing to disagree with. Said the same thing about Eli after his 3rd season, where everyone said he had one more year until the Giants unloaded him and his HC because one wasn't a leader and the other couldn't control his players. Same movie.
First of all, I don't think Mark should be calling out anyone in the media. That is not constructive in any manner (see Santonio and the offensive line). Keep it in house. I commend him for his approach and that is a sign of maturity. Jay cutler has been labeled a douche by a lot of people because he did that very thing. BUT....I get the sense even behind closed doors that he doesn't bark at people enough when they screw up and maybe he doesn't feel he's far enough along in development to actually be the one who's doing this. It's easy for Tom Brady or Peyton Manning to bark at their players and get mad because they're that good. Maybe Sanchez doesn't feel he's there yet so he's not as hard on them. It's a fine line to walk. Kinda like when Wayne Hunter is yelling at someone...you're like "dude, seriously?". Although i agree with Hunter saying what he said and applaud him, it's hard to have credibility when you're not one of the best players on your team but if you look at all the good QBs, they make sure their players get in line one way or another.
yeah, that is a very good point. everyone wanted Eli gone and thought his "aw shucks" demeanor was a big problem. and then it won him a superbowl
He should have been developed for a year or two. And he's right Sanchez needs to step up and have some balls. You can't lean on LT for all the leadership forever
Agree, but not just Sanchez. Everybody in those meetings should have said something. Schotty, Kerley, Plax, Sanchez, Greene, LT. The list goes on and on. I am glad all this crap came out so the organization can deal with it and clean it up.
I disagree with your agreement. Jenkins is basically telling Mark he should tell EVERYTHING that occurred in private. Shall he tell the public when he went to the Mens room, too? It's painfully obvious that Jenkins couldn't give two shits about what's going on with the JETS. He has even admitted that he hasn't been around the team AT ALL. He's now part of the Media Hounds and their own brand of "Circus" looking for ANYTHING to put in the Paper the next morning. He's no longer an NFL Player and now he's no longer thinking like one.
I agree, what is MS supposed to do? He is leading by example. There will come a time when this becomes his team right now there is some turmoil that needs to be addressed. I hate the media they are so extreme in everything, I know they do it for ratings but that's why i don't pay too much attention to them.
Rich Cimini did mention that Sanchez and Holmes did get into an exchange during one of these meetings. I really think Jenkins is reaching a bit here. He was in the locker room, but at the end of the day Sanchez had only been in the league 2 years. Jenkins keeps mentioning that the jets lost leadership, but at the end of the day it makes no sense to pay a guy like shaun ellis 4 million just for leadership. If the jets did that it would make it a lot harder to cut santonio because santonio's guaranteed money would count against the 2011 cap if he is cut before early february.
How can a guy who hasn't shown any leadership qualities on the field show it in the locker room? Not everyone possesses this most important quality to be a success. Besides, you're dealing with quite a collection of thugs in that locker room who have no idea how to be a team. Just look at how these classless sore loser douchebags acted on Monday when the press was around. Jets will be lucky to go 6-10 next season. This organization has a very long history of not recovering very quickly from such meltdowns.
2000 - disappointing 8-8 2001 -2002 back to back play-offs incl AFC East Championship 2005 4-12 w/the preacher 2006 play-off appearance 2008 Scary similar "meltdown" 2009 -2010 Back to back AFCCG appearances
I don't appreciate the shots at GQ pics and all, but Jenkins is right on this one - leader is not a crowd pleaser. The responsibility of a leader is that much heavier for that reason.
He was laughed at in the locker room when he stood up to speak. People would snicker. Tiki never took him seriously. Strahan did but with a little bit of sarcasm in it. I love overreactions when NFL history is the answer to most problems. Its not like this has never happened to any other team. Just like most Jets collapses - there are games similar or worse. But the Jets are cursed right?
Yes, IF the Jets had a good season, and IF they made the playoffs, and IF IF IF. The problem is that they are NOT in the playoffs and they had a shit year and are falling apart for all the world to see thanks in part to lack of leadership. If they were any good we wouldn't be complaining about how much they suck right now. And IF I had a few million bucks in my bank account I would rich.
They were two plays away from the playoffs (Sanchez 3rd INT in Miami and Houston 2-pt conversion) where they would have beaten the Texans this week. Pretty thin line between good season and shit season there.
