who cares if we promised him? teams say all sorts of things and makes all sorts of promises during the run up to the draft - they don't mean anything. every year players are promised all sorts of things and then those promises wind up not being worth much because this is a business and teams makes business decisions, they don't worry about a promise that may have been made to 4 different players. Drafting the BPA is a good strategy that has worked for many successful organizations. There are exceptions - but typically drafting BPA is a sound approach. Coples was BPA and he looks to be progressing very well.

BPA available only works if there is a clear cut difference between the players and you don't have loads of holes to fill. Teams like the Pats and 9ers can get away with it because they are playoff teams without any rookies making an impact. This year we need players to come in and start games.
