The last realistic chance for a few years? I'm not sure we have a realistic chance this year, for various reasons. Not being a "SoJ" darksider or anything, I just cannot see where we are a better team this year than last. I hope I am wrong.
Where have you been the last few months? I have been posting this for those many months that after this non PO season RR contract will NOT be extended & MT will be axe & the merry-go-round will be started again & it will be another 5, 7, 10 years before we maybe true contenders again if WJ wants to pony up the $$$$$$$$.
i think 2 years ago was the last time the jets realistically had a chance. with this offense, i dont see us as real contenders. the defense would need to play at a 85 bears morphed into 2000 ravens level on the flip side ZERO of those players you mentioned is even remotely irreplaceable. and other then brandon moore, im not sure you'd notice the loss of any over their replacment. those guys scream average and replaceable.
The core of the Jets is still there. The long term problem I see is signing Revis and remaining financially stable. It appears the jump in salary cap many were hoping for in 2014 is not going to happen. While the Jets have proven they are good enough to win without a QB the last 3 years it is not a sustainable philosophy. Either Sanchez needs to develop into a top 30 QB or we need to upgrade and bring in a journeyman who can take us to the next level. I would expect next year we will be drafting a QB in the first 3 rounds.
People have been posting that the Jets are a one season "win now" team for the past 5 seasons- from 2008 on. It is all BS. Roster turnover in the modern NFL is a way of life and retooling is not hard to accomplish. The biggest problem the Jets have moving forward is letting Sanchez finally develop properly, which does not appear to be happening with this Tebow crap, and deciding whether Revis is worth the outlandish money he is going to demand. As for the offense, it is hard to say if the Jets are unskilled or just young. If Hill and Kerley develop, the WR corps is set for years. Powell can be the RB or a RB can be drafted. RBs are easy to find and few NFL teams spend big money on that position. Hopefully, Tebow is a one year wonder. The Jets need to see if Howard is a player. Then next year the holes to fill are TE (pay Keller or not) and RG (Moore gets cut). As for the defense, the DL is filled with young promising players. If they develop, then the pass rush makes Revis a luxury rather than a necessity. No CB is worth $15 million a year. If Revis will play for $11-12 a year, he will stay a Jet. If he is still looking for $16+ million, good riddance.
That's funny. Sanchez is top 25 AT LEAST. C'mon, there is FIVE rookies starting. He needs to take the next step to top 10 or 15. If Sanchez isn't better than top 30, we better just start the Matt Barkley, Logan Thomas, Tyler Wilson sweepstakes.
I agree with anyone that says that it begins and ends with Sanchez. If he takes the next step then we should be alright.
People always complain about Sanchez. Granted I'm not happy with his development. But what would the Jets do if he did play like a Manning or Brady, and then demanded to be payed accordingly. As it is the team is strapped for cash and had difficulty paying for its current roster. Just seems to me that problem is a mismanagement of resources and players. If that's the case then its not as simple as getting a good QB. Let's say Manning wanted to play for the Jets but we had to trade away players with high salaries, Holmes and Revis. So now would we be better?
The Jets made decisions to overpay Holmes and Cromartie to try and win big in 2011. Unfortunately, the OL deteriorated, and the defense wasn't up to normal standards. Holmes and Cromartie each have 1 more big year, then both become tradeable, I believe. I don't think Revis is going anywhere, but Cromartie may. As many have pointed out, the Jets' window is in Sanchez's hands. If Mark improves to a top 10 level or so, the window will be open for years with the DLine, QB and parts of the OL in place. If Sanchez falters, it may be a few years. But you never really know.
Don't worry about cap issues those can all be addressed up the road - focus on this season - its go time !!!
we will cut scott, pace and e. smith. we will also cut/resign j. smith, another low cap number ... the alone drops us beneath the cap brick and harris have high base salaries that can be converted to bonuses and that will free up around another 8 mill in cap space ... revis will sign a new deal that will likely lower is cap number from 9 mill and we also have 6 mill to carry over from this year ... by my count thats at least 15 mill in cap room were looking at next year now on to something else ive been thinking about for a while ... if baltimore keep dicking around with flacco, theyre going to have to franchise him after the season if thats the case, i firmly believe that our starting safeties next year will be laron landry and ed reed ... think about that
I am not worried about the cap next year. I am more worried about what the Jets will do at Qb if Sanchez does not improve. Which I frankly doubt he will do to an extent that begins to justify the fifth pick the Jets used to get him and all else invested in him. The reason the window has most likely closed is that the Jets pursued a strategy with Favre's departure that relied on strength elsewhere on the team to cover for a new Qb who was, it was hoped, going to play well enough to allow the rest of the team to win. With a great deal of luck that approach carried the team to the Champ Game two years in a row. Since then Sanchez has not developed enough to compensate for a drop off elsewhere, particularly at OL, WR, RB and overall speed at LB. Hence we saw 8-8 last year and a team that today looks no better than the one that finished last seaon losing 5 of their last 8. This time next year I expect one of three things. The Jets will have played 12 with Sanchez showing development adequate to stick with him and move forward. Or they will decide that he is not the answer, and will have to be replaced. Or in some middle ground the questions about him are not clearly answered, and the Jets muddle through into 13 with as unclear a picture as they have right now. Given the history of the franchise, my guess is it will be that third, middle alternative.
I'm worried about the cap next season. Yeah, there's some manipulation to be done but the player available to manipulate in terms of cap numbers have tended to manipulate the Jets instead of the other way around.
Give up Revis and the others you are talking about, bart scott, calvin pace and the two smiths . . .. not only will that empty the D, but will be almost impossible to replace. The upside if any, we will get a very high draft picks for a while . . . .
