And they didn't turn it around for 7 years. Great.

Sanchez's tenure here will end poorly, but in 2009 the Jets really, really needed a QB for the future.

Lest we forget, our 2008 QBs were Brett Farve (retirement), Kellen Clemens, and the immortal Brett Ratliff.

Hall of Famer out the door, Kellen Clemens a pretty serious question mark, and an unknown quantity that never amounted to anything.

Lions took Matt Stafford # 1 overall (and are still a crappy team); had we taken him maybe it would've worked out better, but, any reasonable GM would've looked at that roster and said "If we can get a QB....we have a shot going forward" (which was true, that 2009 team was pretty solid). So, the Jets took a shot and drafted the only potential franchise QB left on the board, Mark Sanchez.

The other QBs in that draft:

#17- Josh Freeman to the Bucs
    # 44- Pat White to Dolphins, who they planned to use as a RB
    # 101- Stephen McGee to the Cowboys
    # 151- Rhett Bomar to the Giants...etc

Only other 'notable' name there is Curtis Painter, who went at pick 201, drafted by the Colts for his soft hands, used to carry Peyton's jock around.

The only thing we could have done was start Clemens, and draft someone else. We would have kept the picks we sent to Cleveland, gotten some more depth, and at 17 we could've taken either Josh Freeman, Percy Harvin or possibly Clay Matthews.

Hindsight is 20/20, but I think we took the sensible shot on a franchise QB, and it didn't work out. That's football.

Had we gone with Harvin or Matthews, we would've had a productive player, but likely would not have made the playoffs in either 2009 or 2010, it's debatable if Freeman or Clemens would've gotten us that far, and I don't think either of those guys goes to two straight AFC title games. (remember, as hot/cold as Sanchez was at times, in those 4 road playoff games, he was pretty solid. He beat Palmer, Rivers, Peyton & Brady on the road, no small feat).

So, we're sitting in a pile of dung right now, but...would be really have traded the runs in 2009 & 2010 away for Clay Matthews? He's a nice piece, but, he alone doesn't change our lot in life. Had we waited until 2010 for a QB, the available QBs? Tebow, Jimmy Claussen, Colt McCoy...none of them are materially better than Sanchez.

The problem with trading up is that if it doesn't work out, it sets you back 5 years. So, here we are, back 5 years, with likely 1 more run in us before Mangold/Brick/Revis are goners (though Revis may likely be gone before then).

Man.....Mo Wilkerson may have very well saved the day with how he's come on because we've had 3 absolute stinkers.

Mo Wilkerson didn't save anything. He is an excellent player but the damage of the drafts from 2007 to 2010 is only just beginning to be felt. And yes Darrelle Revis was a great pick on the 14 but the Jets only got two players out of that draft.

It is very likely that this is the value the 2013 Jets got out of the 2007 to 2010 drafts:

Darrelle Revis, David Harris, Matt Slauson OR Vladimir Ducasse, Kyle Wilson.

4 drafts turning into 4 players. Maybe you add McKnight to that but maybe you don't also.

Now you go to 2014 and Revis very possibly leaves and Harris is on the bubble at 30 years of age and slowing and you wind up with a 2 player contribution to the 2014 roster from the 2007 to 2010 drafts: a mediocre G and CB.

That's when what has gone on the last half decade really bites into the Jets.

You mean 2.5 years right? He has been awful since the middle of last year, and has gotten progressively worse this year.

    Bust.........

Did anyone one else notice the lack of support this kid got the last 2+ years. How many wide receivers since 2009? Like 10 or something. Shotty, now no Keller, no number one WR (who isnt a number one), and for some time no run game.

You guys have a really high ceiling for bust, when you have a QB drafted 5th overall, given millions in guaranteed money, and he never cracks the top 20 in any statistical category, sits bottom five in the league in completion % and rating, and basically single handedly sinks two back to back seasons with his horrific play and is essentially benched and cut, he is a HUGE FUCKING BUST!

Sanchez is a huge bust, he rode the back of a top five defense and running game, shit Rex Grossman has playoff wins.

This is a little overboard. He went south quickly, but he had some really good success here. He was mismanaged and the talent he was growing with was ripped from him but the morons in the FO. He's no where near the level of Gholston.

technically yes, but that was because the JETS didn't have a 1st rd pick (used on Moore in the supp. draft). Wolfe said that pick would've been used on Favre, but definitely was going to be chosen with their 2nd, if ATL didn't F-it up (you've probably seen the video of Favre picking up the phone w/ the JETS)

Wolfe later went to the Pack and gave ATL a 1st rder for the guy they drafted in the 2nd........ and the JETS went another decade without drafting a good QB. :shit:

No QB bust has a 95 rating in 6 playoff games

No QB bust has 11 comeback wins

He had 32 touchdowns last season. That's not a bust

He had the potential, showed flashes, but his brain was fried by utterly inept coaching

He's still a bust, but there are ignorant posters who refuse to acknowledge that he has had some positive moments here. Still can't be drafted 5th overall and have his career in NY all but over after year four and not be a bust, at least for us. His career isn't over yet, but his career as a starter in New York is in serious jeopardy obviously, and if you're a top 5 pick quarterback, and you're benched at the end of the year in your 4th season after playing horrible football, that's bust-worthy.

Putting him at the level of Blair Thomas, Gholston and others is dumb though. He's not nearly that bad. But he's part of a string of draft classes that have offered very little, as Br4dw4y pointed out.
