Here is a best case scenario that I hope to see at some point this season: DC sends out Ellis, Robertson, Kimo on the DL and Thomas, Vilma, Hobson, Barton as the LB's lined up in a 3-4 Next thing you know Kimo slides over to play DT, Thomas fills in at DE and the voila a 4-3 front magically appears and the QB is left scratching his head and winds up blowing a time-out. This could also happen the other way - going from a 4-3 to a 3-4. It can also happen with a variety of different personnel based on the depth that we have acquired. In year 1 of the transition this will be the best way to make the 3-4 work with the ? that we have at NT. Otherwise if we just run the 3-4 as a base offense for more than 50% of the game - things might get ugly.
Do you honestly expect a lot of production from 3-4 linemen? That is ludicrous. You are chasing the wrong ghosts. All of the dominant 3-4 teams have highly renowned players on the line. That doesn't mean they are going to lead the league in sacks. Casey Hampton, Jamal Williams and Vince Wilfork are widely known as some of the top DTs in the game. Richard Seymour has been argued to be the greatest DL in the game and the list goes on and on. Just look at Pittsburgh, San Diego and New England, those are the premier 3-4 teams. Dallas is getting there, San Francisco has a ways to go and Cleveland is improving exponentially.
