Kurt Warner, like Terrell Davis when healthy were among the most productive players at their position in NFL history. The goal of this game is to get to and win SB. Warner and Davis who I see as very similiar outproduced almost every HOF player at their positions in at least 2 years and lead their teams to SB's multiple times and won. To put it another way Warner has been more productive than Brett Favre, Dan Marino and Payton Manning by simply being better than any other player at their position in a short time frame in a very violent sport. His number weren't just good in his SB years than were historically great. There are a number of HOF QB's who played at a substantially lower level than Warner, never won a SB and all they have to hang their hat on is very good numbers and longevity. Warner has great numbers coupled with the Trophy.
I'd have to say yes at this point. I think he's damn annoying and his wife is eve worse, but he comes up big in big games and has put up several very good season. He'll make it. PRobly not first ballot, but he'll get in.
I want to clear all that up a tad because there are some errors. People who viewed the above may have thought Waterfield won four league titles. Waterfield only won two NFL titles- 1945 and 1951 with the Rams. He lost in 1949 and 1950. I'll present the same list but go with W-L in league title games. Warner 1-1 (will be 2-1 or 1-2 soon) Kelly 0-4 Aikman 3-0 Van Brocklin 2-3 (1-2 while sharing duties with Waterfield) Waterfield 2-2 (1-2 while sharing duties with Van Brocklin) Staubach 2-2 Luckman 4-1 Graham 3-3 in NFL (4-0 in AAFC)
Cuz you know those Giants were a fantastic team he worked with. He barely got a chance to know the system. Plus the guy was often injured. That's really his only flaw thru his career. Give him a break. He's easily HOF for me.
Yeah, he had a brutal game against the Giants in Week 1 with numerous fumbles. The next day Marc Bulger was named the starter for Week 2. I don't remember if it was due to poor play, necessarily. I thought it was a combination of both. His thumb injury was causing him to have trouble holding onto the ball. Maybe I don't recall this all too well?
You make a fantastic point. Don't forget he's not a dink and dunk guy like Chad. He REALLY is that accurate. Even the cardinals did not want him to start this year. He proved them wrong. Now people are realizing how great he actually is.
Here is another great point. Now don't get me wrong I believe Anquan and Larry are 2 of the best in the league hands down, but were they as dominating as they are now when they had Leinart throwing to them? They made him look alright, when he's really not that great.
But Warner has only played 3 full seasons, and 11 games in two more. If he wins the SB he shuld be considered. If not, probably not.
So you want to penalize the man cause he was injured??? His numbers make him a HOF QB..simple as that. If he was a Jet and brought this team to 3 Superbowls...there would be no argument from anyone here that Warner is a HOF QB. Warner - 65.4% comps, 2327 comps, 3557 attempts, 28,591 yards, 182 Tds, 114 INT's and a 93.8 rating. Namath - 50.1% comps, 1886 comps, 3762 attempts, 27,663 yards,173 Tds, 220 INT's and a 65.5 rating.
The rest of your argument is good, but time not playing because of injury should very much so be held against the guy. It drops draft choices, reduces contracts, and determines accolades. Why shouldn't it count in HOF consideration?
The only 2 time SB winner not in the hall is Plunkett. Warner hasn't played all that long and served as a backup for a couple of years yet he has about the same stats in 10 years as Plunkett did in 15. I think if he wins his second next week he is in.
It does count against him but the fact is he was so superb when healthy he did more than many HOF QB QB's did over the course of their entire playing time to help his teams get to and win SB which is the goal of the game. Warren Moon is in the HOF. The guy was a very good stat guy over a long period he never come close to Warrens level. Ken Stabler is another QB who should be in. Kurt Warner, like Terrell Davis simply blew the field away in their healthy years and carried teams to SB based on their stellar play. Curtis Martin who is a lock for the HOF never produced at a level to carry the Jets to a SB. If you can't over look steady excellent production, how can you over look outright greatness over a short burst in a game that puts a premium on violence where the average playing time is under 4 years?
