The Carrol reference was linking the idea of giving up on someone potentially too early and Bowles. Not saying he will be him, just making sure.
My contention is we didn't give up to early on Pete. Pete's SB teams wouldn't have happened without 2 drafts. Those two drafts were a direct result of his USC recruiting much of it against NCAA rules.
As usual you echo my exact sentiments but beat me to the punch in posting it. The penalties per se during a game are not worrying, all teams get them and that is down to players competitiveness. It's the critical stulpid penalties that drive me up the wall. Games are definitely won and lost on such things. Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
60% coaching and 40% talent We could easily be 2-2 if Bowles doesn't coach to not lose in Cleveland and possibly 3-1 if Bates wasn't so conservative early on in the Miami game. The only game where we were outclassed was in Jacksonville and even then, no adjustments were made to the Jags crossing patterns which allowed them to pick up easy yardage without having to change much. But, this roster lacks impact players. The OL badly needs an upgrade or three. We have no pass rusher and no game changers on offense. This falls on Macc.
The bolded is kind of silly, isn't it? After all, the Jets wouldn't have won SB III without the draft in which they added Namath. The Pats wouldn't have won their SBs without the draft in which they added Brady. The Colts wouldn't have won theirs without the draft in which they got Peyton Manning. I could go on and on.
Unlike the other drafts, Pete Carroll cheated after the drafts. He has violated NFL practice restrictions at least 3 times since 2012. He and the team has been fined and lost draft picks over this. The CBA that was agreed to severely limited both practice and contact practice to protect the players. Carroll had 2 great drafts, he also had more contact practice for young players than every other NFL team. This is clearly a problem for NFL coaches league wide. Harbaugh was caught once and fined. Unlike Harbaugh Carroll has been caught 3 times going back to 2012. Yes you're correct drafting is extremely important. In Pete's case he cheated in College and left USC in taters. He has consistently cheated in the NFL going back to 2012. People complain about the undisciplined nature of today's NFL. One of the reasons is there is a lack of practice since the 2011 CBA went into effect. It shows up league wide, particularly in early games with young teams. Pete cheated to get an edge.
That kind of cheating, I wouldn't mind seeing the Jets coaches do. The 2011 CBA was moronic. It's killing the game and injuries are up, not down, because the players aren't in game shape.
It was moronic on a lot of levels. Cause and effect is an interesting subject. How many none contact injuries are a result of not being in "game shape"? If you throw out none contact injuries and concussions that weren't concussions back in the day what evidence do you have that it's about "game shape". It might well be that year round weight training is leading to more injuries? It also might have something to do with more young players who aren't fully developed being forced to play because of the rookie wage scale? Lots of factors go into injuries including the size and speed of players.
It's mostly coaching and leadership. Bill Parcells took a Jets team that was 1-15 the previous year and, with almost no upgrades in talent at any position, coached that same team to 9-7. I don't think any coach could take this current Jets team to the Super Bowl, but I'm thinking a good coach could get between 7 and 9 wins out of them.
Sorry to get back to you so late, life has been crazy again for me. You make a very compelling case and as a Pats fan I am very familiar with his coaching in New England. But in all honesty, he never had a chance in New England and with the Jets. Bobby Grier had the complete confidence of Kraft and was a big reason why Parcells left. Carrol was never allowed to name most of his assistants and when Bill Belichick finally took over Bobby Grier was fired. But one of the last acts Bobby Grier did for the Patriots was discovering a QB from Michigan named Brady. Now back to Carrol. Bobby Grier did allow Carrol a decision on one draft choice named Tebucky Jones who was more of a safety than a Corner Back. Carrol was crucified by the Boston media over this pick and oddly enough Belichick tried to incorporate Tebucky Jones also in his defense with very little luck. But that crazy idea Carrol had of drafting bid dudes, big enough to be safeties, to be corner backs led to the selection of Sherman and the rest of the nasty secondary of the Seahawks. So Carrol's idea is now an accepted practice by teams to look for big cornerbacks to deal with the taller receivers today. Belichick was so impressed he ended stealing Brandon Browner from the Seahawks in free agency. Browner was a big dude at 6' 4 " 220 LBs and if it was not for him, Butler does not get that game winning interception in the Super Bowl. Study the video to see what I mean. Oddly enough Carrol and the Seahawks were a victim of a big Corner Back that came from their own team. Before we say Carrol built the Seahawks, John Schneider also had a lot to do with it also. You didn't have be a financial genius to realize there was no way the Seahawks were going to be able to keep all those talented players when their contracts ran out. With Wilson finally being signed for big bucks, they faced some serious financial issues. I believe they will finally be out of salary cap hell next year with 52 million to play with. I'm not arguing Carrol is a great coach, but he is a lot more smarter than be people give him credit for and I will not be surprised to see him have more success in the future. Sorry for the long winded explanation, need to work on that.
Seattle is going to be competitive because they have Russell Wilson. He's an elite NFL QB who rarely has a bad game. Pete will mostly win as long as Seattle keeps him. I thought they might have fired him last year because it was clear he lost control of his team a couple of times at the end of games last year. He came onto the field and his players pretty much ignored him. I think Wilson will keep them competitive for as long as he can stay healthy. Guys like Bill O'Brien who I think is one of the worst coaches in the NFL might end up being saved by Watson? Certainly Mike McCarthy owes Rodgers his long run in Green Bay.
