It's hard to tell with this FO if they view Clemens as Chad's backup or if they view him as heir apparent, but I think that if they are going to make a switch at QB it will happen this year... barring an amazing improvement from Chad over his performance last season. I'd take 6-10, however, I don't think this FO/CS would settle for that regardless.
So in other words, you're a tragic optimist. As long as we're "productive" in our losses this season, I'll live to see another day. Win now, etc., blah, blah. I'm thinking a small percentage of Jets fans will actually be CAPABLE of sitting through the true ramifications of "rebuilding", no matter how much lip service the idea is paid. All I want is for the Jets to go out every week and show me what's around the corner, that we're on the cusp. That's all I ask in the present. Last year was more than likely an anomaly, so dig in your heels to go 'backwards' on paper. If we don't...YAY! If, however, we get a good dose of regular season games in the FLAT and ZOMBIE and LIFELESS vein of last night (which I can't see), I'm filching Westhoff's cane to give a massive beat down. He's got a million of 'em, he'll never miss it. It's not like management told me to do it or anything. Hehe.
Granted, Chad had a shitty game, but that game was as important as a Madden PS game. See how things pan out, the first half of the season. If the CS thinks that Kellen is better than Chad, he will get his chance. By the way, Brady threw 2 picks last night, 1 for a score...Should he be benched?
...but what sort of position were we in if we had? A better one...? I can't see it, given how the team was constructed when he went down time #2 - and on the eve of infamy and the weeks following. 'Splain me. My gripe was not letting every scrub run the table when we were dead in the water. Bleh, if I rehash '05, I'll tear out my eyebrows in Roman Mourning. Hell, I may beat my breast and wail, too.
Not enough people on this site realize that football is not a rebuilding sport, like baseball. It's 'here and now,' especially in N.Y. We happen to have a great team with many great players on both sides of the ball. There is no reason why we cannot win it all this season. Chad knows what he did wrong, and just like he said at the after-game press conference, he will fix it. That's all. No problems. The sky is not falling, after game 2 of pre-season. If anything, it's good to get the bad game out of the system now, so the team knows how it feels to take a hit. But they will bounce back up and in a big way!
Ha. If we play the regular season like we did Friday we may luck out and get the number 1 overall pick in next year's draft and then we can draft a real franchise QB. (of course Oakland will ruin that for us and they will still probably need a QB by then)
Just beacause I think BB would have cut him doesn't mean I think we should have. The comparrison of Pennington to Brady is a bit of a joke don't you think. Brady threw two picks but also lead his team to a 14 to 7 lead at the end of the first period when both starting teams were on the field. He also has 3 SB which basically is the equivelant to a near lifetime pass as every being questioned as the starter although Joe Montana was unloaded before he was totally spent because SF had what they thought was a better talent ready to go. We drafted Clemens, we passed on Cutler and Leinart and this year we passed on Quinn a kid who was developed by none other than Charlie Weiss. (who since he left the Pats Brady has been far less of a big game QB) We must think this kid Clemens has some big time QB IQ to go with a very quick release and a decent arm? The question I have is how much better does Clemens have to perform than Chad to take the next step? Lienart and Cutler are NFL starters today. I'm going to bet that Brady will be getting some serious playing time this year. Plumer took Denver to the AFC finals a year ago and had a 7 & 4 record when Shanahan made the move. Shanahan is one of the best coaches in the business. I'm guessing that if Harris outperforms Barton in preseason Harris may well become the starter by game 2 or 3. Didn't Mike Taliaferro start game one of the 65 season? He was a decent QB but we drafted a guy to be the future of the franchise and he came off the bench in game 1.
Next year most of you will get your wish, Clemens will be the starter. You are all right, teams do not spend a 2nd round pick on a backup QB. He might be the starter at the end of the year if the Jets have a shitty season. I just hope is not Browning Nagle all over again. Hopefully they keep CP (after a paycut) as the backup in case Clemens is a flop -- in which case the Jets are really screwed, look around the NFL, teams with a *decent* QB suck... Whomever you support, I hope one of them can lead this team otherwise same ole Jets for the next few years. To CP's credit, at least he wins games when he is in there, not many Jets QB's can say that. May not be a Super Bowl but a win is a win.
Who needs stinking Super Bowls anyway? We can always hang our hats on 10-6 and blow smoke up our butts..
ok this shit is mad stupid with the "let's take pennington's head because he had one bad game". okay. Has he ever even had a preseason TD since his starter? and if he has how many? pennington has always been miserable in the preseason and yet he plays fine in the preseason and wins game! chill the fuck out!
It comes down to this, which ever QB Mangini believe is the one that can get us to the Super Bowl, he will be the starter. That being said, I do believe that right now, Chad is the better QB that will lead the team to more wins this year. I also believe that Chad is incapable of getting the team to the Super Bowl as the team stands right now, so yes I would be willing to have Clemens start and a 6-10 season this year in exchange for Clemens getting the experience necessary. I dont know if Clemens is the QB but we will never find out if he keeps sitting on the bench.
You aren't kidding. WHen you look abck at the two picks he threw, they weren't even because of his arm FCOL. He didn't see/look off the safety on the Sharper pic, which is a MENTAL error. Then he tried to put a ball into the Flat, while HE WAS BEING TACKLED, which again is a mental error. The only scary thing about that is when questioned, instead of saying, "I should have taken the sack" HE said something about throwing the ball at the Backs feet.
Wow, this is getting out of control. Losing a pre-season game should not be the precursor to doom and gloom on this board. In fact, I'm glad he made the mistakes now so he can hopefully learn from it and get it out of his system before the regular season starts. If anything, we need to be worried about the Oline situation, especially at guard and center. Shall we start blaming Chad for that too?
One bad game by Chad in a pre-season game in which he was throwing passes for the first time this year with the offense in a game situation, and you are ready to sell him out and go with another QB who has no proven professioal game experience....................... Threads like this make my stomach hurt.
im about to jump on the clemens wagon. and no im not biased, i see what chad brings to the table. but as time goes on hes not even doing what hes supposed to be good at. more INT's than TD's last year is a prime example. and not only does his inability to throw a deep ball hold back our passing scheme it also affects the running game. now I wont jump the gun, penny may be better for now. but if by midseason he looks like he did last yr I say its time for the Clemens era to begin. I remember watching him at Oregon and seeing pro potential. we drafted him 2nd rd, and if Penny cant fix his TD to INT ratio and keeps giving us more of the same, we have no choice if we ever want to be anything more than we are now.
