I hope so too and improvement of TE room was huge. A+ for that. I just don't want to settle with just TE room upgrade and hope Davis improves and Moore doesn't get injured. We need to do more, and obviously JD is trying. I think it will have to come down to the draft at this point though. I was surprised Hill became available, and JD nearly had a slam dunk acquisition, so maybe something else like this may come up, but wouldn't hold my breath. At this point I am thinking Garrett Wilson and one more 2nd round guy will complete the WR room and maybe someone like Cole back. Then we hope rookies step up, Davis improves, and Moore stays healthy.
I don't think I used word devastating, I was concerned we didn't add a good veteran at WR. I get that market is crazy for WR this year, and I understand why JD didn't do it, but I just disagree, particularly in Cooper's scenario, where we could have easily taken on his salary and could have dumped him next year if he didn't work out. I don't know about you, but I personally don't want to see Zach throw to Tariq Black, Smith brothers, Montgomery, Mims, etc - which is what he had to do since coming back from injury. Even Davis I thought while brought good things, also was bad at contested catches and drops. Moore was a bright spot but was injured a lot during camp and season. TE upgrades will help, but Zach is our biggest investment, and we need to do a lot more to help him. That's why JD went hard after Hill and reportedly after Cooper too, and didn't get him because of restructure, which Cooper later did anyway, but unfortunately for a team this didn't see restructure as a problem like JD and therefore got him. Anyway, if we disagree on this one, it's fine. Sky is not falling, there is draft to get better at WR and other positions. I would have much preferred to have someone of Cooper's quality prior to the draft, but we are where we are. Now the hope is JD picks us a stud or two WRs among others.
JD knows what he’s doing. He hasn’t veered from his strategy. Pay a player what he’s worth, don’t over reach. I think it’s more likely JD didn’t think AC was worth 20mm/yr so he wanted to talk about a pay cut before making a trade. If you want to believe JD didn’t fully go after someone he really wanted, that’s on you. I still don’t believe the “misjudged the market” with Anderson couple years back. Helping ZW is our #1 priority but as the CS has said, you can help ZW by making sure he doesn’t need to put up 28 pts ever week to stay in the game.
A WR/TE group of Moore, Wilson, Davis, Uzomah, Conklin, and draft pick should give Zach plenty of targets to throw to. I don't believe we need to draft two WR's.
Oh wow you don't like misleading information. How unique and admirable! I said we barely improved and in my next post compared the definite improvement of the roster with the relative lack of improvement of the team. I think it's pretty clear what the meaning was - not that we didn't improve whatsoever but that we barely did relative to the roster. I also can't find where I said "didn't improve our team from last year", so you're putting something in quotes that doesn't exist - but you don't like misleading info right?
Wasnt Gases record better with out JD, before JD got here at least we competed in games. It feels like the rest of the league is getting away from us. Yes we have a lot of draft picks in a draft with limited top notch talent. Miami started their rebuild. A total stripping down of the team ! yr before the Jets. They won 9 games in yr 2 ,the Jets won 4 games in yr 2. Last yr the fins first 3 picks made the all-rookie team. no jets did the same. Every Elite AFC team has seemed to make a major jump this off season and we have really done is overpay a good guard, signed a short cb and a decent safety (while losing Maye). It seems like JD is playing checkers when the adults are playing chess
Yup. Along with ZW development. But JD has already improved the offense. 2 new tight ends. New guard. Return of becton should solidify the line. I think the OL is a huge key to 2022. Coaches should have better feel for making the offense work. Rookies from last year could show improvement. Maybe our place kicker remains consistently good. If i remember correctly, most of the big moves in the AFC have been on the offense. Not so much defensively. Please correct me if I have forgotten defensive moves. So maybe an improved jets offense will put up enough points to keep them in games. Jets offense plays against opponents defense, not their offense. We should also have an improved defense. If JD hits on the draft or a trade we could surprise lots of folks.
That isn't the part I was referring to. The part I was referring to that made me think you were panicking is: "There wasn't much of a risk. The guy gets 1000+ yards almost every year, and even last year where he only got 865, he doubled up on the top WR the Jets. And if he doesn't work out we dump him next year. Of course he didn't go all in - Cooper is not Hill, but he wanted him still, and failed to get him, because Dallas didn't want to be bothered over a restructure when only 5th round pick is in play, and they already had it from Browns. Who by the way had no problem reducing to 5 mil. Here we are now with worse WR room than last year, and last year it was horrendous. All teams that went to SB had great WRs. Last two years it's Chase, Kupp, Hill himself, Evans, OBJ, Godwin, etc.. JD had better hit WR in the draft, that's all I am going to say, because there were good options in FA/trade market, where he could have done something, and he came up emptyhanded. I am not buying the narrative that we are OK with two TEs. That was good, but we MUST upgrade WR room too."
Well played. I’m on my phone so it’s a pia to scroll back for exact quotes so I shouldn’t use the “-“ I didn’t was read the 1st post so I’m going to take “lack of improvement” the same as “didn’t improve”. With the factors you’re including, I’d possibly agree there should’ve been more improvement. However, I would also include: rookie HC, rookie OC, rookie DC, rookie QB as factors and if I include those factors, I’m happy with the amount of improvement. *How much did the roster really improve from 20 to 21. QB - from QB who’s never had a winning NFL season to a QB who’s never had a winning season RB - from Old man lead back with rookie behind him to rookie with an old man behind him WR - improvements at wr are meaningless without a qb OL - improved DL - pretty much the same, right? LB - Added Mosley, a scrap heap, and 2 rookie safeties to play LB DB - pretty much the same. 2nd year starter and rookie to rookie and 2nd year starter at CB Can you believe we DOUBLED our wins with mild improvements to our roster and having a rookie, HC,OC, DC, and QB!?! Absolutely amazing.
Lets think about worse wr room than last year , at the same point in time ...before the draft. In 2021 going into the draft we had davis with high expectations, reliable crowder, cole with moderate expectations, mims with high hopes and tight ends nobody liked. Going into the 2022 draft we have moore with high expectations, reliable berrios, davis with moderate expectations and 2 tight ends that people seem to like. Ok, knowing what you know now which is the better group?
Things that Rich Kotite did in his 2 years at the helm: Drafted Hugh Douglas, Matt O'Dwyer and Kyle Brady (13 years in the NFL). Drafted Keyshawn Johnson, Ray Mickens and Marcus Coleman. That's 6 guys who played 10+ years in the NFL. Found Wayne Chrebet out of thin air - and nobody else in the NFL would have kept Chrebet around even after the camp he had in '95. Found Bobby Hamilton who had a very good career including starting on two of the Patriots championship teams. Signed a QB with some playoff experience to try to reset after the miserable '95 season. Didn't drop any of the valuables during his tenure. All of the players who were good coming into his tenure helped the Jets or some other team after he left. 4-26. Forget about everything else above the last sentence. 4-26. Joe Douglas. 6-27. Whatever kudos you want to hand out to him just remember Kotite brought a lot of talent in also and he didn't deep-six any of the guys who were here when he got here. 4-26. 6-27. They're about equal in terms of their overall effect on the Jets franchise right now.
Not panic, but a statement of fact about the state of WR receiver room and some frustration for not doing more in FA/trade market when opportunities were there. JD has a lot of work to do at the position.
TEs are not WRs. Yes, they will help Zach compared to last year, and that's great, but wouldn't you want to have a good and deep WR room too? Do you remember whom Zach was throwing to second half of the year? Smiths, T Black, Mims, Montgomery, etc... Most games Berrios was #1, while he should be #4. Then even he got injured. Zach relied on total shit at WR positions, and that doesn't help his development. I hope you are not suggesting we keep the same WR room that yielded garbage half a year, and just settle on better TEs and hope for the best.
What more should he have done? He doesn't sign guys for the sake of making moves. There's clearly a plan in place and he's sticking to it. He tried to get at least one of Cooper, Hill, and Jones and the trades didn't work out for various reasons. I'm happy he's not idle and wasting but also not panicking.
