Byars did flatten Greene when the Jets played Carolina in early December that year, but it was about a month before the Denver game. On the visitors side of the field we could see Green come off to the bench dazed with his head bleeding.
the brien fg is tough, but we would have lost in the next round to NE...which would have created all sorts of new bad patriots memories the mo lewis hit is a good one...but it doesn't lead Jets greatness for some reason the ensuing kickoff in the 1998 afc championship game sticks out we were up 10-7...and just lost all the momentum when they recovered the kick any of the 3 turnovers in that game could be used, but that was the first of the sequence a victory over denver would have likely led to a superbowl...the falcons were a bad team o well
I didn't even list the fake spike. That was one of the worst individual moments but as I have posted on here many times I believe that play was good for us long term. it led to the losing streak to end the season which led to Pete Carroll's firing which led to Rich Kotitie and rock bottom. Had we won that game we MAY have made the playoffs or we might have missed by a game or 2 like we did in '93 but by hitting rock bottom it made Hess get parcells and turn this franchise around. That was the play that cost us the game, the clock meltdown was at the end of the game and it's blown out of proportion. We used the clock perfectly until we blew that TO. If we didn't waste that TO we could have taken 2 shots at the EZ instead of kicking . We had 1st and G from the 4 w/ all 3 TOs w/ :18 secs left. Then we ran the ball and had to waste a TO which turned into back to back TOs and ruined any chance we had. If we do not waste TOs we have plenty of time to get 2 more shots at the EZ and had we scored a TD it would have been the perfect drive b/c we wouldn't have left any time for Baltimore. They lost 2 heartbreakers in a row vs. Buf and at Chi BUt they did bounce back after the Chi loss. That was as bad a loss as you can get and it was on Monday Night but 6 days later they crushed Miami at home then beat Cle in Cle a week after that. You are right they lost tons of games where they had no business losing. I guess we should have know from his first game where they blew that lead at Cincy? 1990: -At Cincy: Up 20-10 in 4th, lose 25-20. -At Miami: up 16-13 in 4th, lose 20-26. -At Buffalo: Up 21-7 early, led 27-24 in 4th, lost 30-27. -At Indy: led 14-0 in 3rd qtr, lost 17-14(I think this was a Sun Night Game) -Vs. Indy: Led 14-3, lost 29-21. 1991: -Vs. Buf: led 20-16 in 4th, lost 23-20. -At Chi: Led 13-6 w/ the ball and running out clock, Thomas fumbles and Chi wins in OT 19-13. -Vs. Houston: Led 10-0, lost 23-20 -Vs. Indy: Led 14-0, lost 28-27, leahy missed a PAT that day and it was Indy's only win of the season. -Vs. NE: Lost 6-3, didn't blow a lead but NE stunk and we were figting to stay in playoff contention. Luckily Miami lost to SD or the next game would have been meaningless. 1992: at LA Rams: Led 10-0, lost 18-10. Vs. Buf: Scored TD to take 20-17 lead w/ under 2 mins left, watched Buf march down the field to score GW TD and lose 24-20.
KC Playoff 1970 I've been a jet fan sice 1967. First year, Joe Willie is 1st to throw for 4,000. Life is great, and so is being a Jets fan. !968, 17 point dogs to Colts, Jets win. Life is great and so is being a Jets fan. 1969, playoffs vs. Chiefs. Had to watch the game on closed circuit TV at Bishop Ford HS. Jets have a first and goal at the one. Four straight runs, and nothing. Jets lose. The Jets have been a cursed team ever since. I would change any one of those runs. JetD had the right game.
i think the brien fg (twice!) was probably the one play in recent memory. i think a lot of posters are forgetting that the next week, there was a huge snow storm in NE (i live here, so i remember) and though we'd have been playing NE in NE, it would have been a lot closer game simply because the conditions were so crazy. remember that we had a really good running game that year and i don't think there would have been much scoring since the winds were so crazy. that said, i'd go with a play i haven't seen mentioned. the backwards pass fumble against NE in the playoffs two years ago. sure, we probably don't win the SB, but i was at that game and people were starting to have doubts. it would have been nice to see them lose to us.
The Jets did have a 1st-and-goal at the 1. Bill Mathis carried the ball on 1st down. Matt Snell was stopped on 2nd down. Joe Namath threw incomplete to Snell on 3rd down. Jim Turner kicked a FG on 3rd down. It tied the score in the 4th quarter. Was there another goal line stand?
Curtis Martin to that damn lil flashlight from Hofstra for the game-winning TD as I stood on the sidelines for the Bucs screaming "Give me the Damn Ball!" Key.
As far as the one moment, it's simple. Drafting Marino over O'Brien would have changed the past 25 years of misery. I know it's supposed to be a play on the field, but that was one FO play for the books.
Cakes, you are probably right about the 3 pointer on fourth down. The thing that I remember is really being let down by not getting a touchdown with a first and goal from the one. I still think the franchise has been cursed since that game.
That's a good one. I always wondered how Marino would have done playing for Joe Walton in the windy Meadowlands with a decaying line, instead of for Shula, a great line and sun 12 months a year. He would have had Toon, Walker and Shuler plus a running game though, could have worked.
This is the worst of a long line of draft disasters. Blair Thomas, Kyle Brady over Sapp, D-rob over a host of players etc, etc, etc.
He did pretty well at Pitt, so I personally have no doubt that he would have flourished here. The thing that makes this draft decision so much worse than the others IMO is that they passed him up to take another QB, who played in Division II! This was a classic example of a front office thinking they were much smarter than they actually were, and outsmarting themselves in the process.
Ah are you saying that even up to the current our draft history is less then D-? You know at the moment that mighty Brick is on the borderline of being a bust @ #4 & then in the second round we ponied up to the plate again & picked KC after that great NYJ QB search & he to may turn out to be a bust which would mean our 1 & 2 from that draft were valueless to the team. I guess if that occurred somebodt should write a book oof how not to build a competive team
True. At the time they had just gone the the AFC Championship game with Todd, who was 29, so they were looking at O'Brien more as a future project. Still, Marino was there, if you're going QB you should take him. Of course most other teams passed on Marino too, including the Jets and four other teams who all drafted QBs, so we weren't alone in our folly.
Brick has started at LT every game of his career, that's hardly a bust and certainly not valueless. Also, we got Mangold in the first round that year too, who figures to be a solid center for a long time. Hard to label Clemens a bust either, the jury is still out on him. Then we got Leon Washington in the 4th round and Brad Smith later.
This year will tell the true story about Brick and Clemens needs at least a year with a decent line and healthy players to be evaluated. Mangold was also a great pick that year.
