nice article highlighting how the top college OT's ranked in PFF's sig stats for pass and run block efficiency. https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2015/04/13/cff-sig-stats-offensive-tackles/ should be noted that Peat was the only T in the country to rank in the top 10 for both pass and run blocking. his run blocking was actually very consistent. the more i watch him, the more i think starting at RT would be the best move for him. but for sure, he's an eventual LT. the best LT in this draft actually, which is why i believe he goes top 10.
that's correct. Peat would be an upgrade over Breno, who really struggled last season. and also correct, we don't have a backup LT on this team, and haven't for quite some time. we've gotten lucky with D'brick being an ironman. drafting Peat would solve both problems in the short term, while also setting us up with our LT of the future once Brick is done.
Which may be why Mac/Bowles are smarter than we are. Jeremiah said " if he is your left tackle of future, and would take him at 9, if you can't trade down, take him at 6, even if it not best value"
To be honest, I am not scout or talent eval or whatever, but I can't see Peat at RT at the next level - no way. Normally the right tackle should be good at run blocking. I think Peat lacks the core strength needed to be a great run blocker. Even though the guy is freaking massive. I don't want my RT getting thrown around like a rag doll, that's Wayne Hunter style. Breno is really the only other tackle we have. We have youth, but some of these guys just aren't guys you want starting 16 games a yr on your offensive line. None of them can play LT that is for sure. I just don't trust those PFF rankings completely. http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2015/04/offensive_tackle_andrus_peat_haunted_by_one_flaw_g.html IDK about this guy in the run game ... that's 2 games now I seen him be a liability in the run game.
If the Jets want to sit Peat down, it could work out. He can definitely be a true franchise LT, but like Brick that guy isn't good in the run game.
More and more teams are stacking pass rushers against the right tackle because they tend to be lesser pass blockers than their Left counterparts. Always attack a team at it's weakest point, not the strongest. Attacking a teams strongest pass blocker is like the Germans in WW II head on attacking the Maginot line instead of going through the Netherlands and Belgium.
do you really think Brick has struggled with run blocking in the NFL? even though Brick doesn't have that mauling style of play, it doesn't mean he wasn't good in the run game. He's more than held his own throughout his career. comparing a guy to Brick, and then suggesting we don't draft him makes no sense to me. Brick was one of the best picks we've made in last decade. I'd sign right up for that. with Peat, i also see some aspects of Brick, as well as Tyron Smith. he's not a mauler, but he was actually very solid in the run game in college. I'd agree with you he will need to add strength at the NFL level tho. sheer size will not dominate an opponent. unlike Brick and Smith, he doesn't need to bulk up. He's already got the size at 315lb. that size is extremely well distributed too, with a very thick lower body. At 6'7", and only 21 years old, he will grow further into that frame and add strength over the next couple years. All this talk is really about whether he can play RT, which is a good discussion. Of course, his best attribute to me though is those quick feet and first step to shadow a guy in pass pro. Here is a pretty balanced article discussing his strengths, and what he'll need to work on at next level. https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2015/04/21/cff-player-profile-andrus-peat-ot/
i'd sign up for Scherff too. no way at LT tho, he was very exposed in some of his tape in pass pro, and the competition is only faster now. i think he has pro bowl potential at G, and the possibility of RT. just have to decide, is the 6 overall too high for a position switch to interior lineman?
