The reason it favors the Colts is that it was produced by "NFL" Films and at the time the Colts and not the Jets were in the NFL. That was an embarrasing loss for the NFL. Just to give you another flavor for the game, the Jets had the ball for almost 13 minutes in the third quarter and most of the first half of the 4th quarter. The Colts ran 8 plays in the 3rd quarter and two were punts - two three and outs. the Colts had one first down and ran 16 plays in the second half until there was a little more than 6 minutes left in the game. Unitas then got the ball back and drove the Colts for their only score with 3 minutes left in the game. The Colts then recovered an onside kick and were stopped. The Jets held the ball for 36 minutes in the game. The Colts got most of their yards in the last 6 minutes of the game.
Hey, thanks for that. Some of us have seen the game a hundred times, but it's always cool to hear everything about it for those not around. I was only five at the time, and I've only seen the ENTIRE game about five times. NFL Films, er... Gotta love Matt Snell. One of my favorite Jets EVER. HolyJesusGod, I love that picture. I should brand it on my forehead.
Ordell Braase (not Bracey) Anyway, yeah one of the FGs was very short- only nine yards. Somewhere (1968 Jets America's Game program maybe) Namath said that Dave Herman should have been named the MVP.
I don't agree. In 1968, NFL Films filmed the AFL just like they did the NFL. NFL Films produced highlight films for all ten AFL teams that year. Their task was to present a 22-minute piece on Super Bowl 3. They took some liberty and made the game appear more exciting than it was by making a big deal out of Unitas coming off the bench. I have seen the film many times and I don't find it to be slanted to the extent you folks think it is. There are sideline shots of each team in the film. I don't see any bias. This is yet another "woe is me- I'm a Jets fan- everyone is against the Jets" deal. How do you explain the Super Bowl 4 film? The Chiefs represented the AFL in that Super Bowl and NFL Films miked their head coach.
Not totally correct, as Sabol himself said that the original highlight film was slanted toword the Colts mainly because, as I said before, Namath basically chased Sabol off the Jets sideline. Thats why he re-made an SB 3 highlight film a few years ago. Any Jet fan worth his salt should have that film in his collection - its great.
Do you have a link or something to corroborate that? NFL Films remaking a Super Bowl 3 highlight film seems outlandish to me and a waste of time.
^I taped it off ESPN a few years ago - I think its "Greatest Games - Super Bowl III". Check it out - its over an hour of highlights and interviews about the game. Tom Matte, Joe Willie, Johnny Sample and others speak about the game and its effects. They used to show it at Jetfest at Hofstra during training camp - that's where I saw it first. NFL films probably has it.
That's something different. You originally wrote that NFL Films remade a Super Bowl 3 highlight film as if to imply NFL Films' felt the one they made in 1969 was utter trash. There is a series of films under the title of "Greatest Games". They include Super Bowl 3, Super Bowl 32, Jets-Browns '86 Divisional Playoff Game, Cowboys-Falcons '80 Divisional Playoff Game, and Broncos-Browns '87 Divisional Playoff Game. I don't know how many there are in the series.
They have one for the 1958 NFL Championship Game and they just finished and aired one for the Sea of Hands.
In introducing the film on ESPN, Sabol specifically stated that he wanted to do SB 3 again for the reasons I stated. I don't have that part on the tape, but I remember him saying that to the host (Berman, I think).
Okay, now I know exactly what you meant. They didn't redo the SB3 film and trash the old one. But they had this new series called "Greatest Games" and Super Bowl 3 was a logical game to cover. NFL Films had more time to go more in depth.
