He's probably one of the few young QBs that can handle the media market/circus here. Playing at USC, you don't face much adversity or criticism so it'll be interesting to see how he reacts when he struggles early on. My gut tells me he's thick skinned, but more importantly, so confident in himself that negative criticism from the fans and media won't overly affect him.
To be honest the whole thought of the media affecting people here is overrated. Everyone whose ever been booed out of town has taken it professionally, and simply moved on. It isn't like these guys have nightmares about the NY media.
I wonder if the false rape charges thickened his skin... he faced tough media scrutiny for that. the kid can handle it... here's another angle - will his charisma turn the tide on reporters and lessen the criticism? Some people have that effect on others.
The best way to toughen Mark Sanchez up is for him to lose a game and be required to come on to ganggreen.com boards to see the sky is falling threads pile up ominously. He'll se what a sick and demented fanbase we can be at times. If that doesn't make him feel queasy nothing will
The Jets will not lose a game Sanchez is starting. GG will be all sunshine and flowers once Sanchez starts.
That's exactly what I meant to say *grin* Thanks for correcting me winston I truly believe it comes to pass. I can live with the odd loss. Need to be realistic here *chuckle*
Respectfully disagree. It doesn't matter if they've handled it professionally and moved on; when you're bombarded with constant scrutiny from a predominantly negative fan and media base, eventually it can take its toll. I'm not saying it affects everyone, but players - specifically QBs and Pitchers - face a tremendous amount of pressure here. And if they don't perform up to expectations, the media and maniacal nature of desperate (Jets and Mets, because they're the two teams starving for post-season success) fans can affect the players' psyches. This can happen any place, but it's different in NY because this isn't just any place.
I was thinking the same thing. Some personalities just can't deal with the intense scrutiny and daily overreaction by the NY media and fans. Hell, Ryan Leaf couldn't even handle the media "pressure" in San Diego.
"Drop the Guardita. Sanchez Destroys Buffalo's Defense." "Sanchez Refries The Beans, Beats Patriots 27-3." "Sanchez Applies The Hot Sauce: Miami 17, Jets 31." "Jets Take The Whole Enchilada - Destroy Colts 27-10."
I think he's going to be fine - at least I hope - he seems like a very mature and down to earth dude. Only time will tell.
