In fairness, Revis is at a completely different point in his career than Brady. And he's also not married to a woman who's worth more than any one player in the NFL. Brady will never have to worry about money, and his deal will likely be his last contract, whereas Revis is looking for his big payday. I always watch games while listening to the radio broadcast so I didn't catch the comment, but just reading it now, it doesn't seem as though it's "directed" at anyone in particular. If they'd said, "unlike some guy who plays football about 150 miles south on I-95" it would be different. I don't know how that comment could have been aimed at Revis specifically.
My gut feeling is that Revis will be out come the start of the season. If this is going to be the case, I think it will be hard to re-enter the season initially. Should we make the POs and face someone like the Colts again, and hes still holding out, then maybe he can name his price, but not until then. The one thing I'm glad about is the media black out, sick of reading endless quotes with nothing positive to say.
If Revis was just doing this to miss training camp i'd hate him a whole lot more... If you're that much of a diva that you just don't want to participate in a training camp when you're getting paid MILLIONS of dollars to do just that... Shows that hes just a money grubbing player who doesn't care about putting work in with his team. Hes all hollywood, branding himself with "revis island" to market himself in a big city like New York, collect his huge contract and then think hes above training camp.
I wouldn't disagree that 16 mil is unreasonable. It's probably three, maybe four million higher than what I would've expected. But that makes 'honoring his contract' about eleven million dollars from fair. It's also worth noting that for all that we focus on his demand to be paid more than Asomugha, Nnamdi isn't even the highest paid defensive player in the league. That honor goes to Julius Peppers, 16.7 mil a year. So it's tough to argue that 'fair market value' for a guy who's widely considered the league's best defensive player, not to mention was the focal point last year of the league's best defense, would be much lower. Ultimately, I think something will get done before the season starts, because I think both sides have to realize that Revis sitting out the season amounts to suicide for both parties. At some point, Tannenbaum needs to just offer Revis ten million dollars in a suitcase to come back for 2010 and see if both sides can't happily put his contract aside for another year.
Not to be nitpicky, but Peppers signed for $15.25 million a year. The 16.7 million was his franchise tender. That's barely more than Nnamdi. As far as Revis, if the average value over his contract thus far has been $5 million per season, it's $7 million away from fair. As has been pointed out numerous times, the $1 million doesn't represent his earnings accurately.
If he figured out a way out of training camp, gets himself a new contract and plays at something at least close to last year then I say more power to him. Is it fair? No, but what is fair in the world? If he comes back and shits the bed this year he can go straight to hell for all of this but I don't see that happening.
Yes, but football contracts are often written in ways that pay more in one season and much less in another. Are the down years always open to renegotiation because they don't adequately reflect the player's value in the down year? I totally agree that Revis is under-compensated, however there are mechanisms to fix that, including bargaining in good faith with the Jets by recognizing that the 3 years they have him under contract for are a real factor in the negotiations and not something that he can just breeze past as if it doesn't exist.
I think you missed my point. I was saying that it was unfair to use that $1 million mark as a measure of his earnings this season. Your first paragraph just agreed with me.
Mevi$has outplayed his contract. He has not paid his dues to get to that next pay level.(FA). That's the point that keeps getting glossed over. Players that reach that huge payday do two things. Outplay their rookie deal. Play long enough to GET to FA. Mevi$ only wants to do half the work, he should settle for half the money.
