    *theory*

I think Cousins has been Mac’s guy from the getgo. He reportedly tried to trade for him in year 1 after Geno got, um, injured. This past offseason it seemed like he virtually had no plan at QB: he waited until a week into free agency to sign a stopgap journeyman and he didn’t draft a guy. Could it be because he was waiting out the Cousins saga with Washington? If not, it was an atrociously uncoordinated offseason.

Now, he’s conspicuously cleared a world of cap space going into an offseason where the Redskins can’t feasibly franchise tag Cousins again. I can see Mac making a heavy push to try and sign him.

lmao Rudolph, lmao @ Cousins doing nothing this year. Is there anything legit you post around here?

Stripped Cousins of all of the weapons
#1 receiver didn't show up this year
    #1 TE injured all year
    Top draft pick on IR
Majority of the offensive line injured.

Yet, he STILL will put up around 65%, 4k yards, 27-30 TD's and 10 INT's. Fans like yourself would sign up for this shit in a NY Minute. It's amazing how uniformed some fans are.

    2016, 67% 4900 yards, 25 TD's, 12 INT's
    2015, 70% 4100 yards, 29 TD's, 11 INT's

Jet fans better sign up for that consistency, shit.

I'm getting more nervous about Rosen myself, hell he might drop. I think Rosen wants to as well.

If Cousins is available and shows a willingness to come to the Jets, sign me up for Kirk as QB1 of the NYJ. He would be the best QB we've had in a long time, and still has a longish future as a QB.

Unless the Jets install a structure that understands how critical offense is to winning, whoever they draft as QB wont make the difference.

I want to believe that they can Rosen, or if not, that one of the other QBs can elevate this team, but I don't trust Macc to know which QB to take, and even if he does take the "right" one, I don't trust Bowles and his CS to develop him and build a system around him.

Let me ask this: What did Bellichick do? And do you see Macc and/or Bowles doing this? I don't.

Yea after thinking about my last post for a few minutes I think I’m all in on making Cousins the highest paid QB in the NFL.

We have the cap space for it, and he can give us at least 5-6 good years, which is long enough to be considered a “long term option”. He’s consistently proven that he’s no worse than a top 15 starter and he’s younger than most of the QBs on competitive teams (Brady, Ben, Smith, Rivers, Brees, Ryan, Flacco... on par with Luck, Stafford, Wilson and Newton).

He’s probably our best option for both the short and long term. It would allow us to use the top 10 pick and 2 2nd’s on a supporting cast instead of trading up. Cousins can do some damage with Enunwa and Anderson if we can keep him upright.

I don't have anything against Cousins, but he has been a 16 game starter for 3 seasons and yes he has good numbers, but he's going to be 30 years old, do the jets want to invest 75 million dollars on a 30 year old QB?

Has he elevated the players around him like you would expect from a $25 million dollar a year QB?

I guess we can look at it from a Drew Bree's like situation but Bree's was head and shoulders above Kirk when he signed with the Saints.

Why haven't the redskins given him the monster contract that he's looking for?

there has to be some reason they have balked at giving him that type of money.

It could be they are just dumb but historically they have been a good organization and good to their players.

If this was Mac's plan all along, then I hope he gets fired immediately!

Spot on. I'm really gobsmacked that so many posters here think signing Cousins is the way to go. I think the very idea is nuts. If the Jets sign him, it will be at least 7-10 years before they draft a FQB prospect, and probably at least another 10- 15 years before they even get close to sniffing a SB.

After seeing the returns on Petty and Hackenberg, I don’t trust Maccagnan to draft a QB and I don’t trust Bowles to develop one. Since both of their jobs are most likely safe, the best course to success seems to be paying for a proven vet QB and letting Morton tailor around him. If he can put together a respectable offense with McCown, I’d imagine he can present a formidable attack with Cousins.

It sucks to have to play around your GM’s QB blindness, but that’s where we’re stuck. Options like Cousins rarely hit the open market.

Also Leveon Bell grew up a die hard Jets fan and is an UFA. Let’s have some fun with this money.

This is the only reason why I would consider trying to sign Cousins. It's not what I prefer, but if they retain Macc and Bowles it may be the Jets best bet.

But the thing is by signing Cousins, the Jets are pretty much stuck with him as the starter for the length of the contract. There will be zero point in drafting a QB high. The rebuild for all intents and purposes will be over. Woody and Chris Johnson will go back to expecting the team to make the playoffs, and then if the team doesn't, both Mac and Bowles could be fired following next season, and then the next GM and HC are stuck with a QB in Cousins that won't get them to a SB, and that would probably keep any good candidates from applying for the job.

I agree with you regarding not trusting Bowles to develop a young QB. That's why imo he must go. Arians will be available. The Jets should kick Bowles to the curb now and go after Arians.

I can somewhat understand your lack of faith in Mac's drafting a QB, but not totally. Petty was a 4th round pick and was a good value. While Hack was overdrafted, he's still young and has a lot of talent. Still, I can understand having some doubts about Mac, but until he swings and misses on a 1st round QB, I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt. Now if he has a chance to draft a QB in the 1st round like he did last year with Mahomes and Watson, and passes, then I say hang him by the balls from one goalpost in Jet Life Stadium.

I don’t think Arians would take Todd Bowles’ job, they are extremely close friends. He’ll have plenty of options if he wants them, with 10+ teams needing coaches and him being a 2 time COTY.

If Maccagnan doesn’t try to put his stamp on this team with a highly selected QB in this draft he can go somewhere else. Eventually you need to show some conviction and tie your name to a quarterback. If he goes 4 drafts with Hackenberg being his highest selected one he can get fired in May for all I care.

And if he tries to pick Allen he can get fired before the card even reaches the podium.

I’m of the same mindset lately only because this coaching staff cannot develop a QB.

Get Cousins and draft a pass rusher or OL with pick 1.

I still prefer Rosen though. Kid has a brain and will succeed in any offense.

Allen looks like the genetically enhanced baby of his 2 prior drafted QBs. I don't see how the guy who drafted Petty and Hack would pass when needing and under immense pressure to draft a QB.

You get perhaps 7 very good years with Cousins at the helm. I'll take a shot at that. He has elevated the players around him, but that team has been decimated by injuries and bad transactions. It would be very similar to the Brees situation.

The Redskins are an inept organization and tried low-balling Kirk Cousins, not a good look. They are historically stupid. Albert Haynesworth? Jets shouldn't strive to be anything like the Skins. Get Cousins, sure up the line and get some depth on this team.

I know they haven't handled everything with aplomb but that's not the history of that organization, they signed Portis and tried to build around him they just did not have the QB at the time.

When you say lowball him, what is it exactly that we are talking about? maybe they see a good QB, not one that can command $25 million a year.

A HOF QB gets that kind of money and I don't believe Cousins is a HOF QB.

I would balk at that figure myself, I'm not saying he can't tear it up for the next 7 years and become a SB winning HOF QB but I do understand why they don't want to fork over that type of money.
