Goodell said the Pats tried to gain an unfair advantage by taking away a first round pick. And he specifically told teams not to do that before the season. That's pretty black and white. Teams try to get an 'unfair' advantage any way they can and Belichick is just really good at it; and he's also the king of injury report manipulation. I don't find what he does surprising or offensive, but 'spygate' was a clearly worse .. plus Mangini and Brett aren't even Jets anymore.
Goodell looked at the tapes. The tapes were shown on t.v. which showed the camera panning to the scoreboard and to the sidelines. Goodell said there was nothing on there that would show that the Patriots were cheating. They broke a rule and paid the price for it. Were they trying to gain an advantage? I suppose so, but how about if a team has 12 men on the field. Is that cheating or is that breaking a rule? I'm confident you know the answer to that.

Assuming the Pats will come out with the hurry-up offense, I'm not sure if blitzing Brady is the right thing to do. Brady has a quick release, the Pats line is expecting the blitz, we'll wear out our defense in the first half and -- most of all -- it's never worked in the past for the Jets. Brady will throw quick, short passes to the sidelines at the marker. Maybe the Jets' D should hang onto the receivers and try to make the TO happen themselves. Just going against conventional wisdom.

Goodell destroyed the tapes before anyone could get a look at them. He had no impetus to do so unless there was damning evidence on there that would call into question the integrity of the league. It was the right thing to do for the good of the NFL, but 99% of the football watching population outside of New England was assured of the truth that day.
