The MLB still has to hold up at the point of attack. The SLB takes on most of the lead blockers, but the MLB has to take on whoever is next and make the play. It is important for the MLB to have sideline to sideline speed, which Lee has, but he needs to have great instincts and the ability to fight through blocks. Lee last year and in college was terrible at freeing himself up once he was engaged by a blocker. In a basic 4-3 defense, the MLB is in charge of the play-side "A" gap, while a WLB is in charge of the backside "B" gap. The WLB has to deal with less lead blockers than a MLB has to. The WLB is free to shoot gaps and take away cut back lanes.
This very well may be the front office's so called plan. lets be a bit frugal this year and next while accumulating draft picks and trying like hell to find a QB. then garnish the nucleus of younger players in '19 and '20 and let it roll.
So you clearly weren't around when vilma was here? there is no "in charge of gap" it's a play by play basis. the Dline job is to take on the o-lineman and let the MLB roam free, up the middle worse case is a possible FB, to the outside it'll be a TE who gets taken on by the OLB allowing the MLB to slice in for the tackle. Obviously every play is different but in general the 4-3 MLB is a sideline to sideline tackler who isn't taking on blockers directly too often. where a 3-4 ILB is, one usually takes on blockers while the other makes plays. it's what scott did for lewis in balt. here i stole this from Wikipedia because I didn't feel like explaining it again in my own words Middle linebacker There is only one inside linebacker in the 4–3 scheme, so he is called the middle linebacker (MLB), sometimes known as the “Mike” linebacker. He must be as smart as he is athletic, acts as the “quarterback of the defense” and is often the defensive leader.[10] The primary responsibility of the “Mike” is to stop the run, though he will often be asked to fall back in zone coverage in pass protection; man to man pass coverage has him assigned to the fullback typically. The MLB is often the largest and strongest of all of the linebackers. The 4–3 defense relies on having a sure tackler at the middle linebacker spot. Most notably, Monte Kiffin's “Tampa Cover 2” scheme makes high demands on the MLB, requiring him to have above-average speed, and additional skills to be able to read the play and either maintain his central position to help the outside linebackers cover short passes, drop behind the linebackers in coverage and protect the zone of the field behind the outside linebackers from 11–20 yards out, or run up to the line of scrimmage to help assist in stopping the runs. Luke Kuechly is a prototypical "Mike" linebacker. Outside linebackers As in the 3–4 defense there are two outside linebackers in the 4–3. These outside backers are known as the strong-side and weak-side linebackers. The strong-side, or “Sam” linebacker, is so named because he typically sticks to the strong side of the defense, across from the tight end. The “Sam” does his fair share of blitzing, however he also needs to play the run and take on blockers, making him a bigger linebacker on average than the weak-side linebacker. He will usually be relied upon to cover the tight end or potentially a back out of the backfield.[12] Anthony Barr is a prototypical "Sam" linebacker. The weak-side, or “Will” linebacker, will generally play on the weak side and has more freedom than the other LBs, often blitzing the quarterback or guarding against the screen. He also has heavy coverage responsibilities, making a good number of today's Will linebackers former safeties.[13] Lavonte David is a prototypical "Will" linebacker. So what sounds more to suit lee? the Sam backer needs to be bigger (not lee) and take on blocks. The Will backer needs to be good in coverage (lee was terrible in this last year) or the Mike backer (which needs to be fast, protect the middle zone, and shoot the gaps on run plays)
I was a Jet fan when Vilma was on the team. When I said a LB was in charge of a certain gap, I was talking about their assignment in a basic 4-3 front. Based on their alignment, the MLB has to cover the strongside "A" gap and needs to be able to fight off blocks from the center since without stunts, he has a free release to the MLB in zone schemes. Lee was terrible in coverage last year, but I believe the Jets would be gashed on the ground if Lee was the starting MLB. He has the speed to make plays sideline to sideline, but he lacks the ability to fight through blocks. In zone schemes, the center gets to release to the MLB, unless the defense stunts causing a defender to cross his face. In power schemes, the center and backside guard can either double the 1 technique or chip block up to the MLB. If they double team, the offense would use a FB to isolate the MLB. In either scenario the MLB needs to be able to hold up at the point of attack, or the defense will be gashed.
We only have 33m in cap space because we are carrying 13m in dead money and have a piece of shit gm that makes idzik look like a genius.
there is always a hat on a hat. No lineman will be getting a free run at lee in a 4-3 base unless the d-line screwed up or we had a bad playcall. look at keuchly who is the best MLB in the NFL, very rare he has to shed a block to make a play. putting him as the Sam as you suggest limits him to covering much less of the field and puts him in blitzing situations (where he'll have to shed blocks) and coverage situations, basically negative his talents. Doesn't matter what you believe, but putting lee at WLB is as bad of a move as it was putting pryor at FS. the SLB is there to take on blocks in those situations. same way bart scott did it for years so ray lewis could be a star. between ngata and scott, lewis was free to roam and barely had to shed blocks. thats the type of system that benefits lee
Well anybody with eyes knows that's not how he plays.. he's a run support/box safety... he played that last year and he was very valuable to our defense... then in 2016 he was forced to play a lot of deep coverage which again is not his thing.. we knew this coming out of college.
im not saying he cant play in this league , what im saying is that hooker and Adams will be better players then him i believe so there is no reason to not select a safety because we have him he is one dimensional and hits like a truck but a safety job is way more then that.
or we can take a flyer on byrd and hope he stays healthy. have pryor play in the box like he is meant for and let byrd roam around the field which he is one of the best at when healthy.
We actually don't even have 30 Mil in cap space -> "At last check, overthecap.com's estimate had them at $30.202 million in cap space . That counted two restricted free agent tenders of $2.746 million apiece -- cornerback Marcus Williams and center Wesley Johnson . Here are the known cap hits the Jets have added since: LS Tanner Purdum : $980,000 OLB Corey Lemonier: $695,000 OLB Josh Martin : $1.775 million LT Kelvin Beachum : $5 million The cap hits for left tackle Ben Ijalana (two-year deal worth $11 million maximum) and kickerChandler Catanzaro aren't yet known. Let's just put down Ijalana for $5.5 million, as a rough estimate, in the meantime. Given those five contracts -- with Catanzaro's details still to come -- the Jets are down to $16.072 million in available cap space. Remember, too, the Jets need to pay their draft picks, which will cost them $8.005 million, with their current allotment of picks. That drops them to $8.067 million in cap space. Again, this doesn't include the Catanzaro contract. And the Ijalana cap hit is an estimate." Per amp nj com.
we could still make moves to free up space as well. harris is 6.5 mil to release him, richardson is another 8 mil OTC has us at 24mil including beachum, lemonier, martin, so minus 5.5 for ben, puts us at 18.5 chandler cna't be more then 3 if that much so 15.5 so yeah 8 sounds about right. enough for 1 good FA or 2 decent ones, if we don't make any cap saving moves. I think we could grab patterson, gordon, and byrd all pretty cheap. patterson would add depth at WR but mostly be a huge boost to our special teams gordon is a behavior risk, but if he can behave is a top 10 WR in the NFL talent wise byrd is an injury risk, but when healthy he is a top FS in the game. if all 3 blow up in our face, who cares we are gonna suck anyway. if not we could have some great value. plus the deals would be cap friendly for next year.
My gut tells me we didn't give the kicker more than 1 mil on the cap ... why cut Folk and sign a kicker worse than him for the same amount of cap ... so take 24 mil minus 6 for Ijalana and the kicker that leaves us with 18 ... once Sheldon is traded we will be up at 27 mil ... if we sign Hightower then we will cut Harris to offset 6.5 of his salary so there's that
I didn't see you mention Decker or Gilcrest .. if we are purging and banking then we need to go all out. Devin Smith will also be returning. I'm wondering if Richardson will be a draft day bargaining piece. Either way we need at least a 3rd rounder for him this year and the cap space.
they can both go as well. I'd drop ghilcrest if we can bring in byrd for sure. decker i think should stay though. we need 1 veteran WR at least to help the young ones. a guy like decker could help out enunwa, anderson, peake etc and even gorden if we go after him. If gordon pans out and anderson and peake develop we could drop decker next year.
As per overthecap.com, we have 72 players under contract with ~24.2M cap space. As per NFLPA official report, we have 73 players under contract with ~27.2M cap space.
yes they should work for free. i really cant fucking stand posters like you whining because guys make money. the nfl doesnt give a shit about them once they arent any good, maybe you should give back some of your salary so your company can hire better young people. fuck out of here with that bs.
In my profession they hire young people all the time...better is a matter of opinion Sure lets just hire NFL players to rip us off for millions who cares? Its not Alley Cats money No they should not work for free ...In my post I was speaking to someone who wanted to know where the $ has gone Some players are honestly worth their salaries and some aren't imo,,,"no one cares once they aren't any good?" The same could be said about Drs Lawyers and Accountants And your point is.......?????
