Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too early to be critical of this pick. While Brick does get help from a back behind him, the dude has a bottomline that can't be argued with. He's gone up against some insane pass rushers, and held his own. He's looking like the sound pick. And he'll only get better with experience.
Yes... He did get embarrased a couple of times. But its part of the learning curve. Personally, i've been more impressed by Mangold, but i think d'brick is going to be a very solid pick. i think are talent at running back is thin, and that might make him look worse. But hes LEARNING. its all about technique, and he'll get better, and better.
All you guys complaining about him do realize that LT is one of the hardest positions to learn in the NFL, right? It was his 6th game, he had a bad gave. It happens.
Not exactly....D'Brick is a solid tackle pick, but one of many that comes along every 2-4 years....not in the mode of an Ogden or a Munoz....a fine prospect, yes, but look at Gallery's struggles. Keys to grading an Offensive Lineman: (1) Sacks Allowed -- D'Brick doing OK here. (2) Penalties Taken -- Doing OK here, not too many holding penalties. (3) Pressures Allowed -- a bit of a slipup here, but Chad has not been whacked game after game.
People tend to put on a bit more weight the older they get, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him around 305-310. I don't think he will ever get to 330 though, but I don't know how necessary that will be anyway.
True, but we knew this going in so you can't kill him for it. And I agree with the others that we have to see how good he is in 2-3 years. Look, it could be alot worse: Robert Gallery, taken #2 overall (D'Brick was #4), has been closer to a BUST than matching D'Brick's performance. And Gallery was an outside shot for #1 overall pick in 2004 !! Orlando Pace (who we should have had) was also rated higher, and he also struggled his first few years. D'Brick reminds me of Marvin Powell, one of our 2 'bookends' of the late 1970's taken by Walt Michaels. Conversely, Chris Ward was the dominant run blocker. Powell was 6-5 and 270 (not small, but he was lean) whereas Ward was 6'-3" & 300 pounds at a time when only a few guys weighed that much in the NFL.
I'd question Taylor's "sack". It was for 0 yards - to me that's a tackle for no gain. Now I'm only reading the stats, but perhaps one of you guys who saw the play can clarify?
If you actually watched the first half of that game, Pennington didn't throw a pass more than 3 yards down field. The entire 11 man Miami D was defending the line of scrimage to 5 yards back. It wasn't an 8 man box we were facing, it was an 11 man box. The WR screens the 4 yard passes on third and 6 the entire O in the first half was essentially the football verssion of the Rope-A-Dope. Maybe that's why the play action worked in the second half? What it really comes down to is we take D'Brick or we trade down and take Cutler or we draft Vernon Davis instead of D'Brick. Apparently the team likes Baker and he has been performing, Chad has played okay so really with a backup signed there was no need to trade down to take Cutler. D'Brick has looked very solid to me under the pressure of a stacked line. I'm very happy with this pick.
Pennington could not find an open receiver and decided to run with the ball. Had he gained another yard it would have been recorded as a rush for 1 yard. As it was, it gets recorded as a sack of 0 yards.
D'Brick is a horrible bust. He should be traded with Mangold after the season and we should use all our picks on the offensive line again. Will that make everyone happy. Give it time. I don't worry about him at all relative to our D, who totally put my stomach in knots.
Are you guys grading him out every play? Best i can tell -- he has been very very good. He doesnt give up sacks -- makes few errors. Until someone says on TV that he is great -- you wont believe it I guess? This was the absolute right pick.
Good Find- Albeit it on a screen, and he still was in midst of being manhandled. I'm as big a jets fan as anyone on this board. I just am not as optimistic. I think he's a good kid and has solid work ethic Watch the Miami gm on tape and you will feel the same way. Nothing positive. Poor positioning, poor leverage, and no strength. Extremely ackward angles resulting in ackward falls to his right and left. What do I expect? I expect him deter Jason Taylor from doing anything and everything he wanted, for a play here and a play there. But not only Taylor, but LB's and CB'c also. He didn't lock up a single rusher all gm. To me that's scary. Not to mention now we don't even expect him to run block! We picked him number 4 overall. I happen to have given him a C. Whoever gave him an A, simply has not watched the film.
He has been doing a good job in pass protection, sacks have been kept to a minimum this year. Washington was getting good yardage running the ball yesterday too. People are expecting him to play like a seasoned vet 6 games into his career. At this point I'm still pleased with the pick.
My concern with D'Brick is that I have seen a few plays were he get pushed back like he's on skates. I don't think that happend much to Pace or Ogden in their first year. I hope he can bulk up if the off season. You tell me he had no weight training program at Virgina? I questioned a guy that gets picked 4th and needs to get bigger and stronger.
Brick is making rookie mistakes, LT is the hardest position for a rookie to play in the league besides QB. He needs some weight on seriously, I wont start worrying until next year if he hasnt gained weight and his run blocking is still shoddy. then folks, its time to worry. until then hes not horrible considering Penny is still standing and the Defensive fronts hes seen up to this point
I never wanted D'Brick in the first place. I seen him play enough college games to know the second we drafted him, our runnung game would be a disaster on the left side. If anyone remembers, I was all for trading down and getting the true best complete LT in the draft(I'm talking about pass protection and run blocking) which is apparently Marcus McNeil the rookie LT of the San Diego Chargers.
