If the team is in a contending window and wants to keep a player, they’ll find a way to restructure and push GTD money down the road or something.

    The cap is a myth.

I mean i'm not in his head but typically Gms think 2-3 years out. I'm sure he has an idea of FAs and who he wants to resign this offseason already

Im sure he does. I wonder for how many years per contract signing? Suppose mosely. If he wants him, howmany years are negotiated? I just throw that out as an example. Or an extension fir Q. Some people think the salary cap hasno meaning, but why didnt teams sign some terrific receivers and not let them leave? Sure there are machinations but the cap must bite at some point

mosley was already restructured so he's in the plans for next year. i'm sure he's looking at a Q extension already

Yup re mosley. I choose a poor example there. thanks for pointing out. But mosley does present the kind of considerations JD faces in upcoming years, as cutting him before/after certain dates has varying cap hits, assuming he still has a high playing level. I spent a good deal of my professional career dealing with team building. I would love many of the players to stay with the team as long as they contribute. Team cohesiveness is often overlooked by many, but it does contribute to team performance. I don't want to equate combat units in the military to a football team, but you get the idea.
So again, i wonder about JD's vision into the future. Does he see a way to keep these guys together when salary issues become prevalent?

we won't keep them all. it's part of the cap. but he'll keep the ones he feels are harder to replace. he's not looking at 4 years form now though it's typically a 2-3 year window

I wasn't his biggest fan coming into this season but as we've seen you can end up in kicker hell letting a solid one walk out the door

Unfortunately I can see Gardner being like Revis, commanding a huge pay day, the type of season Williams is having, he will cost big money as well, let's hope this team can continue to keep climbing fast and potentially make it to the big show, before those decisions have to be made

If I'm Joe Douglas and I need to slash some salary off the cap I'm cutting two big names....

George Fant- with the surprising early rise of Max Mitchell I think that makes Fant especially when you consider he wasn't very good at RT and I'm sure that's where he projects to be. There's still good, solid play from Duane Brown.

CJ Mosley- The Jets have surpassed the poison pill of cutting Mosley. Now they can cut him with almost no dead money. Cut him and hope the Jets can resign him later at a lesser amount.

That's a good start toward freeing up extra cap space.....

Make no mistake though with the impressive talent factory Joe Douglas is building here the name of the game has changed.

Now, the Jets are going to run into problems where they can't sign all of their most talented players. They're going to have to let players walk in which case JD already has a guy drafted behind him that he's confident can take over with almost no disruption in quality of play. When JD can demonstrate that? That's when you know you have a quality GM. That's exactly the kind of system JD is building.
