The Steelers basically go to sleep during FA. Not bashing us for spending because I actually like these signings plus our coaching staff, but overall I'm not a fan of FA.
Desperate is such a stupid word to hang on the signings that the Jets have made this offseason. The guys who have been signed thus far have filled some of the biggest holes on the team. Getting Faneca at the price we did was worth it if you ask me. Would you want a guy that is considered second tier at his position, or a guy widely thought of to be the best at his position...Especially a great run blocking guard. Our running game suffered last year and it wasnt because of who was lining up behind the OL, it was the OL itself. On the defensive side, the Jets have signed guys that will help to make the 3-4 style of defense we play considerably better, or at the very least, they should. We all know that this 3-4 defense can work...We witnessed the blueprint for it do some sick and fantastic things. The only area where the word desperate could truely describe anything related to the NYJ would be the fans and wanting a Super Bowl. I know I'm desperate to see them in one and win it. So far, the moves have been calculated, swift, and filling needs. You can't ask for more from the FO of your team.
"these moves smack of desperation by a coaching staff and a front office that fear a rash of pink slips if the green and white don't win a lot of games in 2008." This statement by Florio's "source" is most ridiculous. Do you think the guy that signed the bonus checks, Woody Johnson, would pull the plug after one season? He just spent a bunch of money to retool and acquire players that fit the defensive system and is watching the FO trade one (possibly two) players that didn't. If he fires them, he knows he's going to be writing checks again in a season. Mangini and Tannenbaum will here at least two more seasons. These were deperate moves to improve the football team, not protect their jobs. Furthermore, both guys wouldn't be out of jobs long at all. As long as Parcells is running things in Miami, he'll have a spot for Tannenbaum. And Mangini has done enough to warrant a coordinator's job on some staff, just not New England.
The desperation term comes from how much they spent on the guys they got. Not that they signed them to begin with. It's really hard to justify what they paid Faneca and Pace. The fact that no other team was willing to pay that makes the appearance at least seem desperate. That and the fact the Giants and Patriots played in the superbowl just adds to that thought.
Suddenly leaving the long term plan of building through the draft (like Colts, Steelers and pre-* Patriots) and entering the path of Redskins looks a bit desperate to me. I do believe signings of Faneca and Jenkins were necessary. Faneca because he going to play between D'Brick and Mangold and can be a mentor to them, and Jenkins because NTs are so important and yet so rare. I am however not sure it was necessary sure it was to sign a RT and a OLB. The draft is rich on both those positions this year.
They better be desperate. We were 4-12 but even more the reason that the clueless press does not get is the PSL's. I am telling you, the jets know they better have a good season before they spring it on us, especially after the jints super bowl. 4-12 again and they will lose their tic holders
All I'm gonna say is if the Redskins signed all these guys.. everyone on this board would be saying "OMG, they are going to be in CAP HELL" and "OMG the Dan Snyder way NEVER WORKS!!"
