He's not really all that good of a coach, if theres a tom coughlin or a jeff fisher available it'd be wise to go with them. The Raiders simply just had an average 8-8 year simply by beating their divisional opponents. The AFC West is the weakest its been in years. So you also wanna look at that 2-8 record against the rest of the NFL.
because Al Davis think every team he fields is good enough to win the Super Bowl and if they don't it must be the fault of the Head Coach
Simply, their worst decision was getting rid of Gruden. They've been screwed with mediocre coaches since. Aside from Lane Kiffin, he actually knew what he was doing but Al Davis made it hard for him by going with Jamarcus Russell instead of the guy kiffin wanted in Adrian Peterson.
Lane Kiffin has never shown to know what he is doing. The guy was bad in Oakland, and barely above average at Tennessee and USC. Lane Kiffin has accomplished absolutely zero to indicate he is any better than his accomplishments indicate. the only reason people claim he was any good because doing so makes Al Davis look idiotic. sorry, that simply is a flawed position on the matter. Lane Kiffin sucked as an NFL coach and Al Davis wasn't crazy to get rid of him.
Maybe it has something to do with Cable beating his wife and breaking an assistant coach's jaw. If you're that much of a pain in the ass, you have to do better than 8-8 to justify keeping you around.
wouldnt that all have been reason to fire him last year? instead they wait a year to do so? makes no sense to use that argument
Last offseason Cable still had one more year left on his contract; Davis probably didn't really want to keep him, but also didn't want to be paying 3 coaches at once.
This thread has me thinking: How can the Bengals THINK of retaining Marvin Lewis after only 2 winning seasons in 8 years?!
The coach doesn't matter in Cincy. The owner is also the GM. A GM who always wants players on the cheap. More importantly, he keeps the scouting department so understaffed that it's been a league-wide joke for years.
Lane Kiffin in 07 actually brought back their running game and actually had the Raiders in almost every game that year despite having 4 different quarterbacks that year who couldnt contribute worth a hell. That 07 Raider offense was probably the most talentless i'd seen an offense in a long ass time. Their starting QB's Mccown and Culpepper are in the UFL now, Jamarcus Russell is a free agent and Andrew Walter quit football. Fargas their RB is a free agent at only age 30 and none of their recievers that year are on any football teams anymore. Even Belichick would say "What the hell am I supposed to do with this team?"
Sounds insane, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Josh McDaniels get interviewed. He fits the profile of an Al Davis head coaching hire - young, offensive minded, new(ish) to head coaching. Plus, he comes with the added bonus of being a punk who can help Al tweak Pat Bowlen's nose in subtle ways. It wouldn't surprise me, is all.
Somewhere, Art Shell is watching his telephone patiently waiting for Al Davis' call. Don't make the same mistake Art.
To me it would be a horrible fit for McDaniels. There is nothing worse than a meddeling owner for a guy with as big of an ego as McD. One thing I'm alsmot sure of is that the raiders are going to have to dig real low to find a guy that will put of with Undead Al.
