Well depending on the type of 4-3, we would have to pick between Gholston, Pace and Thomas for the RDE spot, unless we decided to run more of a penetrating 4-3 with Ellis at DT and Jenkins still at the nose and 2 smaller DEs, in which case the third would be rotational, with Coleman coming in on running downs. The big question would be our linebacking corps - In the 4-3 you have faster linebackers than the 3-4. Even for a 3-4 our linebackers are fairly slow, with Harris fitting the mold of LOLB (strong side) we don't have a MLB or ROLB, unless we're doing a Hawk technique on the MLB (not seen often in the pros - ) with a big run stopping MLB and smaller, penetrating DTs (which doesn't fit our personnel). For an example, think U of Illinois. Think Brit Miller, being one of the top 5 tacklers and top 15 tacklers for a loss in the country. That's the Hawk technique. One real gap responsibility with the read being on the guard and a primary job of stopping the mofo'ing inside run. If we ran a 4-3, the Hawk technique would be the only way (that I can think of, anyway) Harris could play the middle. Sutton was a really good linebackers coach when we ran the 4-3 and probably knows this, but then again, he has our big run stopping pass rushing OLBs in coverage all of the time, so I wouldn't expect him to consider this if we were to switch to a 4-3.
We waited three years to get the correct personnel for the 3-4, and the second we do, we're going back to the 4-3?
Ridiculous. Everyone's going to focus on today, but until we faced Marshawn Lynch we had a phenomenal run defense. As everyone has noted, the pass defense would improve dramatically with better playcalling; I resisted this notion until today's game, when we never blitzed when we should have. The 3-4's the way to go.
I have to agree with you. Plus, it may give us an opportunity to salvage Gholston as a serviceable player, which would be big. Let's face it, we got our 3-4 NT, we got all the pieces we needed, and it still isn't working. I don't think our schemes are creative enough to take advantage of the #1 positive of the 3-4 (not letting the OL know where the 4th rusher is coming from)- and with Jenkins wearing down/playing hurt, our effectiveness is really hindered. Everyone we have can play in a 4-3, and there are a handful of guys who may excel in it. Why not?
Its all a smokescreen. Sutton and Mangini are saving all their blitzes until week 17 just to fuck Chad's world up. Seriously though I want to kick Bob in the neck
guys i know Sutton isnt the best, but its hard to get pressure when none of your rushers can get off a block. The annoucner even said it that the guys looked like they had velcro attached to thier jerseys
What is with this thing for wanting to completely overhaul everything on this team if it's not perfect? Seriously...how many people herre even have an idea of what they want this team to look like? All ANYONE can here can say is "I want a good Jets team." Unfortunately, that seems to mean 19-0 with no close games or everything sucks. Fucking...warped.
No offense but i really wish i knew where you lived so i could take your computer shit on it flush it down the toilet then use your keyboard as toilet paper and your mouse as a plunger if i need it. These talks have been ended for the longest time and you need to bring this shit up again?? Are you Fuckign serious. If you dont like the 3-4 Become a jags saints vikings or panthers fan. As long as we have mangini and tannenbaum we are a 3-4 defense. So dont waste your breath. The 3-4 defense is the better defense anyway it confuses the offensive line into not knowing where the rush is coming from, albeit we just dont have a strong pass rusher yet or a good dc. either way if we switch to a 4-3 we still wont have a good pass rusher. Steelers #1 defense 3-4 Ravens #1 defense 3-4 Dolphins defense top in lg hmmm 3- You lose a pass rusher or a key dlineman you fall apart Last year patriots top defense... 3-4 Last year Chargers top defense... 3-4 lost merriman this year and shit fell apart we were a top 5 defense when jenkins was playing well.... that was 3-4 we just need jenkins to play back to his normal ways and have one of our olbs actually rush the passer Should i go on anymore
you're so right--the 4-3 D doesn't work--the Giants run it and, well, they just won the super bowl last year (but it can't work, right?)--the Cowboys also run it, and they have already sacked the Giants 6 times tonite (so far)--Yeah, you're the expert--the 3-4 is working real well for the jets--You must have loved the way Shaun Hill and Tyler Thigpen carved up the jets great 3-4 defense (no oh-fence)
Because Gholston has failed to develop as a LBer means our personnel is really just as good for the 4-3. A DLine of Ellis, Mosely/Pouha, Jenkins, and Gholston would do well, certainly as well as our current defense is doing. Bryan Thomas is a joke, his guaranteed money is very low, the financial pain of cutting him would not be great. Both BT and Gholston can't be the pass rushing OLB we need to make the 3-4 work. If we can get someone to play OLB well besides Pace and an ILB who can cover we would have a good 3-4, but if we get just one more player to play 4-3 LB we can have a good 4-3. The real problem here is both Gholston and BT not panning out. You need pass rushing threats from both OLB positions to make the 3-4 work.
lol yea cowboys run a 4-3 go post on the raiders boards. theyve been running a 3-4 for about 7 yrs now. nice job proving a point. And as far as the giants. Congrats one of the 24 teams that run a 4-3 won a superbowl. they have a 75% they will
Not to mention the fact that Jenkins is obviously banged up. Anyone remember how he played in the FIRST Buffalo game??? Remember how he dominated the line of scrimmage?? Remember how we held them (marshawn lynch and all) to 26 yards on 17 carries?? When Jenkins is on his game, we have one of the most dominant run defenses in football. We had a bad day on run defense because our stud nose tackle had a bad day. It happens. END THREAD
Great idea. The year we finally get many of the pieces in place in our 3-4 for not only this year but the years to come as well, let's move back to a 4-3! Not to mention we would now have Brian Thomas, Vernon Gholston, Calvin Pace, Shaun Ellis, and Kenyon Coleman playing end with no linebackers. These guys can barely cover in a 3-4, imagine them in a 4-3! And that we finally got a premier nose tackle in Jenkins. He hasn't been as dominant in recent weeks, but for most of the year, he has been the prototypical 3-4 NT and then some. Please think before you post.
Yes, the Jets should play a 4-3. They only spent three years trying to get the personnel in place for a 3-4, and now that they are finally close, should definitely switch back. :rofl2:
