Right now, with the Jets team as it is, I'd rather have Pennington, but in the future it would be Eli. He is already a fine QB, but it is yet to be seen if he has Manning syndrome and wilts when it counts. The comeback in the Eagles game was pretty impressive.
The Giants comeback in Philly wasn't that impressive really. The Burress fumble into the enzone was bizzare and extremely lucky. Also, didn't Westbrook fumble at the end to set the Giants up (not that the Giants D didnl't have something to do with that - I don't recall the exact play)? Anyway, Eli has to show he can grow out of the dumb INT stage because he still does it in big spots. His play is extremely uneven. As someone else said, Chad is playing extremely well with no running game and a rookie/journeymen OL. If he had the right weapons? Who knows?
I have no idea what Manning is going to turn into but he was way too expensive for what he's showing now. For the long run I'd pick none of the above if I had to choose between Chad and Manning. For this season I'm not sure who I'd take either. Put Chad behind a very strong offensive line and he's a super bowl caliber QB. Manning still hasn't shown me that he can lead a team week in and week out.
Eli's passer rating is 92.3 not 74, he leads Pennington in every catagory. He does have 2 more INT'S than Pennington but he also has 3 more TD's. Pennington's passer rating was also helped by garbage time against NE and you could throw in garbage time against JAX if you want to be fair. They have both played well in a couple of games and stunk in a couple of games. Eli has been improving this year and Chad played poorly 2 weeks in a row.
NE wasn't garbage time, we were w/in a TD early in the 4th qtr. How was Chad helped by grabage time in jax? jax is the only bad game he has had. take away that game and Eli isn't even close to Chad. Eli threw 3 garbage time TDs against Seattle and he only has 1 game w/o at least 1 INT. Outside of the jax game Chad only has 1 legit INT(the other was a hail mary) and that INT was after we stupidly went for it on 4th and G from the 3 and Chad was just throwing it up hoping a reciever would come down w/ it. Outside of the jax game Chad has had a 90 or above rating in every game. Eli has only had 2 games above 90 all year.
Where is the flea flicker, where is the reverses, where is Smith throwing the ball. WHERE DID ALL THAT GO TO. We made it look real good in pre-season but was that just a tease. For the PAST 6 weeks IMO our most valuable player is our punter.
Coles is having a great year and will most likely on this current run break 1200 yards passing. BUT it seems with the way Ben boots that ball and pins our opponets they have alot of green to cover to come back to score. Plus our special teams coverage has been pretty good with Smith.
Also, let's not forget artificial inflation of his ratings. A LOT of his completions are short dumps that add no value to the game situation.
Passer rating to me doesn't mean much. TD's, Yards per attempt and TD to INT ratio over the course of a season. You can go 1 for 3 for 11 yards and a first down and 2 for 3 for 6 yards and punt and your passer rating is better.
I think, unless someone can tell me exactly how you figure out the QB ratings, people shouldn't argue about them. I have no idea how they do it.
Passer rating is just an efficiency rating, nothing more than that. Joe Namath had a terrible passer rating for his career and yet was a great QB when he was healthy and on his game. Terry Bradshaw had a mediocre passer rating for his career and yet was the most impactful QB of the decade in the 70's. Tom Brady's passer rating was barely in the top 10 during the Pat's first two super bowl triumphs and yet no other QB likely would have won those rings. I'll go out on a limb and say that passer rating is probably one of the least likely stats to correlate with a super bowl trophy in any given season.
Some QBs who have started in Super Bowls but have had less than stellar careers: Joe Kapp Craig Morton (twice) Vince Ferragamo David Woodley Jim McMahon Tony Eason Doug Williams Jeff Hostetler Mark Rypien Stan Humphries Neil O'Donnell I post this only to point out that comparing QBs isn't really that important when what we all really want is a championship. You don't need a Dan Marino to get to or win one. And even he doesn't guarantee you a SB victory, obviously!
