I am furious about McClover and Dreesen. McClover is our best STs player, to cut him is insane and mangini is being short-sided about STs. When BP came in here in '97 the biggest reason we won 9 games was b/c of our improved STs play b/c he put so much emphasis on it and losing a guy like McClover is big and we saw how big last year when he was hurt. I am stunned about Dreesen, we pick up 2 journeymen TEs, get rid of a decent pass catching TE then we cut Dreesen? It makes no sense. the only other one I am little surpsied by is maddox, i thought he did enough to make the team.
McClover is not such a surprise when you think about it. With the defense switching to a 3-4, Mangini is looking for more of a prototypical 3-4 linebacker. McClover is just too small. While he is a very good special teams player, you can't take up a roster spot for special teams alone, especially when the DL is thin and you need more LBs for a 3-4 defense. The bottom line is that McClover would only play special teams and would not be able to play effectively on defense. Therefore, his value to the team is diminished considering he can't fill in for an injured linebacker. Dreesen, on the other hand, is more of a surprise. Mickens doesn't surprise me. He had one good season as a nickel back and we have many young DBs. The secondary looks like a strength right now and he just isn't good enough. You don't keep an inferior player for "leadership". As for the WR's Ridgeway and crew - where were they going to play? With Coles, Cotchery, McCareins, Dwight and Smith where is the hole? And don't start with the McCareins bashing. Every year there is some WR that people want to keep after preseason. Then he gets cut and we never hear from him again. A team's 4th WR catches maybe 10 balls a year. The 5th WR doesn't play unless there is an injury. I think the 5 WRs on the roster are fine, especially when you consider what Smith has shown.
While I'm not furious about McClover and Dreesen, I am a bit baffled by those cuts. They definitely had potential Dressen more to being a started then McClover but McClover was a ST demon and a pretty good backup LB. Dressen not only showed some good hands last year but he's supposed to be a solid blocker and a long snapper. Not sure what those other TEs we picked up bring to the table. Not exact sure the plan there. Also not sure why you would bring in Poteat just to cut him. I forget the PS rules but it would be nice to see them back.
That makes a bit more sense about McClover. I thought he had a bit more size though and could fill in nicely but I can't say I followed him closely enough. Only thing I would say about the WRs is that Ridgeway seemed to have more upside then the "surprise" WR they kept though maybe he showed more on STs. I'm with you on McCareins and think he gets a bum rap from Jets fans. He's yet to a) play with an OC who consistently threw to his WRs and/or b) have a healthy QB to throw him the ball. Think about his first season, it took Hackett quite a few games before getting the WRs involved and that first season he pretty much caught every ball that was thrown his way (that was a decent throw). Last year he still led the team in YPC I believe and I believe it was top 10 or 15 in the league though I could be confused.
jets cuts OL Ed Blanton, Marko Cavka, Charles Missant, Steve Morley, Doug Nienhuis, and Issac Snell; WRs Reggie Newhouse, Dante Ridgeway and Sloan Thomas; TEs Joel Dreessen, Joe Kowalewski, and Walter Rasby; RB Stacy Tutt; DL Darrell Adams, Matt McChesney, Brennan Schmidt; LBs Craig Bailey, Blake Costanzo and Darrell McClover; and DBs Andre Maddox and Jamie Thomp.son im very mad they dropped reggie newhouse i thought he had something but maybe they are anticipating on signing a wr. also the departure of darrell mcclover is dissapointing 2 years ago he was our star st player. and we dropped andre maddox who we drafted last year and is darrell adams titus adams? our draft pick this year ??? =(
