Has Mike Tannenbaum become the best GM for the Jets this quickly?

You raise some interesting points. i think Schottie likes to improvise and be creative if he has the players to do it with- he didnt get it done last year with CP's arm and KC's inexperience, and then coles' injury.

Favre also is an improvisor, and if he has the weapons at his disposal, he will thrive. I expect good synergy between these guys, and Favre's success will absolutely make the CS look better.

Anyways, i found this article which also touches on some of the points you raised:

How will Favre impact the Jets? Story Highlights
Favre will reunite with former Packers tight end Franks
Offensive lineman will have to hold their blocks longer
Key for making this work is for Jets to adapt to Favre

SI.com writer Don Banks shares his thoughts on how the Jets offense will look with Brett Favre at quarterback.

At first glance, it would appear Favre took quite a tumble going from a young and talented Packers offense that was surprisingly ranked No. 2 last season to a Jets offense that slumped all the way to 26th in 2007. But that gap is deceivingly large based on New York's current roster and its offseason upgrades. Once he gets acclimated to a new offense, Favre should make New York's attack that much better.

Favre may not have all the weapons at his disposal that he did last season in Green Bay, but the Jets, at the very least, should field a better, more versatile offense with their glaring weakness at left guard filled by veteran Alan Faneca in free agency, and the first round of the draft bringing a legitimate play-making tight end in Dustin Keller.

Keller looks destined for a big role as a rookie based on his early camp work, and Favre will no doubt focus on generating an early connection with his young tight end. Be it Mark Chmura in his early years or Donald Lee last year, Favre has always benefited greatly from having a tight end who could work the middle seams of the field. Ironically, Lee's emergence made tight end and former first-round pick Bubba Franks expendable in Green Bay, and he signed with the Jets. In New York, Favre and Franks will be reunited.

In Green Bay, Favre's big year in '07 was greatly aided by the breakthrough seasons turned in by second-year receiver Greg Jennings and rookie receiver James Jones, who combined to catch 100 passes for almost 1,600 yards, and 14 touchdowns. Along with Lee, and No. 1 receiver Donald Driver (82 catches for 1048 yards), the Packers No. 2-ranked passing game soared.

The Jets admittedly don't have that kind of depth at receiver, but their top two, starters Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery, are effective when they can stay healthy. Cotchery had a very similar season to Driver last year (82, catches for 1,130 yards), and Coles caught 55 passes for 646 despite missing four games and starting only 10. They're also both tough players who will fight for the ball, and Favre will appreciate their determination.

The question in New York is who will emerge as the Jets' No. 3 receiver among a rather non-descript group that now includes receiver/quarterback Brad Smith, Chansi Stuckey, David Clowney, David Ball, Wallace Wright and rookie Marcus Henry. There's a job to be won if one of those can step forward this preseason.

The Jets believe their 19th-ranked running game from a year ago will be better because of Faneca's presence, plus the free-agent addition of veteran Damien Woody, who is shifting to right tackle after years of playing in the interior of the line. I have my doubts about Woody's ability to hold up at tackle over 16 games, but that's a roll of the dice New York seems willing to make.

While Favre doesn't have promising young running back Ryan Grant to give the ball to any more, as he did in Green Bay, New York expects Thomas Jones to have a more impactful second season as a Jet. Jones had 1,119 yards last year, but he needed a whopping 310 carries to gain those, with just a 3.6-yard average carry and one touchdown. The hope is a better offensive line produces more big-play chances for Jones.

Favre's late arrival will no doubt make for a challenging transition. But once he's comfortable in New York's offense, the Jets quarterback position should be in considerably better hands than it was with either the vertically-challenged passing arm of Chad Pennington or the largely unproven Kellen Clemens.

    1. Tanny didn't take us out of cap hell, the cap going up by like $25mm in two years did that.

    2. Drafted better...I don't think that holds up as well as it seems. The Jets have added four high quality starters from the draft since Tanny took over and 3 of them are 1st round picks. Keller and Gholston will probably be situational players this and maybe next season. Leon is a part-timer and Eric Smith/Drew Coleman/Brad Smith are not high quality.

Really, their first draft which spanned 10 picks includes 2nd and 3rd round busts and a 4th round gem. The second draft includes two studs. And the jury is out on this draft.

    3. I don't see how he has made us younger? Traded for "seasoned" RB, signed a two 30+ O-linemen, brought in a 38-year-old QB, acquired a 29+ FB, TE, LB, DE and DT. Teams should get younger through the draft as they acquire the rights to seven players (unless your Tanny) who are coming out of college. The Jets signed one significant FA under 30, right?

    4. Aggressive in FA just means willing to throw the most cash at players, right?

He may not be the best(Parcells) but he sure is the most EXCITING Jets GM I've ever seen with his splash of moves this offseason.

Only if you believe that the players' prime concern is money. Personally I believe Tannenbaum and Mangini must have decent recruiting skills on top, given the players they have convinced to join a 4-12 program.

This years spending spree IMHO is PSL driven & was most likely ordered by Woody. If PSLs were not on the near horizon we would have been the SOJs. Since the NYJs have to sell 20Gs per seat PSLs we had to make a big splash which Woody feels will make it easier to sell those pricey PSLs

This is one of the few things we can agree on. Improving the team is one thing, but this does seem as a pure justification spree for the legal robbery that PSLs are.

At least the team is vastly improved though. On paper.

Yes thanks to the upcoming PSL as a by product of that the team itself has been improved especially at the QB position. BF should make our OL block harder & certainly make the other sides D team wonder what out next play will be. It should make for a very exciting year since our schedule is so so weak. I am sure CBS is already licking there chops over a matchup in the AFC championship game of BF vs TB

You were around those offseasons right? Like...alive and such right? Both in '06 and '07 we had *no* money to spend before a few moves were made.

    I'm sorry...you don't think that holds up?

What'd we get out of the Herm/Bradway drafts? We've basically got Rhodes and...?

    WTF...second round bust in who...Clemens? Dude...seriously?

And even then you're describing *good drafts.* Like WTF do you think a good draft is? Everyone becomes a HOFer?

Uh huh...how about you try to look up the rosters average age when Tanny got it vs. what is it now?

I mean it's kind of clear we're younger...we just spent last season as one of the youngest teams in the NFL...we're younger and has been younger at LT, C, ILB, CB, DE, LB, TE, and S...like WTF are you talking about? And Pace and Jenkins are 28 or younger...

Yea...yea thats what it means....cause thats all it takes right...shit most of here could probably do his job.

Are we really this ignorant as a fan base?

    Love getting you fired up...

I find it funny that you are comparing Tannenbaum to Herm/Bradway. If that is your benchmark for front office performance...yikes!

You continue to miss my points and respond with outlandish statements that don't tie to what I am saying. 1st rounders should be starters...is that more clear?

When you are entering your third season, can't beat out Chad Pennington, have your team trade for a 38-year-old QB and are getting outplayed by a practice-squader in training camp...I think the writing is on the wall.

Jenkins is 29. Again, you didn't read my post when I said that the "Jets signed one significant FA under 30"...Pace.

And, a google search didn't pull up average age. So, please show me the average age going into the 2006 season and the average going into this season. Yes, we were younger going into last season, but "no so fast my friend" when you look at this year's roster (which is what we are talking about.)

Do you disagree with the fact that the Jets had the highest offer to Faneca and Pace as was widely reported? I don't think it is just money, but I find it hilarious when people say GMs were "aggressive in FA" which typically equates to "they signed a bunch of FAs" which typically is a result of throwing the most money at them.

I think you confuse ignorance for objectivity...give it a shot...you'll seem smarter.

Tannenbaum has always had the reputation of cap guru and the man to get a deal done. I really do not blame him for the Kendall situation. Kendall and the like are not happy campers who will not be satisfied with any deal that's not on there terms. Good riddance! I feel a moment in Jets history coming that we will all remember for a life time!!!!

FYI, when the Tanny took over the cap was $85.5mm, it is now $116mm. If you can't get under the cap when it rises $30mm, you don't deserve to run an NFL team.

Forgot to add that the Jets were $14mm under going into the 2006 offseason and $20.8mm under going into the 2007 offseason.

One thing you must consider is the fact that the Jets have had very few true GM's in their history. In fact, ever since Hess took control of the team many years ago there have been only 4 GM's: Steinberg, Tuna, Bradway, and Tanny. Bradway was awful and Steinberg had mixed results, although we never went deep into the playoffs under him. That leaves just the Tuna and Tanny. The Tuna was unique in that he was both GM and HC at the same time for 3 out of 4 years. So do you judge him as a GM for the 2000 season only, or for all 4 years. I was never impressed with him as a GM and IMO he is an average at best GM. The 2000 team reflects that. But as one of the best HC of all time, he got us to the championship game in 98. To me that was more the coach and not the GM that accomplished this. Again, it's hard to gauge when he wears both hats. Ultimately though, the GM is repsonsible for the product on the field so I guess you can annoit him the best GM.

In Tanny's case, I would say he's already better than Bradway at this point. I like the moves he's made and his drafts. I agree with a lot of you that said we need to see how this team does this year before evaluating him, and he's only in year 3. But I feel that given the limited history of GM's and what he has done so far, you can certainly say he's one of the best. One thing that stood out to me during Favre's press conference was when he said he didn't want to talk to Tanny initially because he knew that he would be convinced to sign right away. That says alot about Tanny's GM abilities right there. Outside of Tuna, I can't remember anybody saying that.

Also, as far as winning goes no other GM other than Tuna has got us to the championship game. So if Tanny gets us there I would say he's the best ever (post SB win anyway)

I thought Dick Steinberg was horrible. Never drafted a Pro Bowl player and Bruce Coslet paid the price for it. Pete Carroll, too. Made the playoffs once at 8-8, thanks to Ken O'Brien and Raul Allegre pulling the last game out of their ass in Miami.

    1. Tanny did inherit a team in cap hell and the biggest salary cap increase was this past offseason. He was definitely handcuffed initially and had to make moves just to get breathing room.

    2. How can you complain about getting 2 pro bowl caliber players in the second draft? Do you prefer quantity over quality? These 2 look to be perenial pro bowlers. Plus it looks like Stuckey will be the slot receiver, so in that draft you have 2 pro bowl caliber talents and your slot receiver, plus a back up OL. I think any GM would be very satisfied with that draft. I would think most GM's would be satisifed at getting to 2 pro bowl caliber players by itself. If you sacrifice talent by stockpiling lower picks, you run a great risk of getting average players. This breeds mediocrity, something this team is known for.

    4. Faneca was the best gaurd available in FA. Of course he's going to cost a lot. Some people will say we overpaid for Pace and Woody, but these were weak areas that needed to be addressed. I would call it aggressive and smart.

I actually like what Tanny is doing for the most part. The whole debate started when DWare didn't understand that all I was saying was , to quote The Wolf, "Let's not start sucking each others [or Tanny's] d!cks just yet."

And, as I said in another post, I haven't been this excited going into a season since 1999.

You're probably right - I may be giving him too much credit. He did agressively pursue Holmgren to be the HC at the time, before settling on Coslet.

Clemens was a mid-2nd rounder. Not everyone works out in a draft. Ratliff was undrafted, so I guess it evens out.

If a GM of any team gets 2 10yr starters out of each draft he runs, he's done his job. Most guys or either depth or they fall off after 3-5 years. Tanny's 1st rounders have been staples so far, Brick included for arguments sake. So far there won't be any drop in 1st round talent as Keller is the uncoverable TE and Gholston as looked good attacking the QB. Gholston may take a full year, which is not a bust, he has to learn a big aspect of his position.

30 isn't bad for trench players and FBs, they can play well until they are 34, then they truly fall off. Richardson is a HOF, so why not have him here to teach. Wisdom is contagious and valuable in the NFL. Plus, these FA signings were to plug holes. This bright season wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for them.

I believe the Jets were the 5th youngest team before the FAs, now they are maybe 9th. Thats where you want to be. A good mix of veterans and budding football players.

Steinberg drafted Aaron Glenn in 1994, Mo Lewis in 1991, and Richie Anderson in 1993. But he never lived to see them make the Pro Bowl. He also drafted Rob Moore in 1990, and he did make the Pro Bowl in 1994.
