LF is at the beginning of what seems to be a great career. TO is at the twilight of what is a great career. Stats don't always paint the greatest picture, but can help with arguments. TO's first 5 years in the league he made 43 TDs. which doesn't compare as well as you make it. He also had Steve Young throwing the ball to him and I seem to remember Young being a statistically a high percentage thrower.
No no no no no. That is not a contradiction. There were good players available in the later rounds, thats a fact. There always are good players to be had in the later rounds. But because it is a weak draft, means that the consensus is that their just arent a lot of good players in the later rounds. But they are still good guys out there to draft.
I said glaring holes for starters, not backups. Also, no one knows how good our o-line backups are. We won't know until one of them has to step in and play. For all we know they could be amazing. That goes for most of the backups actually. Personally I hope he gets to sit for a year and learn.
All I can say to this is that the current FO has had amazing injury luck and it better continue. "Can't miss" doesn't include "Can't take a knee or back".
Agreed.* I would've stayed at 17 and gotten Percy Harvin; he could perform right away.* It was huge to lose Elam and Ratliff and Coleman were not at all dead weight.* Of course, Mike T thinks since we're the New York Jets, we need a big-name QB.* But what's done is done; we'll make the best of this very good rookie quarterback.
I think I understand your point, but you will also agree, I think, that the backups have no track record of effectiveness. The point you referred to noted that two of the OL starters are in their thirties, and that there are no proven backups for the OL. I think that is a fair statement.
Hindsight is 20/20 so its easy to say this now but... We probably should have traded down in last years draft.
There's a difference between second tier players who are always available and a franchise QB who are rarely available. It is only huge to lose Elam and Coleman if you think that they were stud starters who couldn't be replaced with any number of NFL players who are always on the move. If you look at who we got in FA it's clear that both of them were going to be seeing less of the field anyway. It was only huge to lose Ratliff if you think a number 3 QB couldn't be replaced by a veteran cut or an FA pickup. We have plenty of skill position talent on this team that's less unproven than any number of 1st round WR that were picked this year. Cloney is as fast as anyone drafted. Stuckey runs nice routes has decent speed and excellent hands. Smith is as elusive in space as anyone coming out. We have a potential game breaker at pass catching TE. We have a good OL and if we get the power running game going and have a QB who can make quick decisions we will be able to create mismatches all over the field. Not to mention we have a lethal weapon in Washington. This team desperately needs a smart quick talented trigger man and now we hopefully have it. If Sanchez is the guy we think we got, he will make a lot of players much better.
I hope it works out; I really do. I also think that Sanchez has to practice against our D, which isn't exactly slouch. If Sanchez makes a mistake our D will eat him up. I actually think this is a huge plus for his, hopeful, rapid development. Look at how our D has stimied Clemens's career.
