"Win Now". There are PSL's to sell. I do hope the Jets are good enough this year to go into a draft next year and find replacements players and depth.
This was a weak draft and our FO got the players they wanted at positions we needed, plus they made moves in free agency to improve our secondary. I like the way they think. IMO Greene was a sure-fire pick and with Sanchez and Clemens, I'm positive we have a franchise QB.
The bradway regime left them with some bad drafts lacking star power. Mediocre players resulting in mediocre teams. I'm hoping their objective is to stack the starting lineup with good players, then follow up with aquiring more picks for depth purposes afterwards in following drafts. :shit:
In other news. With the aquisition of Sanchez, the Jets hope to have psls for the new stadium payed in cash.
Normally I would be pretty pissed off about giving up so many picks but in this case I thought it was a great move. We got a franchise quarterback, a potential starter at RB, and a potential starter at CB......all in a weak draft. Next year we will be in position to essentially draft BPA across the board in what is looking to be a really strong draft. There will be some growing pains this season, but by the time next season rolls around I think we will be running on all cylinders.
Mike Maddenbaum does not know how to have a draft with less than 2 trades. Bradway is no longer in the FO, Mangini is in Cleveland, and still we wheel and deal like a used car salesman on draft day. There is only one culprit, and the blame cannot be shifted from our GM any longer.
Even in weak drafts there are good players to be found in the mid rounds. Don't get me wrong, I like the guys we got. But you build a team through the draft, and you are more likely to get good players if you draft more players. What the Jets have been doing is targeting specific players in the draft, signing expensive free agents, and then building depth by taking players off the scrap heap. Eventually that lack of depth will kill you. You cannot ignore it anymore than you can the OL. Remember how shoddily Bradway treated the OL? The same thing is happening with quality depth.
Tony, This team is already built. We spent most of last year getting the Offense in place. And It's not just Cotch. It's Cotch, Clowney (slot) and Keller, Leon out of the backfield. All we are missing is a down the sideline, stretch the field guy...They think Clowney can be that guy (maybe...but should you draft something you have on the roster?) We realistically lost two and a half players. Favre. Replaced. Baker. Can be replaced by Robert Turner, if blocking is all we are looking for. Coles. Not Replaced, but..Clowney may be ready to step in, and there are a hundred FA's out there now, plus whatever August brings. This offseason, we spent our FA time upgrading the Defense. Losing the 2nd rounder was tough....But if Sanchez works out, thats a non issue. Trading up for Shonn G?????? According to reports he was our highest rated RB on the board....What we gave up to get there is inconsequential at best. (and that includes the fact of our late round ability of recent history) At the end of the day, the three guys (plus Sheppard) will all make the team. That's four for four. Had we picked 7 could you be sure we would have done better, come September? I think we are one year away from having a couple of Depth drafts.
Yup. Following our draft threads, Kiper called Jarron Gilbert to the Bears, the STEAL OF THE DRAFT (way to go Jabba!) If we had traded a 2nd next year, instead of this years, maybe we get Gilbert and Green... Then no one could possibly have an issue with this years take...But...the Sanchez deal was a complex bit of work... And to be honest it all hinges on Mark coming in and being the guy long term.
I hope you're right, Hobbes. I just get too worried that we are doing things the old Redskins way, and I don't want that. Like I said, I loved the move to get Sanchez. I just so too much freedom with trading away picks. I have a great feeling about Sanchez becoming a fantastic QB in this league...
Where as I agree with you about the depth, if we don't have quality starters, we are screwed. Quality depth means quality backup, not a a quality starter. Quality depth is like Abram Elam being a backup to Leonhard and Rhodes. We need to have a good starting lineup BEFORE we think about depth. We signed about a dozen UDFAs. Call them late round picks for free if u like. If we have a need, we'll go and get the best possible player. If a starter goes down, teams generally suffer the affect. Almost half the draft is generally playing on other teams after a yr or two anyways. If we get 2 players that remain here for the next 7-8 yrs or so, we did good. We'll be needing a DE next yr. Expect us to either trade for one this yr or draft one next yr. Once we have our DE in place, we may very well start to accumulate some picks. There are always a few UDFA gems, and I believe Ryan will find one of them. Just a gut feeling. Not like Ryan is the god or something, but finding a solid backup to say the least out of 4 UDFA shouldn't be a hell of a job for a defensive minded coach.
This post should be an OP for a thread in say about the beginning of November in the upcoming season.
Make it a sticky. Call me Magic 8Ball. We aren't really short backups at any position except WR and TE. August is not here yet. Cuts will enable us to upgrade those spots. We only need our current performers to produce. I loved...loved Chris Baker. But the way we (mis-) used him, A:cost us the Oakland game last year and B: makes him replaceable by an extra tackle (Robert Turner (g) lines up as TE) He caught 21 balls in 16 games last year, for a 9.2 Avg. Keller alone will replace that yardage in a different context, and Turner is a bigger more physical blocker.
I can't take credit for that, Br4dw4y5ux was the first person I saw post that about a week ago. As far as Woody, I'm sure he gave Tanny carte blanche to score a franchise QB at any cost... ...as far as Greene goes, maybe they had him rated so high that they could not imagine he would rop any further on day 2. He sure looks like a solid player with great awareness and a lot of power. He4's the type of back I have wanted since Mangini took over in 2006. I want to see him jack Jerod Mayo's helmet off on a goal line play. But it cannot be denied that it's Tanny above all that is pursuing all of these trade-ups.
Considering that we have the 2 best WR's in football in the division, I could almost agree with that statement. Given the philosophy behind our club, I find it less credible to say what we have will not get the job done. This team is being assembled like the 86 Giants. Name their WR's without using google.
I generally agree with the approach of targeting a player you want and getting him. Clearly QB was the Jets #1 priority and Freeman, Bomar, and all the other guys in this class do not compare to Sanchez. Similarly, there was no power back on the board after Greene, so good for the Jets reeling in their guy. That said, I agree with Tony that depth is going to become a problem for this team. The lack of a good backup DT to take pressure off of Jenkins killed our defense down the stretch last year; I still don't see that problem solved. When the weather turns cold the Jets better hope they have a working rotation or they will get blasted by deeper (and thus, fresher) opponents.
