I dont think Hackenberg is a complete lost cause in terms of an NFL career but every year he gets fluff articles like this so I'm skeptical
If Mac staked his job on whether Hackenberg would turn it around, he'd be one of the ballsiest unemployed NFL execs we know of. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
Here's the real SOJ moment: Hackenburg outplays Cousins by a wide margin in training camp and in the preseason games. The Jets, however, name Cousins their starter anyway because of what they're paying him, and Bowles comes out with an incomprehensible, mind-numbing explanation of why Cousins "give us the best chance to win."
My hope is Mac just cuts to the chase and gets rid of Hackenberg. If he hasn't gotten it by now he's never going to. Hack was like flushing a perfectly good 2nd round draft choice right down the toilet. He's an even bigger bust than Vernon Gholston at this point. Him and Petty should be gone. My hope is Mac resigns McCown and drafts TWO QB's like Mayfield and Luke Falk?
You could be right, but I think Mac would give him a shot, if for no other reason than to try to save face. Imagine if the Jets give Hack a chance, he wins the starting job and plays great. Mac would look like a genius and would be totally vindicated. It's Gailey's fault (and perhaps Bowles) that more wasn't done to develop Hack his rookie season. Hack did show some improvement this past season, and as Greg Cosell said, it takes 4 years for QBs to truly develop.
Based on what? I've seen nothing to indicate that Mac has give up on Hack at all. I think it's quite apparent that most Jets fans have given up on Hack, but that doesn't mean that Mac has. If what Greg Cosell said about QBs taking 4 years to truly develop is true, then it's likely that Mac hasn't given up on Hack. Petty's a goner. Hack is still under contract for 2 years and is cheap. Someone has to hold the clipboard. If he fails to sign Cousins, Mac will sign another vet, draft a rookie and have Hack. If that rookie isn't ready to play immediately, Hack could be given the chance to compete with the vet for the starting job. Even if the vet won the starting job, Hack would probably be the backup unless he looks totally awful.
I dont think anything comes of it as I've given up totally on him. Just last year he didn't look like he belonged in the NFL, let alone a starter.
I don't think Mac will stake his job on it. He'll hedge that bet by signing a vet and drafting a rookie unless he can sign Cousins.
You don't give up on Hack but the climb to the top is a VERY steep one. For one, he has to hope cousins doesn't come here, because he's basically a backup for the next few years. The best case scenario is the Jets grab McCown and draft a Mayfield. Then he will have to absolutely blow away the competition, kill it in preseason and hope a McCown is hurt and said QB isn't looking all that great. It's a lot for him to become a starter but it's good to know he's still trying to work hard at becoming something in this league.
Wow who to believe? Typical Jets news one step forward, two steps back. I think that would be a first. A highly drafted QB that never attempted a pass in the regular season. How could Macc get it so wrong on this guy and not try to rectify it by getting another young QB on the roster to develop.
Hack couldn't even beat out Petty and McCown. McCown only played one quarter of the first game and sat for 3 games in training camp.
I hate it when Hack fans say he didn't have protection, support, training, etc.... He has had nothing but training since he got here. He should know 2-3 different offenses like the back of his hand. After all he didn't have the responsibility of playing. He had the same support from coaches the other QB's had but probably more, since he was to be "Groomed" with Mac's approach. As far as the line play went when he played, he was playing against 3rd string and roster hopefuls. He was a 2nd round pick for heavens sake, with a roster spot already locked up facing zero game play pressure. He should have been the best player on the field, but wasn't. As far as him going somewhere else and fulfilling his destiny as an NFL starter, remember there were those who said the same thing about Nacho. He was supposedly mistreated here in NY too, but in hindsight the only people who were mistreated were the fans and teammates because of his ineptitude. He has a good arm as far as strength goes, but that is it. He just isn't that good in reality. He played against 3's and roster hopefuls, and looked like an UDFA who hadn't played a down since High School. He wasn't any good at Penn St, and the one good year he had was due to Allen Robinson. Robinson himself caught more than 50% of his TD's his rookie year. I would love nothing more than for him to be our QB for the next decade, and our team be a super bowl contender every year, but he has not did one thing to justify those hopes at all. He was really a very low draft round pick, or UDFA. If this guy Christiansen is a QB Whisperer and turns him into Marino, or hell even a McCown, I will be on the Hackenwagon 100% no joke. I just don't see it happening.
