Can you ever support anything the Jets do? If the Jets won the superbowl you would be complaining that they didn't win by enough.

I thought my post was far more about the total yardage stat compared to other measures of assessing team defense than it was about the Jets, pro or con.

I read it again, and I was right.

Sorry if I do not meet your specific standards of what a Jet fan should think.

    Well, not really.

Ftr I am very happy with the win. The total yardage thing? Not quite so much, but I can't please everyone, I guess.

How about - he is taking up space and opening up lanes for Richardson and Wilkerson to wreak more havoc instead of just thinking he is doing nothing.

    Oh and this ^ too

Sorry, I was misinformed in making the thread. If you look at yards allowed, the only team ahead of us who has not had a bye is the Texans, and they got us beat by about 200 yards

Julio jones may be out 4 the season. Jets opponents should just forfeit. We hurt people.

    Two defensive philosophies:

Buddy Ryan: stop them from gaining yards

Bill Parcells: stop them from scoring touchdowns

Both are valid approaches, and neither scoring defense or total defense alone tells the whole tale.

You know you have a truly elite D when you are first in scoring and total D, a la the 85 bears, or 2000 Ravens (who were actually 2nd in total D that year, unbelievably).

Ultimately, point differential is the name of the game. Every Super Bowl winner for the last ten years has had a point differential over 100, of course with the exception f BOTH Giants teams (which proves as we all know that they have been nothing more than a very lucky mediocre team).

Points allowed is faulty stat to judge defense by because it does not take turnovers or defensive TDs into account. Yards is a far better measuring stick.

The problem with these 2 "philosophies", is that fewer yards equates to fewer scores except when your offense turns it over a lot. It's not like one guy coaches on how to get less yards while the other one coaches based strictly on avoiding scoring. They are essentially the same thing.

We're 2nd in yards allowed per game although there are a bunch of teams very close to us. I don't think we're the 2nd best D right now, we need to consistently force more turnovers to obtain a lofty status like that. Also, the Titans and Falcons passing efficiency numbers the last 2 weeks is a little alarming. Right now we're a good D and I think a lot of our young players will improve as the season goes on. Where that puts us in terms of ranking remains to be seen. Our run D is unquestionably one of the best in the league though, that cannot be debated.

Some good defensive teams are better at red zone D than others. It's not all about the total yards thing. I'd rather have the D that can stop opponents in the red zone.

Another factor this discussion leads out is that a team with a high powered, high scoring offense will often be ahead in games and can afford to let off yardage as long as they are making the opponent burn up the clock.

Some teams that have a relatively weak offense cannot afford to play prevent D because their O does not score enough, and does not put them comfortably ahead in the last 20 minutes or so of the game.

In short your bolded statement it not generally correct.

A team with a good running O and good special teams that doesn't turn the ball over and dominates TOP could conceivably have a highly ranked D against both points and yards and not be that great. Stats are always interesting but they don't tell the story.

What I see with the Jets D is the front is dominating, LB are running free to make tackles and the secondary is keeping things in front of them. It's a developing D and it's got the potential to dominate. Were going to need a lot more games and more stats to see how we stack up to other teams. We also had a healthy running game for the first time yesterday. That's going to make a big difference in Defensive stats.

No they aren't. Parcells/Belichick/Groh and their disciples force you to slowly, methodically drive down the field. Ultimately, they are conservative, don't allow any big or easy plays, and As the field gets shorter, it becomes increasingly more difficult to have success on O.

As such, these teams will give up lots of yards, but very few points, and the long drives they force often result in a lot of turnovers.

On the flip side you have a Rex style defense, that is anything but conservative, and is not any more or less effective based on the field position. It's main objective is to disrupt through aggressiveness, and often leads to a lot of three and outs. But it also risks giving up big plays, and the aggressiveness works against then in the red zone as a QB needs less time for a route to develop.

To say they are the same philosophy is frankly sophomoric.

It's not even that. It's just the fact that you always seem to point out negatives in every pro Jets thread.

The defense has been great, per usual. We just need the offense to keep clicking. I like the way our personnel was being used, but I would like to see more of Stephen Hill and less of David Nelson in those power run/wildcat packages. I know he wasn't 100%, but we need his speed in those formations for play action and he is also a damn good blocker.

Regardless or whether we're ranked 2nd, 5th or whatever, this defense is very exciting to watch!
