No one in the league was desperate enough to sign a receiver for 7-8 million. Pretty much everyone was saying that was what his value was (he was behind Holmes and Rice who both got 10 million I believe). So many teams at the time pursued other free agents and Braylon just sat there and watched his value plummet.
They could've given Braylon the Plax contract. This was after free agency died down. The FO wanted to move on. If they wanted Edwards back he would've been back.
That was a shit year for free agents in general if I recall correctly. Profootballtalk had him at 13 and the list ain't impressive at all. I think the truth is he wasn't worth that much and that has proven out.
Again not true, thats why Tannenbaum ended up resigning Braylon in 2013. He wanted Braylon back in 2011 but he thought he was going to go for a lot more, so instead he went for the cheap option which was Plaxico. If the free agency had happenned like any normal year it wouldnt have been rushed, and Plaxico was in prison until June so Braylon would have been signed between March and June. Fuck the lockout, it hurt this franchise, no doubt in my opinion.
Every top free agent that year was a bust, Nnamdi sucked, Holmes never lived up, Edwards injured himself, Cromartie was alright(honestly did the best), and Rice never had as big of a year.
Ha I looked up the list and the description beside Nnamdi said: HOF player in his prime. Rare Funny to look back on in retrospect
The reason we are still talking about Mark is because it still smarts. Like it or not Sanchez is a key figure in recent Jets history . 2 AFC Championships his fans always bring up. He has to get some credit for it. Of course teams have won Super Bowls like the Ravens did with a crappy Qb. Would the Jets have been a better team with him or without him. I say without him. As for BE not sure it was strictly a money thing. The way I read it the coaching staff and front office just didn't want him around . But don't take it to the bank. We just don't know the whole story on him.
Once Braylon's value dropped they could've had him. They chose to move on. They thought Holmes was the better receiver ( which he was) and they gave him the money. Edwards was sitting there for days and could've been brought back for less. The Jets passed.
Uh yes I was. Brett Ratliff to David Clowney was the next Montana to Rice. The Jets never gave them a shot.
Actuall;y you bring up an interesting point. It's not like guys like Brett Ratliff don't have any talent. Was he that much a poorer Qb prospect than Mark or other guys who got extensive opportunities. I say that if Ratliff (who was actually traded to Cleveland in that trade up so the Jets could select Sanchez in 2009) got the kind of chances Mark and a lot of other guys got they might have been decent NFL Qbs. There are a few exceptions to this namely Tony Romo, Kurt Warner, etc. But for the most part with Qbs there are limited reps, and chances etc. and most of these guys never get a real chance to play. While the other guys get so much trial and error (entire poor seasons and they are still the starters)
No they could not, im telling you.... The way the 2011 free agency worked was the Jets entered under the mindset that they could only keep 2 of the 3 free agents. The Jets had like literally like 24 million (not exactly sure about the number) in cap space to work with, they were cutting it really tight. They immediately payed Santonio on July 29th, which was day one of the NFL free agency BUT training camps had already started multiple days prior. The Jets then pursued Asomougha for like 3-4 days, they failed to get him and signed Antonio Cromartie (keep in mind the Jets training camp started on July 29th so Cromartie was already showing up late), they then had just enough money to give Plaxico what they gave him, and that was it for the Jets, they didnt have any more money. At the time reports were still saying that Braylon was heading toward 7-8 million but ultimately with training camps all across the league starting prior to free agency, some teams must have like what they saw and opted to not pay a free agent reciever. Braylon stock completely crashed and it went from him getting a long term deal, to him taking what he can get because at this point training camp was already a week in. The Jets didnt have time to sit around for Braylon, their training camp was already underway and they needed a second receiver so they went for Plaxico immediately after they gave Cromartie his contract. Plaxico came like within hours after Cromartie http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/columns/story?columnist=cimini_rich&id=6059138
And just to add, if the 2011 free agency had been a NORMAL year, Braylon would have gotten a long term deal. He got screwed more than any other player because free agency came after the draft rather than before. Ontop of that the NFL Free Agency began after training camp had already started. So not only did teams get to draft wide receivers, they got to bring them into training camp and look at them before free agency even started. Also in a normal year, free agency is in March, instead it was in August. Plaxico Burress got out of prison in June, so if it had been a normal year, and lets say no one did sign Braylon, by June the Jets would have had picked him up and Plaxico never comes here. But I firmly believe Edwards would have gotten a multi year deal but having both the draft and training camp before free agency really screwed him over.
Why are you being so hard headed about this? Yes they entered the free agency period feeling they could only afford 2 out of 3 between Holmes, Edwards and Cromartie. But the way free agency played out they could've afforded all 3. The day they signed Plaxico they could've opted to resign Braylon instead. The Jets wanted to move on.
NO they couldnt have, Braylon wanted 7-8 million, training camp was already under way. I remember the whole thing perfectly, you are wrong, period.
Plaxico signed his contract 5 days before Braylon signed with the 49ers. Braylon could've gotten the money Plax got. Once Braylon realized no one is giving him the money he wanted. He would've took the reduced money. The Jets didn't even offer him a contract. You know why? They wanted to move on. That's why.
NO because training camp had already started and they needed a receiver in training camp. They signed Plaxico 4 days into free agency, 4 days into training camp. Edwards didnt sign his contract until 7 days in. They could not wait because training camp was going on already. Braylon wanted a multi year deal, the Jets couldnt give him a multi year, big money contract. THE END, you are wrong, just give up. ESPN: http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets/post/_/id/6178/braylon-edwards-to-49ers There, is that clear enough for you? is that clear enough for you 1985ER?
Read the article you posted. "It’s a drop for a player who, at the start of free agency, was looking for a multiyear deal and a No. 1 spot on a team. Some teams, like the Jets, dropped out of the Edwards stakes early because they didn't want to pay him what he expected." This was what I last posted. "Once Braylon realized no one is giving him the money he wanted. He would've took the reduced money" So basically once he knew he was not getting the multi year deal. He would take a reduced deal like he took with the 9ers. With Braylon's value decreased the Jets could've offered the contract they gave to Plaxico, to Braylon. Which was similar to the contract Plaxico got.
Yeah but the issue is the Jets gave every last penny of their cap to Plaxico, like literally they may have had 500 grand left to spend after Plaxico was signed.
