I think people who aren't doing a good job in there current position generally don't get promoted in the private sector.

I know plenty of people who are promoted due to factors other than doing a "good job". Is it a good job if one makes themselves look good at the expense of others? Eventually, their true nature is revealed. Then, it is really the fault of the person who promoted them for not seeing their true nature.

per @AdamSchefter "The NYJ actually looking to bring in Gene Smith as competition for QB Geno Smith. The front office believes the similarity in their names will push Geno to become the next Tebow."

This entire thing has been about cronyism. Casserly hired a bunch of people he is close with. They in turn do the same. Terrible.

That might be true at your local McDonald's franchise.. you can make it to assistant management by riding the coattails of others but you don't make it to the top of a massive operating organization like an NFL team without being a success yourself along the way.

There's only 32 football GM jobs in the whole world.. there's a massive vetting process, 1000s upon 1000s of people bust their asses for years, dedicate their whole lives in football operations and barely make beyond scouting or contract analysis... If you sucked at everything, were a complete incompetent doofus you "don't fake it until you make it" your way to the General Manager's seat- lets be real.

I don't know this Gene Smith guy personally or anything but my guess is he's like John Idzik.. showed success and promise along the way but wasn't cut out for the top job. If a GM friend with another organization hired Idzik to work under him in the role he was better at -it really wouldn't be all that surprising or indicative of potential failure.

Casserly went out and hired two of his buddies, and the fanbase rejoices. Just like they rejoiced b/c "Idzik built Seattle". Our fans are so desperate for success they ignore these obvious bad signs.

Link to prove Bowles is Casserly's buddy? Being a player he drafted doesn't count unless you're retarded.

He played for Casserly and worked for Wolf. Hardly an impartial hiring process.

Seems like a reasonable argument. I just pulled this up after a search:
    http://www.bigcatcountry.com/2015/1...gm-gene-smith-candidate-for-jets-front-office

"Smith's only NFL experience was with the Jaguars. He started out as a College Scout in 1994, and got promoted to Director of College Scouting in 2000. He was then promoted once again to general manager in 2009, but after four years of disastrous drafts and questionable (at best) contracts handed out to free agents and current players alike, he was fired in 2012.

When you look at Smith's drafts, it's amazing that so few of his guys actually hit. Defensive lineman Terrance Knighton in the third, wide receiver Cecil Shorts III in the fourth round, and linebacker Brandon Marshall in the fifth round were probably his only value picks in four drafts."

This resume does not indicate he is so well-rounded at all. He was a scout. He gathered data. (probably loaded with mathematical errors). If you look at the Jaguars record historically, it turns out they have not won the division since 2000--the exact year this douche took over as director of scouting. They won the division in 98 &99. The were 14-2 in 1999. Since then they have had 3 winning seasons in the next 15. He was fired as GM after the worst season they ever had at 2-14.

He sucks and how the hell he is even being considered is scary. This is the data--not opinion.

He's being considered bc he is friends with McG. Just like Bowles is friends with Wolf/Casserly. It's not about hiring a qualified coach or GM, it's about hiring your friends.

So we hired two well accomplished, well connected NFL front office guys to help with the process and they had to nerve to pull people they had experience working with. I would have expected them to draw names from a hat but god dammit they decided to use people who they knew.

Link to show Bowles is buddies with Casserly?

Like Maccagnan, Bowles, 51, has ties to Casserly that go back two decades, to Bowles's time as a defensive back with Washington when Casserly was the GM there. Bowles later got his start in personnel work and coaching when Wolf, then the Packers' GM, hired him to Green Bay's player personnel staff. Bowles has since had many stops in his career, including a season (2000) as the Jets' defensive backs coach.

You want to know if they go to each other's family get-togethers?

He refers to him as his buddy. He was the GM while he was a player. That's retarded.

It's a bullshit narrative that you guys can shove up your asses.

I'm not pushing the narrative of Casserly and Bowles but you are acting the ostrich if you think they don't consider each other friends.

Even IF they were best friends & neighbors who help each other with yard work every saturday afternoon, who cares, it's not like that is a necessarily a disastrous approach.

This organization tried the whole - lets have a non-partial, non-football people led connected search and we ended up with John Idzik who sucked ass.

Woody took heat last time for not soliciting opinion from football people... now he does that very thing and the complaint is that the football people grabbed us associates & friends. Wasn't that the purpose? Football people know football people..

Don't do it, Mikey. Just don't.

Based on the drafts he presided over, he had 3 hits:

Eugene Monroe, who is playing for another team
Pot Roast Knighton (?), who is playing for another team
Cecil Shorts, who is always injured

The stain on his resume that will never be wiped away is Blaine Gabbert.

For a team desperate for a franchise QB, would you want advising you the guy who reached for Blaine Gabbert at #10 overall??

Shit. If they're friends, we need to put an end to this now. We need Bowles to sleep with Casserly's wife and Wolf's dog before this shit goes any further. I can't believe they would have the nerve to suggest hiring a very qualified friend or acquaintance for a job. That's just crazy to me. Everyone knows you should be going down to the local 7-11 parking lot or monster.com for your next head coach. Idiots.
