I don?t think I like this move very much. I would much rather have the best LB in Sept be the starter. It may very well be Gholston, and I hope it is. Gholston has tons of talent. Jets have a few other young LB?s who have shown some talent. What if one of them is outplaying him in camp? Not so far feched really. I hope Gholston is starting in Sept, but I wish they had waited for mid August to announce it
Well, Rex Ryan must already see something in Gholston because this was not a draft pick of Rex Ryan, this was a Mangini move right here. Rex Ryan wouldn't call Gholston the starter for the first 1/4th of the season if he hasn't seen any type of talent, potential, heart of work ethic from Gholston...He just wouldn't and thats because this man has been around the game of football since he was just a kid---He has a great Defensive football mind and if he thought someone else was better than Gholston as of right now, that would be the starter.
I like the move because what's the worst thing that can happen? He sucks it up and goes back to the bench. Yes, it is a lot of pressure being put solely on Gholston. The word is now out and Ryan is expecting him to perform. Yet we would have to find out sooner or later if he's the goods or not. Might as well find out sooner.
i kind of agree with this. what's gholston have to prove now? at least he has the comfort of working with the 1st team in practice from here on out.
Advice to Gholston: When you haven't got the slightest clue of just what the hell is going on... RUSH THE QB. That's how LT killed so many QBs.
If I could see three televised seconds of the upcoming football season right now, it would be that snippet of our first defensive series of week 5 where they introduce our starting LB's. That would speak volumes.
Why is the coach announcing anyone as the starter at any position before camp even starts? Great motivation for anyone else looking to play themself into the starting lineup...NOT!
What a load! Gholston climbed the draft board because he was a combine freak, not because he was a great college player, and mangina fell in love with him. There is no way to know whether he would have been a top 5 pick this year. I think the jury is still out on whether he can play or not. They are gonna give him a shot and you can bet if he doesn't produce Ryan will be harder on him than Eric ever was. Besides, it shouldn't come down to having to get the guy excited to play. He's making big money to play. I do agree with you that Ryan has the respect of his players and they want to play for him. He proved that in Baltimore.
This is a good way to get him in the lineup. There's no chance that he would have started or played much if Pace was not suspended. That said, last year Mangini played others ahead of Gholston even as backups, so for him to be the automatic fill-in for Pace, Coach Ryan must have felt that he at least earned the first backup position. If Vernon is hungry to redeem himself, he will take advantage of the opportunity he's been presented with. If he struggles or is downright bad, I will finally be willing to call him a bust. Maybe he just shouldn't be a linebacker...we'll see.
Exactly!!! Winner, Winner...Chicken Dinner!!! Everyone expecting Gholston to be a coverage Linebacker, is going to be sorely disappointed.
Wow! Do you really think they should just name the starters before training camp so that some players feel loved and wanted? What about the guys who aren't named starters? Why come to camp and battle your ass off if the coach is gonna hand the starting assignments out before you even get started? I think Ryan is a good coach, and he might do good things for the Jets... But good solid competition in training camp can't be a bad thing. How else do you find out who has the balls to work hard and earn their spot?
Smart move ...get his confidence level up ...His job to lose for those first 4 games ... Lets go Ghost!!!
Are you kidding me? I'm a college football junkie and Vernon Gholston was a LOCK as far as being a top 10 pick goes. After the combine, yeah...You started to hear the Gholston buzz, but the man was already a top 10 lock, 100%. He could have sat out the combine and still went top 10, thats how much of a top 10 lock V.G was during last years draft. The man had 22 sacks during his two years as a starter (14 his Junior year) with OSU, he was also the best defensive player on the OSU team that went to the BCS championship game vs LSU, Gholston also had a sack that game. Anyone who says that Gholston wouldn't have been a top 10 pick before the combine must not really follow college football all that much because anyone who does...Knows the answer. Also, it's a positive that Gholston put on a freak show @ the combine...Not a "Negative", just goes to show what type of elite talent this athlete has. He would only be a rookie if not for leaving early, I'm confident in Gholston this year-He's a special talent.
