I'm not at all happy with it. I don't think the problem is Gholston. I think the problem is the coaching, because they have decided that somehow we'll be more likely to succeed with a passive prevent defense. Even though the passive prevent hasn't worked... well... ever, the team is still running it week to week. There is no creativity in the blitz packages. The linebackers spend a god awful amount of time in coverage (something they aren't very good at), and the Jets feel the need to substitute 6 players every play. Further, why does Cody Spencer and #57 play so often? They suck! Every time they're in, offenses go straight for them because they couldn't stop a human sized marshmallow. So, Gholston right now is the least of the Jets problems. He is a rookie, and a solid majority of rookies in the NFL take a few years to develop, not every rookie is an impact rookie. And out of the impact rookies, there are plenty who go on to do crap in the future. I'm concerned with the brain trust and how they are ok with executing a defense as ours is currently run. Want to see how a real defense is run, watch Pittsburgh and Baltimore.
I know, which has me wondering why? The talent is there now... attack FFS! Is it that Mangini has Sutton on a leash? Or has their experiences precipitated the shrinking of their balls to a microscopic magnitude, and it has translated to the scheme?
Absolutley NOT happy with the present D, but IMHO this has much more to do with what seems to be an INEPT coaching staff and not lack of talent.
I certainly will not say you are wrong here; I am just getting very unpatient. My feeling is we should put VG in and feed to his strengths; if that is pass rushing; sobeit. I am worried about him being the complete linebacker because he appears to have slowed down.
They should use that shifting D that they tried against the Pats last year. Do it against these spread offenses, and see if it can create some confusion and turnovers.
I agree VG should be put in and just allowed to go after the QB every play. Every rep he takes he'll be a little more confident and a little more likely to look like the player he was in college. Looking back on the preseason, all they had Gholston doing was running containment and zone coverages... he didn't rush the passer AT ALL during the preseason, and now they expect him to come in and average a sack per every 3 downs he touches the field. That is a ridiculous and unrealistic expectation. Use the guy for what he was brought in to do. When Parcells got Abraham, he let Abraham do what he was good at, and it worked. Abraham's other skills developed with time.
They should try to be creative in any way relating to attacking opposing offenses and forcing them to make mistakes. Right now, I think the top priority in the defensive war room is setting an NFL record for total player substitutions in a season.
Yes U got it! The template should be Balt or Pitt or maybe even the NYGs, The problem is they got players & we do not which I guess you do not realize. We have to many average to below average players starting vs what Balt & Pitt & the NYGs start so we cannot run that type of pressure D since we do not have the player to apply the pressure plain & simple. I guess if U choose to point fingers U have to go back to the end of last year when the CS did there off season evulation & decided to keep players that maybe should have been cut. Here is my list of average to below average D players Ellis K. Coleman B. Thomas E. Barton The entire DBF besides Revis & maybe Rhodes That leaves you 2 pretty good players out of 11 starters which is why we are what we are
the ONLY thing a rookie DE/OLB should be doing in his 1st year is rushing the QB on passing downs. this is a standard amongst the old time coaches and i guess mangini doesn't get it. jil
Like getting sick and pulling his groin? Sorry, I had to. I agree, Abe was a good pass rusher; it did take hiim quite a while to contain the run a bit though. We were prone to sweeps on his side because he would overshoot and the RB would go underneath. Couple that with at the time we played the 4-3 and you could adjust for that weakness to an extent.
But this is my point. I do not believe pass rushing is his strength. I've seen him get stood up by tackles, tight ends, guards and full backs. It's embarassing. And it's absolutely not what I expected when I cheered and screamed when we drafted him. Very disappointing.
I disagree on the talent. I think we have the talent to win games, in fact, this season I feel we have won in spite of our coaching, not our talent. If our talent AND our coaching was so bad, we wouldn't be 9-5 and in control of our playoff destiny. My feeling is that if we had a real coaching staff, like one led by Parcells or Cowher, then this wouldn't be a 9-5 team, it might be a 12-2 team right now.
Yes, I have seen this, too. I wish I could just see anything positive at this point to convince me that VG is going to make a #12 pick contribution, let alone, a #6 pick contribution.
Again, I think it goes back to what the coaching staff had Gholston doing when he was learning the scheme this preseason. He's thinking too much, not playing. They need to let him drop a majority of the scheme, and tell him to just go in there and wreak havoc on the field. Wherever the ball is, get to it and hurt somebody.
There is no way to prove what you posted one way or the other so it becomes a shoulda, woulda, coulda. Based on what they have shown so far it has to be the players ability since supposedly we have top notch coaches
