If he was a 5th or 6th round pick the expectations wouldn't be as high either. So yes, he would probably still be on the team playing special teams and getting occasional reps on defense when the situation allows. I would be a lot more worried if he was drafted with the intention of playing and contributing as a starter from day 1. Clearly the guys playing his position are excelling and the need for him to be on the field is not as pressing, yet...
BTW U did see that CBS Sportsline chose Mayo as the BEST DEFENSIVE draft pick for the 1/4 of the year did you not? I'm sure you know he was picked after VG by Belly
No if you want a championship team you need a championship D which at this moment we are a very long way from. A very long way. Just comapre VG play to Mayos play & then be honest who would have immediately strenghten our team VG or Mayo. Development in FB is mostly BS you have to contribute & just think if he was contributing how much stronger our team would be. Since he is a non contributor instead of stenghting the team he is in fact making the team weaker since he is contributing zero other then STs

he is contributing, on special teams. yeah its not sexy but special teams play is just as important as offense and defense. see the buffalo bills. getting by on defense, a bit of offense, and great special teams play. and we are bad on 3rd down right now. but obviously he is not ready to be on the field in those situations yet. so no he is so far not contributing on defense. but he would not be helping the team on third down even if he was on the field. when the nickel backs we have are making every slot reciever look like jerry rice no linebacker would be helping that situation.
