They only way Mangini goofed is "IF" Schlegel would have still been there a round or two later. Then, yes, we reached. We could've taken someone rated higher at that position and still gotten Schlegel later on. But who knows who else had their eye on Schlegel? He may have gone one pick before our next shot at him.
Your right. Its always that way. Bottom line is the guy made plays for a big time program. What happens if they wait till the 4th and miss on Brad Smith and he turns out to be a player. There is always going to be 2nd guessing when it comes to the draft. You have to judge this draft after 2 or 3 years to really see were a player is.
I really only agree with the fact that the Bills have more offensive talent than us. Other than Coles and Martin who is old, we just got a bunch of backups.Bills got McGahee and Lee Evans a rising star. Also i do think that Schegal and Eric Smith would have been there later on Day 2, Schegel in the 4th and Smith in the 5th. No i am not sure of this but i am pretty postive that they would have been there, even though some of u wont admit it. The fact is most of u guys had no idea who Schegel and Smith were and was just as pissed as everybody when the Jets toke them in the 3rd when Mort and Kiper said they were reaches, im pretty sure Mayock said they were reaches too.
I would've liked Darnell Bing over Smith, but all in all I think they had a pretty solid draft. Maybe they would've been around in the later rounds. Maybe the Patriots could've taken Tom Brady in the 7th round instead of the 6th. Bottom line is if they perform on the field the next time you'll be hearing about their draft position would be in the context of a steal rather than a reach. Value to me in the draft is like bringing home a girl to mom. Sure it's great if she likes her and that's what you'd prefer, but if she performs well when it matters than that's whats important. You always want to get value for your pick, but getting the player you want is more important.
This is completely irrelevent, just as Mayock, Mort, and Kiper saying they were reaches is completely irrelevent. It is not my job to know all these players. The Jets and all these teams scout these players. The Jets worked out 450 players. Whether I know them or not does not matter. It only matters to people who think draft rankings or draft value matter. They do not. What matters is if these players produce and help the team win. No one wins in the draft, it is not part of the NFL season even though people want to treat it that way. Anyone who was "pissed" by the picks are foolish. Frankly after the first 10-20 picks all of these "experts" boards fall apart. That is because after that point internal scouting of the teams, schemes, needs, all change the board dramatically from team to team. How many players viewed as 3rd rounder by Kiper falls to the 6th, 4th to the 7th, 5th taken in the 4th, etc. MANY, MANY. Because teams to do not draft by these draftniks opinions. Trying to predict anything past the first 20, is all but impossible. Whether we know these players or not does not mean a thing. The only thing that matters is the team getting the players it needs to win. If a team drafts so as to not piss off its fans or get "graded" well, it is doing a crappy job in the draft.
But it is their job to know all of these reaches so when all of high profile players are picked it is their job to know all of the other players who are not as regarded. So i respect their opinions on these lower round players more than i would anybody else. Also Kiper,Mort and Mayock talk to these teams like The Jets and ask for their opinions on surtain players that they scouted, it is just them saying these things but its what everybody feels.
I'd be very happy with 7 wins if I were a Jets fan. That would be considered a solid start to Mangini's head coaching career. We know the Bills wont win that many....
You completely missed the point. Whether they are reaches or failers, is not based on whether they were drafted where we expected them to be. It is whether they help the team win. Draft grades and values only matter to us and Kiper. If a team thinks a player will help them win and they don't think, for whatever reason, that player will be there after a certain round, it is their job to take that player. It is not their job to listen to Kiper and risk losing that player. The value of the draft is not if the team "reached" or got perceived round value, it is whether or not that players produces on the field. Period.
I'm looking for 8 wins this season. I would not be extremely upset though with 7. Next year however I will be hoping for playoffs. And make it to the SB on the 3rd year 4th year we win the SB! And thats when Vinny comes back to lead us at the ripe old age of 47! jk
I agree with u but until i see they can help us win i will still feel they were reaches because i feel they would have been their later.Yes it makes sense to pick a player some spots early if u feel he was gonna be picked by someone else. But it seems to me and alot of other people listening to what the experts like Kiper and Mort said that they would have been most likely have been their for your next selection or even the selection after that.
1. I think most Jets fans would agree that 6-7 wins are in reach. Maybe we'll be surprised but most fans know the deal here. 2. I would say that Buffalo and the Jets have a lot of questions to answer in regards to producing a complete team. Talent at certain positions does not necessarily mean wins. Lets see what our new system brings, it may flourish from some players improving from the implementation. 3. Our running game will come from our OL doing their job. Obviously our first two draft picks were used to improve this area. Our pass rush will depend on the defensive system that is used to utilize our capabilities. Lets give the new regime a chance to show what they can do regarding both categories. 4. Maybe Schlegel was a reach, who can say???? Obviously our people saw something that made them pick him when they did....I'm sure they did their homework and thought his value was better than others. It's delusional to rate his value on the basis of a draft recap, he has not played one down yet. I'll go with an optimistic wait and see attitude. Overall, I am quite happy in regards to our draft and how the team is being handled under the new regime. Forget about last year. Only time will tell if the Mangini/Tannenbaum system will produce. This a rebuilding process, give it a chance, have some confidence that it will excel.
Several things: 1.We will probably win somewhere in the realm of 7 games. That's not terrible. 2.The AFC East is not, on the whole, that much better than the Jets.... New England- lost McGinest, Vinatieri, and Ashworth this offseason. Reche Caldwell is a starting wideout. Right tackle is a huge question mark. Gramatica is washed up. Buffalo- McGahee? People might be fooled by the way he's performed against the Jets, but this guy is...well, he's not overrated. He's a very average back and everyone knows it. Craig Nall was brought in TO COMPETE FOR THE STARTING JOB, so I can't imagine their qb situation being much better than ours. A mediocre offensive line was not improved. Losing Sam Adams is a big blow as well. Miami- Very talented on offense, very old on defense. What will Daunte Culpepper and his knee look like? Safeties are terrible, and Jets fans who catch a Giants game every now and then know what Will Allen is like. If Culpepper can return to form, the offense will be explosive, but if he can't, this team is going to be just as mediocre as the rest of the division, and the Pats will win it running away. -X-
I love the emotionally based drivel that has spewed out since this thread started. I'm a troll b/c I dare to question Tangini and their draft strategy. Uh, OK, these two venerable personnel men have so much capital that I wouldn't dare question one of their draft picks. I bet most of you followed lock step with Kotite and Herm and waited like wet rats to admit the ship is sinking. I'm not putting Tangini in line with those two clowns yet but your lemming, thank you sir, we endorse each and every single move you make w.o question is pathetic and immature. I guess it doesn't bother any of you nitwits that not one draft guide had Schlegel as a first day pick. None of these draft services are in touch with anybody who know anything about the draft. Everybody is wrong and the two newbies are right. Tangini had a gut feeling that all of a sudden this guy's draft stock was so high they had to grab him with a high third round pick. Value, again sonny, is taking the right player at the right spot. You don't win by reaching for backups when there are starting caliber players at more critical positions available. That's bad GM work. Schlegel is neither. I'm so sorry that you little prissy girls can't handle a different spin than your pie in the sky, we're the new Patriots b.c our HC and GM once worked with Belichick. Grow up, people. The Jets are nowhere near the Pats and Tangini should be questioned until they prove they are at least close.
How many players viewed by most guides as 5th/6th rounders to priority free agents (undrafted) get drafted high in the third round? Answer: Not many As a GM you have to know where the rest of the league rates every prospect you're interested in. On this count, tangini failed miserably. If teams draft for scheme and need how does a guy who runs a 4.8 who isn't even one of the top 5 best defenders on his team rate as a 3rd rounder? You're making no sense. The draft ratings are a convenient tool when they say positive things about the players we've drafted. They shouldn't be meaningless when they don't.
You're fooling nobody but yourself. McGahee and Lee Evans are far better than any combo of Jet skill position players. The Pats had an amazing draft and have tons of young talent. Somehow I think BB can replace his kicker and RT. Lame points on your part. Miami added a first round safety and Reynaldo Hill. Their secondary was bad last year but Saban is a good enough coach to know how to improve it. They've added 2 corners, and I'm sorry Madison was awful in every Jet game how can Will Allen be worse, he's younger and faster. Their defense has enough good players to be dangerous again and Jason Taylor is an elite pass rusher, something we no longer have despite the weak efforts by some of you homers to insist that doesn't matter. C'mon guys. Every team in this division is better to far better right now. Only the Iras and Kotitans are in denial otherwise.
Yes, it's their job to do it, and they consistently FAIL AT DOING IT WITH ANY TRUE ACCURACY EVERY SINGLE YEAR. With absolutely no accountability, because it's "entertainment". Whatever. If you're going to put that much credence into the opinions of these hacks, then it's your mistake, not mine.
Dude Miami has a first year running back and NE has an aged RB and a rookie not to mention they had two rookies on their line. That is a moot point. We can worry about a running game next year. Maybe Houston, Washington, Moore, Blaylock will surprise us under our new line. Rebuilding the line was the number one priority and that was accomplished this draft. Drafting a pass rusher in the 3rd isn't going to fill the gap of pass rushing. We drafted a huge DT in the 3rd last year and everyone was happy but that didn't fill a gap.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU FOR SAYING THAT! I'm getting tired of all the man love for the draftniks around here.
