Understandable. I am very interested in how this offseason/free agency turns out. I agree with you that our secondary needs to be addressed, and it seems that Leonhard might be the answer at Safety. My ideal scenario would be to draft a CB in the 1st round, and thus making our secondary one of the best units on the team. With the addition of Ray Lewis/Bart Scott, our defense would look excellent on paper going into the 2009 season (with OLB opposite of Calvin Pace being the only real hole).
jesus...there's posters in this thread that are willing to give up our 1st rounder AND Coles for Boldin.....you figure the guy stood barefoot in a lake and baptised children or somethin'.
Coles has guaranteed money for 2009 so even if were able to make this trade we'd still be giving him a fat paycheck while playing for Arizona. I think the Jets are in the process of attempting to rework his contract in such a way that moves the guaranteed money to another year so we can send him packing this year without any dead money.
It would be interesting to see his interaction with Eric Smith if he came here. The guy practically ripped his head off.
Giving up Coles and getting Boldin is a smart move. Coles is basically a 2nd wide receiver at this point while Boldin is a solid #1. He's strong and he's big (attributes we don't currently have at that position, at least not in one player) and he's still in his prime. Rumors have been floating around that he would be willing to return to the Cards if he gets a new contract so the malcontent label could be dropping off of him giving other teams less leverage in negotiations. I'm not going to say that it'll take a 1st and Coles to get him but a 1st won't be enough, especially given the competition that could be out there to get him: The Giants are just over a year removed from their SB win and Boldin could get them their second in three years. Philly is only a true #1 WR away from being a dangerous SB contender. Tennessee could definitely use at least one better receiving option that isn't a TE. The Browns could be looking to swap someone for Breylon Edwards, his name has shown up in trade rumors already. Even teams that really don't need him/shouldn't bother going after him could be in the mix: The Bungles need someone to replace Housh and OchoCinco since neither of them will be back next year. The Raiders are typically good for at least two bat-shit insane signings/trades a year. All that plus the recent trade of Roy Williams to Dallas is going to set the compensation bar higher than it should for the Cardinals if they even want to get rid of Boldin and, frankly, I'm not entirely convinced that they need to.
First off, I don't think AZ would be interested in Coles. He's going to get 6 mil this year, and they have Fitz and Breaston. They are a cheap franchise and still need to sign Warner. They just put the F tag on Dansby. They would want a GOOD defensive player ( or maybe Leon or T Jones) AND our first round pick. Then we would have to pay Boldin so much, it would likely make him the highest paid WR in the NFL. Given this team's needs, I just don't see Boldin as even a remote possibility.
We can tell him that we want him on the team so bad, we'll cut Eric Smith (little would Boldin know, we were gonna do that anyway)
Or we could keep him for another week and let Boldin beat the hell out of him during the day, keep waking him up in the middle of the night with a mix of threatening phone calls, hang-ups, and asinine questions about bar soap, and ruin his mornings by rearranging his furniture so he's constantly stubbing his toe and falling over his ottoman before he finally wakes up and leaves to work out. Seriously though, I remember reading that Boldin sent Smith a text saying that he told Smith not to change the way he plays after being released from the hospital.
That explains Smith's continued horrendous play throughout the season. If Smith is still a Jet next season, I will kill several small animals.
$ has a way of healing wounds. This guy is a premier WR. Something everyone on this board always says we have been lacking. This guy is a no brainer. There are no good arguments for not going after him. NONE!
-his price tag -his injury history -he's shown he's a malcontent This is a pipe dream....Rexanbaum (sounds better than Tangini) is not going to forfeit our draft in favour of Boldin....it won't happen.
You hit the nail on he head, MBGreen. Boldin is not worth the two or three draft prospects we would have to give up in order to get him here.
If we have that kind of cap room nothing is a pipe dream. I am not looking to give away the draft for him but i would much rather have a proven player then a player who may turn out to be good, one day. He is not a malcontent. He is a player who has been asking for a new contract and has been promised one by the Cards, only to be ignored. He does his job on the field. He wants to be paid and deserves to be. Even if we had to give up a 1st i'd do it. He's young and he's a proven commodity. Thats something you don't get with a college draft pick.
You're not wrong, but the problem is that it's going to take more than just a 1st to get him. Once you start looking at giving up two or three draft picks it kind of becomes a wash. We have too many holes to fill at this point to be giving up the amount of picks it's going to take to get Boldin just to get one player.
Arizona is not going to pay $7 million for a 3rd string receiver, and that's exactly what he'd be on that team. If Warner comes back, and it seems he is, then I'd be very shocked if Boldin doesn't follow.
